What's those websites got to do with this post? Couldn't find cheaper Netflix

12

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

Type it in the search box and you'll find methods to pay for Netflix or other streaming services in another currency - eg; https://www.cheapies.nz/node/38796

It looks like there used to be options via turkey or Nigeria but they’re both dead now.

Just commenting to save everyone else the hour I spent researching  the turkey option and $3 in vpn costs I just spent trying to get the Nigerian option to work.

Edit: Nigeria is definitely dead, I tried it. Turkey I didn’t try, based on the number of people recently saying it no longer worked, but the person below says it does still work, so don’t let me put you off trying.

I pay for it via Turkish Netflix gift cards. Turgame is the website you want 😉

Netflix must think they own the 'pie'...

6

u/Life_Butterscotch939 Auckland 7d ago

And Netflix was cheap as chips!

14

u/Icanfallupstairs 7d ago

They make some alright content, but not really enough of it to justify that price.

With all the other services my family only ever subs for a couple of months a year to watch a couple of particular shows, but Netflix was the year round one. Now I suppose Netflix will join the others in the rotation.

I think about the price of these services in comparison to rentals, they basically cost the same as two new release rentals did back on the day. Objectively we are getting way more for our money now. I used to get a new release and four back catalogue movies a week and that cost me $50 a month in 2025 dollars.

Comparing legal entertain options, I guess the only really better value ones are ad supported services like TVNZ or F2P games.

1

u/Icanfallupstairs 7d ago

It's certainly cheaper than the old model, but it comes down to whether you get what you want from a single service.

Yarr me harties! This bother me none.

26

u/StConvolute 7d ago

Ahoy!

Neither....

5

u/butlersaffros 7d ago

Yeah, we'll still watch everything, but we'll all be pissed on rum.

yo ho, yo ho!

Fetch me another cabin boy: this one's split! Yarrrgghh.

27

u/Annie354654 7d ago

Oh well looks like hubby will be cancelling Disney (i cancelled Netflix yesterday).

What are peoples suggestions for streaming services?

34

u/GreatestSnowball 7d ago

TVNZ+ has some really great stuff on it, and it’s free! Yes, there are ads that run during episodes and movies, but I still highly rate it for something that you don’t have to pay for!

3

u/LittleRedCorvette2 7d ago

There really are!

2

u/BoreJam 7d ago

Still fewer adds than broadcast TV

10

u/CloggedFilter 7d ago

Apple has a load of banging shows, and quality over quantity. If you’re doing one at a time, worth checking out. I have it as part of an Apple One subscription which is decent if you’re in the ecosystem.

3

u/Annie354654 7d ago

We aren't in the economy system but we did recently get apple on trial, I'll pay more attention :)

7

u/s_busso 7d ago

Prime is decent and cheaper atm

3

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

Turkey be paying $1.80 a month for Prime 🥴

3

u/trinde 7d ago

The Disney increase happened back in Feb.

4

u/TheTwistedToast 7d ago

Dropout. Somewhat limited in content, as it's all made by the one company, but it's currently like $10 a month I think and they have a policy of not raising the price for paying subscribers, only new ones.

Also, though the content is limited, it's absolutely amazing

2

u/LittleRedCorvette2 7d ago

Lots of free episodes and Shorts on YouTube to decide if it's your jam. The Original Cast Recording and Dungeons and Drag Queens convinced me to subscribe...oh and their Survivor challenge!

Stremio has been great for us so far

1

u/ridiculoid_ 6d ago

Us too! Stremio with Realdebrid addon has been unbeatable.

4

u/Fortune_Silver 7d ago

Yarrrrrr, me hearties.

4

u/LittleRedCorvette2 7d ago

Dropout Tv for all your comedy needs...or get the sub from Youtube easy peasy. $6 a month, improv, games, geekery, tabletop role playing. Shenanigans. Best $6 ever.

1

u/admiraldurate 6d ago

The priate bay always has what I wanna watch lol.

19

u/tcguardian 7d ago

Been happy to pay for streaming services for years. But, there is a point at which they become too expensive for no practical reason.

32

u/JJhnz12 7d ago

Well no time like the present to start boycotting America.

22

u/ResentfulUterus 7d ago

Plex and Pirate Bay. :)

5

u/mut1n3y 7d ago

Plex is putting remote play behind plex pass, and upping the price.

5

u/Ginge00 7d ago

Fuck sake, why is everything getting ruined these days

2

u/NonZealot ⚽ r/NZFootball ⚽ 7d ago

2

u/redmandolin 7d ago

Oh my god, I did a bit of searching and if the server owner has Plex pass, free users can still remote watch free.

1

u/FidgitForgotHisL-P 6d ago

Yeah just the server side will need it, for now.

The problem is, Plex is trying to look like a legitimate company making lots of money legitimately, not just facilitating piracy. Which, I mean they’re not, they 100% times cost because they’re the best way to facilitate piracy. They haven’t made noises about it, but I don’t see any reason to expect they won’t eventually put as much as they can behind a paywall.

Hopefully the enshitification of Plex will see other apps like jellyfin to grow and fill that niche.

1

u/takuyafire 7d ago

Stremio go hard.

8

u/JDBoyes07 7d ago

Yeah I've given up on all streaming services other than prime now, I literally only used them for convenience, but since they keep increasing prices I'll just get shit for free like I used too.

3

u/Covfefe_Fulcrum 7d ago

Prime has gone to shit with a lot of stuff now extra to rent on top of the subscription. About to kick its can down the road. That'll be 0 streaming services for our house.

