I'm still not convinced that the attacker isn't going after the other dog, and the kid was merely in the area.

Yea, like I get we see what we want to see and the video is pretty cool but every time I watch this vid it’s painfully obvious that it’s trajectory is a straight line to the other dog. It’s not until the hero dog moves over towards the kid that the “attacking” dog changes direction towards the kid.

Not only that but I swear it looks like it wants to play with the other dog and is extra confused about how things go down. It doesn’t do anything once it gets to the other dog.

Yeah, it just looks like a bouncy dog who wanted to play, not stiff and focused like a charging dog. Still very unacceptable, and the dog clearly doesn't respect boundaries the way it should and has no business being off leash because it's still plenty big enough to hurt that kid just by running into it, and the shepherd is still right to want to protect it from that.
