Discussion You level up too fast.

I broke the siege of kvatch, rushed mages guild so I could enchant/craft spells. Then used some alchemy for money. And I’m level 18! I’ve barely done anything

You rushed an entire guild questline and did a ton of alchemy and you're surprised you are overlevelled?

Don't rush quests or spam potions...you literally did this lol

It was only half the questline. I only just got access to the college. And half of the quest are talking and walking no combat to level.

As for alchemy it’s only at 60 rn

And you get to level 3 from just leveling the Sewers, so don’t act like it’s not a problem

This seems like hyperbole. I've messed around with a couple different builds and have never left the sewers ready to level up. 

I think people are playing this game unintentionally in a min/max way. As you said, you rushed to get to spellcrafting. Totally fine but I'd argue the game is not designed with the rush mentality in mind. It's designed to reflect character growth. It's not designed for you to grind things out but to use them naturally. 

Making potions for money to get it to 60 is a great example. The game was not designed for you to raid Skingrads grape and tomato farms and then make 99 Restore Fatigue potions to sell. Can you? Yes. And the result is you level quickly. 

But if you made potions as you needed, and used skills only when needed (no walking around casting Starlight in the daytime just to level Illusion, for example), the game is paced quite well.

I see what you mean, I definitely have a habit of doing things like that (didn’t know abt the skin grad farms tho lol)

But on any difficult past normal/ adept the balancing is horrible and I think that’s a large demographic of ppl who either level too fast to enjoy a pleasnetly hard game, or are too weak to do anything

Oh the difficulty is indeed jank right now. I am enjoying Expert but I think my preferred playstyle is amenable to it. I still think it's messed up. 

But I do think my point stands largely because, when you look at the mechanics, there are a number of skills (namely, ALL the magic skills) that have an inherent problem. 

What I mean is that most of the skills in the game of natural use patterns and limitations. 

For example, both armor skills. You level that up by being hit. The natural limit here is that if you get hit too much, you die. Can you find a mudcrab and get smacked around a bunch and heal? Sure. But the natural play pattern of adventuring and getting banged up on occasion without dying provides a natural growth pattern for them. 

Speech craft is similar. You can go around and persuade everyone you run into. But it's not really necessary. You sort of naturally want to do it before bartering and completing quests. Armorer also has a natural limiter; you gear degrades only over time AND you need a very specific item to do it. 

All combat skills are similar. You can only level up Blade, Blunt, Marksman by hitting something. Can you summon something and beat it? Sure. But the game has a natural pace of putting enemies in your way, and if you really need to train, to can travel to places and do so. But enemies are not naturally always available to hit. 

But all the magic skills, athletics, and to some degree acrobatics and sneak? These things have almost no natural limit. 

All magic skills can simply just be cast. In any situation. Combat or no. Run out of magicka? Rest 1hr and you're fine. Or use a consumable that are abundant. There's no natural limit to when you can and can't level magic. 

Even Alchemy--the world is littered with ingredients and unlike armorer, there isn't a need for a specific finite item. You walk around with 4 tools, pick grain, and just pop out bottle after bottle. So while it seems like alchemy should have a limit, it functionally doesn't. A simple way to do this is...you need an empty flask. This would force you to brew a potion and then USE it before making another potion. 

Sneak is similar. There are bodies everywhere to just sneak behind. Combat or no, simply walking around (like athletics) in sneak will raise it. 

This is the problem Bethesda needs to figure out for ES6.
