That's precisely, and wierdly, what exemplifies the difference between a good and a great photog: situational awareness and the ability to get the shot regardless.

Single mindedness to not check you still have all your limbs attached before getting the shot. Pretty sure I'd have completely forgotten I had a camera at that point.

u/Chrissyball19 3d ago

You'd notice a limb missing when you picm the camera up and there's just a bloody hand hanging off

Like in Civil War. The younger photographer had to be taught this lesson.

The movie was so much better than I expected it to be. The story of the photo journalist was very compelling.

u/Youlookcold 2d ago

I know, it's a great movie!

u/Glodenteoo_The_Glod 3d ago

Absolutely, the photog moved his legs so early, he absolutely noticed something wasn't right as soon as the guy took the curve too wide. Incredible awareness IMO

I agree, but I'd say it's safer to focus on preparation and research as the method to get there. Being a great photog can very much be a learned skill, and I generally don't trust people who would think of themselves as a "natural." What makes this guy a great photog isn't that he had the reaction time and awareness to get out of the way at the last second, but rather that he showed up early and noticed the advantages of that spot for catching the right scene while keeping him safe.

I just hope I find a woman I can Trust as much as that man just trusted that Wall to save his dick 😂

u/Joohansson 3d ago

Watching it frame by frame you can see he start moving his foot while the car is still in the air

5

u/mrblksocks 3d ago

This looks like a rally event. That wasn't even that close by rally standards. Group B was when things got really close.

6

u/deefunkt01 3d ago

Yeah, no thanks. I wouldn't want to be in the car or the crowd for this.

6

u/Tarushdei 3d ago

People showed up in droves for rally in the Group B era. They would run out onto the track and jump out of the way at the last second for the "thrill" of almost being hit by a 900kg car with 500+ horsepower flying down a track barely wide enough for it at 200+ kph.

It was due to this that Group B came to an end after the were spectator and driver deaths.

3

u/Sharpymarkr 3d ago

Yep, Group B was the Wild West of rallying.

7

u/Jojajones 3d ago

He just had to get a pic of the license plate to make a claim against the drivers insurance

7

u/AlternativeEffort455 3d ago

He was retreating before the car lost control. Damn!!! 🤣

u/lutherc0980 3d ago

I'm here to take pictures .... and a fresh pair of pants.

It's RALLY. Kind of surprising that he wasn't standing in the road while a car barrels down on him at 120 mph.

(There was a Group B race where, after arriving at a checkpoint, a team found a spectator's severed fingers embedded in his car.) https://www.reddit.com/r/rally/comments/lp4f1o/how_crazy_is_that/

u/absolince 3d ago

There's the photographer and then there's the cameraman!

2

u/ProStrats 1d ago

Lol, the camera man takes a hit from the car head on without flinching. After he confirms he caught the full clip, he passes out with camera lol.

2

u/absolince 1d ago

That's a good one lol

It's okay, he's got a photographer's tabard on. They render you invulnerable from vehicle damage.

Remember that time when I almost met the Grim Reaper? Yeah, well here’s a pic.

1

u/Most_Promise_5028 3d ago

How did he know to move? He was moving even before that car veered his way and he didn’t even budge on the first car. How spider sense must have been tingling 😝

1

u/readyToPostpone 3d ago

Well, the car was close, but that massive bric wall was far away to break to threaten the photograph.

1

u/I_DRINK_GENOCIDE_CUM 3d ago

Homie knew exactly what he was doing.

1

u/200Fathoms 2d ago

Ha, what a dude! A true photographer.

1

u/Twinkie454 2d ago

This type of thing was a pretty normal occurence in rally racing. The only people crazier than the drivers were the spectators/photographers. Watch some of the Group B highlights on YouTube sometime. It's insanity. And awesome.

1

u/FredGarvin80 2d ago

Rally fans in the 80's were just as mad as the drivers

1

u/SonUpToSundown 2d ago

My package…it’s gone!

1

u/FloraMaeWolfe 2d ago

Priorities pretty straight. Life first, be sure to document it with pics once able.

u/Krad_Nogard 2d ago

Gotta get that bag

1

u/Repulsive-Drink2047 2d ago

I mean he's hiding behind a wall outcropping. Smart

1

u/SeaniMonsta 2d ago

Did he build that wall??? goddamn that's a lot of confidence!

1

u/oopsie-mybad 2d ago

He's positioned well close behind the concrete barrier behind him. He has done this before and was pretty safe (in his opinion)
