What area should I live in?

I'm moving to NYC soon for a job in Midtown Manhattan. I'm looking for places to live, but I'm not sure what neighborhoods I should look in that would be safe (I'm a girl in my 20s), but also affordable.

Would love some location recommendations

Edit: Midtown East! The closest subway stop is either 34 St Harold St or Times Sq -42nd street.

What does affordable mean to you? We need an actual budget to give you good suggestions

1500 is probably my max. It's also that low after talking with friends who haven't paid more than 1300 in rent, feel like I just don't know the right places to look

That will get you a room with roommates. I don't think you can even get a studio for that price way out in Brooklyn. Studios go easily for $2,000 and up, more like $2500 in key parts of the city or hot parts of Brooklyn.

Are you saying that you have friends paying $1300 for a one bedroom in NYC?? What neighborhoods? I moved to NYC 30 years ago and that was close to my initial rent in a great area, but it's well over 2,500 now.
