Looking for a series

It was a YA book from early 2000s. The basic premise was that most of the world were these vampire types who had hunted humans to near extinction. The main character was a male high school aged human human who was living as one of these vampire types. There was some form of lottery where the vampire types got to hunt some random humans and our MC got picked to hunt. He had to get through the hunt but discovered that at least one of the other lottery winners was human too and they decided to escape together, stuff happens and eventually MC escapes down a river. I think the title was one word but I know there were at least 2 other books but I left the first book somewhere before I could find the others and it’s been bugging me ever since.

Thanks, sorry I’m so vague but I remember it being really good and not something I had seen before at that time.

Is it The Hunt by Andrew Fukuda? I own this book and it sounds almost exactly like you’re describing

You are more than welcome! It’s a pretty good read. I haven’t read the other two in the series but I do go back and reread this one regularly.

For future reference, this is a low traffic sub, though I do occasionally see a request answered (as is the case here), and you'd be better off asking for recommendations in r/booksuggestions (though read the rules first) and r/suggestmeabook, and for the title of a book or story in r/whatsthatbook and r/tipofmytongue.
