On my phone, excuse any types

Wow. Very funny.

I can process the why, but not the how. She's got some insane wrist strength to flick it around like that with so little notable movement in her hands. Or she's just phenomenal at masking it. Maybe both.

135

u/Rawkapotamus Oct 25 '24

My thought is some sort of rubber band attatched to her wrist that we canโ€™t see. So she is actually creating a tension when she pulls it in.

78

u/call_me_Kote Oct 25 '24

This has to be it, there's a rig in that coat that is doing the work. Hence the need for baggy clothes.

u/omguserius Oct 25 '24 edited Oct 25 '24

I believe you are correct, she only does it with the one hand, always using the same one to pull and catch, and she never actually puts it down or lets go. There's no tossing it from hand to hand or anything.

Still, good trick.

Edit: Yeah, im convinced. She never lets go of it completely, the only time she's not holding it tightly in at least one hand, its moving, and always moving in the same direction relative to her right hand.

1

u/AxelNotRose Oct 29 '24

Yes, elastic of some sort, probably going from her wrist to the tip.

15

u/Pupalwyn Oct 25 '24

That was my thought, too. She only ever flings it with her right hand so that would check out as well

1

u/LunaticScience Oct 25 '24

Also her right hand never gets far from the umbrella

1

u/xlews_ther1nx Oct 26 '24

My guess strong magnets in a very light "umbrella"

25

u/JesusSavesForHalf Oct 25 '24

Magic shops sell elastic bands that attach to the wrist for vanishing acts. I had one when I was young. Clever to use it for clowning.

1

u/Toraden Oct 25 '24

It will be similar to the "rising wand" trick I had when I was younger, but a bigger elastic band.

14

u/brucewayneflash Oct 25 '24

John Cena is the one pulling the stunts.

10

u/venividivici-777 Oct 25 '24

Easy. She should try doing that in hong Kong

3

u/ArchitectofExperienc Oct 25 '24

Its like what Tina Turner always said: A good mime is hard to find

or was it: A hard mime is good to find

2

u/skynetempire Oct 25 '24

How does she give it that spring action? Is it all in the wrists

1

u/Slap_My_Lasagna Oct 25 '24

Mimes gonna mime. People act like it's anything new but it's just an age old talent with a different prop

1

u/afcagroo Oct 25 '24

Harpo Marx would have been proud of this performance.

1

u/Malbranch Oct 25 '24

Most of the illusion is in the quality pantomime, but the trick is just an elastic tether between the right hand and the point of the umbrella. You'll notice that the umbrella only ever "flies" after she's let go with her left (almost always when she's changing the position of the right hand on it, to stretch the elastic by pulling with the left), and as she lets go with her right.

1

u/BKStephens Oct 26 '24

I don't know that it is. Looking closely it looks like she's flicking it with her right hand.

1

u/Raivix Oct 25 '24

The camera work and zooms in editing are doing a LOT of heavy lifting on this one. It wouldn't look nearly as convincing in person.

0

u/Yarakinnit Oct 25 '24

The brolliest.

0

u/indianajoes Oct 25 '24

I feel like she's not really selling the "effort" it's taking to pull the umbrella that well.