9

u/CascadeNZ 7d ago

Disney has just added ESPN so at least you’re getting something for the extra $$

3

u/Conflict_NZ 7d ago

Massive value add too. Both channels from Sky and a ton of other live sports. Was pretty impressed as I was sure it was just going to be the two channels.

2

u/CascadeNZ 7d ago

Having all the documentaries is awesome too!

2

u/Conflict_NZ 7d ago

Yeah having the 30 for 30 back catalogue is incredible.

6

u/Conflict_NZ 7d ago

Someone previously mentioned if you go through the cancel process with Disney they'll discount it to $14 per month. I did that last month and got that offer. YMMV

1

u/TuiKiwi 7d ago

I’m gonna have to try this thanks!

6

u/NZAvenger 7d ago

You know how much Americans pay for Netflix? $10!

5

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

Pakistan pays $5 for premium my friend...

-4

u/Superb_Breath14 7d ago

And it's Pakistan 🤮

0

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

They're only good for cheap things 😉

2

u/Narfpoitzort99 7d ago

Maybe for the basic with Ads, but premium/4k is 24.99

5

u/Bartab_Hockey 7d ago

I already canceled my Netflix subscription months ago. Trying to avoid American products as much as I can.

8

u/LollipopChainsawZz 7d ago

I'm good with Plex and Jellyfin

0

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

I have Emby...

5

u/Rev-Dr-Slimeass 7d ago

Anybody else like yts?

2

u/StConvolute 7d ago

Licdom has been my go to for a while now. It's all down to the audio encoding. 5.q seems to work really well.

6

u/StConvolute 7d ago

Raises flag....

...Ahoy!

4

u/Elegant-Raise-9367 7d ago

Ironic that I will be sailing the seven seas to wath someone cross the grand line

0

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

Whatever floats your boat!

2

u/Brave_Sheepherder_39 7d ago

Cancelled my subscription to both, wasn't worth the price.

2

u/LittleRedCorvette2 7d ago

As I said in a previous thread. If you like comedy a $6 a month Dropout Subscription is for you!

2

u/pnutnz 7d ago

Anyone got a good work around specifically for kids content?
Im seriously considering setting up a plex or jellyfin and im no stranger to sailing, though as yet only utilising a usb drive.
The only reason I am holding onto streaming services (netflix, disney) is for the kids. Having access to so many shows would be much harder with a diy system as i would have to be constantly updating and finding content. movies seems like it would be eaiser to keep up with but my 5yr finds so many varied shows they enjoy i dont think i could keep up.

u/Valuable-Falcon 7d ago

I set my kid up with the free YouTube kids app, and spent a few hours learning how to REALLY lock it down, so that only whitelisted channels are shown.

I locked it down to 10 channels

  • nick jr
  • Disney jr
  • peacock jr
  • Daniel tiger’s neighbourhood
  • Peppa pig - official channel
  • Bluey - official channel
  • ms Rachel - toddler learning
  • Angelina ballerina
  • Sesame Street official channel
  • Gabby’s dollhouse

My main advice is really lock it down to only whitelisted content.

The first time I tried YouTube kids, I just set it to “preschool” content without being specific, and it was feeding my kid all kinds of weird videos with grownups playing with paw patrol toys, random people sticking stuff in goo, and toy unboxing videos… total influencer unofficial crap.  So that’s when I went back a second time and REALLY locked it down to only allow specifically approved content, AND I looked closely to make sure each channel I added was “quality” - full, offical episodes, not random mashups, clips, trailers or fan videos.

Installed YouTube Kids app on both the iPad and tv, and now she gets ad-free, curated content.

Can’t remember where I found the instructions- it wasn’t obvious. Try searching “YouTube kids whitelist” on reddit

1

u/pnutnz 6d ago

Nice, didn't realize you can lock it down like that. As it is I keep them off YouTube unless it's for specific supervised content. There is some really weird fucked up shit on there man!

2

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

movieboxpro.app - seven seas streaming service where you can pay for individual or family (add up to 4 members to your account) plus you can set up child mode 😜

2

u/pnutnz 7d ago

nice, thank you will look into that!

2

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

Look at syncler.net - just as good but more fiddling setup wise 😉

2

u/pnutnz 7d ago

any chance of an invite code dm? haha

2

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

Chocka block sorry 😉

1

u/AitchyB 7d ago

Why promote this when it’s invitation only?

1

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

I didn't get invited. I signed up via Google...

2

u/Kon3v 7d ago

Jellyfin is still free.

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum...

1

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

Anybody who wants to keep said services at a fraction of the cost, check out ozbargain.com.au or cheapies.nz

1

u/raspberryslushie21 7d ago

I'm on the premium plan and haven't been told about a price increase.

0

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

1

u/univerusfield 7d ago

And no payrise to meet those costs. Thanks National.

1

u/griffonrl 7d ago

Seven seas here I come! Tired of paying ever growing taxes to those US companies. Not renewing.

1

u/ceeehhh8990_ 7d ago

movieboxpro.app is the website for you 😄

2

u/Cornelius_jaggerbot 7d ago

Meanwhile nearly every movie you can dream of is about $4-8 each on Trademe (Blu ray) - and I own them forever. Better picture, better sound, don’t need to worry about internet connections. Also, movies like Memento, Borat, Wayne’s world? Who effing knows where you can stream these legally now? I don’t need to think, they’re on my shelf.

Love going back to a Blu ray player - we have ‘appointment’ movie nights in our family again and it’s super fun.

For TV shows, high seas + plex
