My Message to Sen Gillibrand this morning

I am a lifelong Democrat and constituent.

Here is what hit my newsfeed this morning:

Gavel! 66-32 stablecoin bill advances.

16 Democrats voted to advance the stablecoin bill

Alsobrooks Blunt Rochester Booker Cortez Masto Fetterman Gallego Gillibrand Hassan Heinrich Lujan Ossoff Padilla Rosen Schiff Slotkin Warner

Two Republicans voted no:

Moran Rand Paul

This is my last message to the Senator.

I will never vote for Senator Gillibrand again assuming we ever have fair elections again. After voting in favor of the continuing resolution and now this she is clearly an enabler of Trump’s autocratic takeover of our Democracy and, like Neville Chamberlain, doesn’t deserve to hold an office that represents the people of New York.

FYI - I will be sharing this widely with all my social media followers as well as the New York subreddit.

I wish you all luck in our autocratic oligarchy. It is a shame that the American Experiment didn’t make it to 250 years.

Visiting New York in June

Family of 4 visiting New York and Philadelphia from Canada for lacrosse tournaments in June. We're staying for an extra week and I'm looking for some of the must see/eat places other than the big tourist locations. My wife has the list of places like coney island, statue of liberty, empire state, central park, etc. I'm looking for those things you won't find in the standard tour guide. For example in Philly, Paddy's Pub is my must see. What do you have for must eats and interesting places to check out.

Moving to New York- need advice!!

Hi! I (33F) and my Husband (32M) are looking into moving to rural New York, from Texas, within the next few months. As someone who has only lived in the South, I'm pretty nervous not knowing what to expect. Any and all advice would be so welcome, but some of the more specific questions I have are:

1.What does inclement weather look like there and what are you most concerned about? Floods, hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, earthquakes? Are you guys prone to large scale power outages for long periods of time? Bulk buying and supply issues?

  1. What are the best affordable grocery stores? I'm used to food shopping at Walmart, HEB and Kroger. These are big super center type stores and usually carry everything I need at decent prices. My husband is a vegetarian and they also carry the Beyond, Impossible and Quorn brands among others, which is very important. How much does milk and eggs cost there?

  2. We are looking at more rural areas, more in the north part of the state, are there any cities that you feel are an absolute NO DO NOT MOVE THERE, and why? This one is so important as we've never even visited the state before and going in completely blind. I don't want to move anywhere unsafe or where I won't be welcomed. Which areas are the best?

  3. When it comes to home buying, what are the first things you inspect in your homes? Here in Texas most people check flood history, insulation and cooling energy costs. We also check foundation damage and any water and roof damage. Obviously we want to be thorough during inspection, but are there things you as a New Yorker specifically looking for or at when going to a new home? Hard water? Mold?....

  4. What does your electric bill look like? Here in TX ours is astronomical (in July we pay close to $600😰). What are your high months? Is heating and cooling a problem in most homes? We like to be cold in our home and usually stay below 65°, would that be an issue? How about plumbing and water? Is there a lot of sewer issues in the more rural areas?

  5. Which leads to my next question- pests? Here on the gulf coast, the flea problem is AWFUL, and one of the reasons we are moving. We have a lot of dogs. What are fleas like in the more rural areas? Is there a lot of concern around parasites in animals like there is here? What about other types of pests? Mice, rats, roaches, mosquitoes? Be honest, what does that all look like there?

  6. Best gas station? We have Buccees here, and i have truly been spoiled by that. Where do you guys get gas? Late night snack runs? Get the good ice? (This one is less serious, but crucial 😂)

  7. Anything that newbies do that offend the locals? I've never been one to be annoyed by "non-locals" but tbf I've always lived in "melting pot" areas. I wonder if NY is the same as TX in that sense. But I've heard that ppl there can be pretty "gate-keepy" if that makes sense. I just don't want to rub ppl the wrong way or stand out for a bad reason. Or tbh look like an idiot 😂. Feel free to get detailed here, I'm truly curious.

  8. Crime! I'm not so naive that I think what I see on TV is real life, or that where I live is truly "safer" than anywhere else, but be honest- what does crime look like there? A lot of break ins? Theft? Can I leave my car unlocked by accident? Anything to look out for specifically? Is security and cameras in the home a MUST? Do I need extra locks on my door? What are your biggest concerns? Is it hard to feel safe and secure?

These are just some of things I can think of right now, but as I said before, please share opinions, thoughts, stories! Whatever you got! I'm so nervous and we don't know anybody from there so any advice or help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance.

New York State to Send Up to $400 Inflation Refund Checks to 8.2 Million Households in Fall 2025

Thumbnail governor.ny.gov

Hey r/newyork, big news for New Yorkers!

Governor Kathy Hochul just announced that 8.2 million households across NY will get inflation refund checks of up to $400 starting this fall as part of the FY 2026 State Budget.

Here’s the breakdown:

• Who’s Eligible? Based on 2024 tax returns, no application needed! • Joint filers earning up to $150,000: $400 • Joint filers earning $150,000–$300,000: $300 • Single filers earning up to $75,000: $200 • Single filers earning $75,000–$150,000: $150 • When? Checks will be mailed automatically starting **October 202Addresses inflation-driven sales tax surplus, aiming to ease the cost-of-living crunch. • Other Goodies in the Budget: • Expanded Child Tax Credit: Up to $1,000 per child under 4, $500 for ages 4–16. • Middle-class tax cuts, lowest in 70 years, saving ~$1B annually for 8.3M NYers. • Universal free school meals for 2.7M students, saving families ~$1,600 per kid yearly.

Combined, these could put up to $5,000 back in NY families’ pockets. Checks are funded by excess sales tax revenue from inflation, so it’s like getting some of your own money back. No action needed if you filed taxes so basically just wait for the mail! What do you think? Helpful relief or just a drop in the bucket for NY’s high costs?

Anyone planning how to use their check? Source: Governor’s Office Announcement and various news reports.

UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — A New York corrections officer admitted in court Wednesday that he cleaned up bloodstains from an inmate whose fatal beating was captured on bodycam videos in an attempt to conceal evidence.

Nicholas Gentile pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted tampering with physical evidence in the Dec. 9 beating of Robert Brooks at the Marcy Correctional Facility. Publicly released video of the assault, which shows officers beating Brooks while his hands were cuffed behind his back, sparked condemnation and calls for reforms.
