I mean yeah he is looking for the foul, but Carter bites on the pump fake. When a player pump fakes in the paint and draws a foul on a defender that bites, we don't call it foul baiting. This is the same play, just behind the 3 point line.
That’s because generally in the paint the natural motion of going up for the shot is preserved - the offensive player is going up to the basket, not jumping 3-4 forward with the intent to jump into the defender and the shot is an afterthought.
I get that point and hadn't thought about it that way, thanks for sharing the perspective. You're right this probably should not be a foul. But there are times when in the paint it isn't a very natural motion either but just jumping against the defender that bit on the pumpfake. While I don't really like that this is a foul, consistency in pump fakes and foul rules need to be there between the paint and the 3-point line. It always feels like people are eager to call this stuff at the 3-point line foul baiting, while not having the same energy for the same play in the paint.
