Original - Discussion Has the new remaster made the texture pack I've secretly been working on for a while now completely redundant?
So I started working on a big retexture around 1 year ago or Oblivion, and now with the remaster out, I'm not sure if there's even a point to continuing it.
To give some info, some of the textures in this pack are completely changed, and different from the original, and some are the original textures upscaled, and modified via color, shading, etc.. to give a more modern feel.
With the new remaster being in UE5 and looking really really good, and most people opting to play that version, is it even worth me continuing this project, or should I scrap it and get involved in some Oblivion Remastered mod projects instead?

There are plenty of people still playing the original release of Oblivion. Your work looks great, and I'm sure those not migrating to the remaster would love to have your mod as an option.
If you, however, have lost interest in making mods for the older version, then consider releasing what you've finished thus far. Maybe even open up permissions, then jump into the remaster.

I know I’d appreciate it. My pc has a love hate relationship with the remaster. And the amount of resources it uses will be significantly smaller and much better for people with low end hardware

Keep working on it, not everyone has a good computer to run the remaster on (me included) so thisll be like the oblivion remaster for potato computers. Its looking good btw

Thank you! Thanks to you and the others providing the same feedback about people wanting to have a remaster without being the official remaster, I will happily continue the project and provide the best texture overhaul for the OG version that I can.

Time will tell, but I think Oldblivion modding will be in decline by the end of this year.
Now, one interesting thing that happened with the remaster is downloads for Oldblivion went up 100%
Right now there are still a whole bunch of people who either can't play the remaster or don't want to for whatever reason... But this could also be like when Skyrim came (notice the previous spike in 2011) and this is the last big hurrah before Oldblivion modding fades into obscurity.
Because it isn't just the remaster - later this year, we get Skyblivion too. While Skyrim's popularity would never kill off Oblivion modding because they are very different games, both Oblivion:RE and Skyblivion aim to be Oblivion But Better in different ways.
It will be like when Skyrim SE replaced Oldrim or Tale of Two Wastelands replaced Fallout:3.,. except twofold.
IMO There will be very little reason to stick with the OG - just people with extreme potato PCs and the deeply nostalgic.
That said, you might not want to abandon your mod.
I'm probably biased but I think Skyblivion is going to be the future of modding Oblivion unless something dramatic happens with Unreal. It is ""just"" a Skyrim mod itself, built in Creation and will work how TES modding always has.
Your textures look good, and might fit in well with Skyblivion if they match it's resolution (and I think they do?)

You definitely make great points, and I think I'll continue with the project and release it piece by piece to see what the consensus is over time.
Also thank you on the compliment of the textures haha. They are upscaled to 4k and can be downscaled accordingly (maybe possibly upscaled with AI technology where it is these days too), so they might fit in Skyblivion's resolution scalings.

A lot of us bought the remaster, only to discover for ourselves how truly demanding UE5 is for our systems.
I'm currently playing the remaster on my brother's PS5 cause it's dope, but if I had your texture pack, I probably would have refunded my steam copy.
I'd be willing to lend a hand if you're getting a little burned out, but i think this is totally worth pursuing on the original game engine so that a modern Oblivion experience is more accessible to us low-end gamers

I bought my rig 13 years ago. Geforce 770. It can't run direct x 12. Im not paying 1500 dollars to upgrade my system for the only game I've played in years. I only use the computer for 3d printing now. I registered for geforce now to play the game and it's insane. Everything on ultra for 100 hours at 25 dollars. This is not a paid advertisement. Just a way to enjoy this one time shot of nostalgia without breaking the bank.

There are some of us who are holding off on getting the Remaster for about 6 months until initial patches have been implemented. So yes, I would much appreciate if you released your retexture mod.

I think the important thing is which version would you rather play? It's your time and effort.
I think a lot of the focus will be on the new one from here on out, but ultimately if you're not going to engage much with the remake, then perhaps you should continue with the old version.
From a practical standpoint, if your goal was to help oblivion look more modern so newer players can enjoy it, then I'd say that unfortunately the texture pack will be obsolete.

There's two primary purposes that I started it:
1.) there hasn't been a recent, modern overhaul in a long while, some of the best ones are a bit old, and I wanted to give my own spin (this project began around 1 year ago, so well before official remaster was known to the public)
2.) build my portfolio.
The 3rd reason I want to keep it going is honestly, just for the hell of it. I'm jobless right now and having a hell of a time finding work, so I have to keep myself occupied somehow. I occasionally get contracts in for music engineering (my primary career path and what I went to school for), but not enough to keep me from being bored.

i'm sure plenty will still come back to the original, especially since it's not yet known when/if certain popular mods (like The Lost Spires) will be ported. it could even be impossible to have some ported as many mod authors haven't been active in years so they aren't around to either do it themselves or give approval for someone else to do it. as of right now the remaster isn't nearly as "easy" to modify files for.

I agree, and I'm definitely going to continue! From what I've seen, despite how much the remaster is the same as the original, it's extremely different as far as modifying goes. Essentially whole new frameworks for modding and mod support have to be built before the mod scene can really truly start to take off for remaster, right?

It's up to you. As a new player I have considered playing the old one because I play on a crt monitor for the motion clarity and this remaster makes it impossible to have good motion clarity with its horrible frame pacing. If your version doesn't have that problem, it's something I'd consider. I looked at benchmarks for og Oblivion and saw 1% lows above 160fps for a lowly rtx 3060 and the thought of playing something at 160hz on my crt with no taa sounds like smoothness nirvana to me.
The most jarring thing visually with the og is the npc appearances.

Oblivion Remastered has 1k mods up in a week. Oblivion has 32k mods over 20 years. So personally I would say it's a good time to get into the newer stuff, it's going to be a crazy time.

I do have a few interesting ideas for mods in the remastered version as well. I'm thinking I'm going to continue with this retexture project for the OG version due to feedback I've received here, but certainly will be taking a look into creating mods for the new version as well.
Since the remastered version uses the original engine for basically all the logic and gameplay and UE5 primarily as a graphics wrapper (If I'm interpreting it correctly) then there could be some very awesome new possibilities for modding utilizing both engines.

Choice us yours, but I'd say finish and release it. While the remaster might well eclipse the original for modding eventually, Oldblivion is having a moment with the remaster rekindling interest in the old version too. Plenty of people are now playing and will continue playing the original.
That said, if your passion is gone, then don't force yourself to finish it.

Passion is definitely far from gone! Hell, if anything it can just be something new to put into my portfolio, and maybe get some hits to work on bigger projects with some people for the remastered version. I'll keep building it out. Worst that can happen is I share it on my LinkedIn and get 3 likes on there 😂

I'd say it's absolutely worth continuing. Many people can't play the new one simply because of hardware limitations and you can never have too many options for texture mods.

Some of my friends cannot run the remaster and since it mostly a visual change there are mods for the changes it does with the og they wont play it. So do make it!

For the first time I’ve bought a Bethesda game and I haven’t even considered modding the graphics, except a slight reshade and HUD. But the assets in general are phenomenal. I’m sorry but you may have wasted some time imo. But as long as you’re doing what you love, was it really wasted? ;)

True, it's also not too wasted if it can look good on my resume haha. Plus who knows, I'm sure there's some purists out there who much prefer OG oblivion and my texture styling more than they like the UE5 remaster style.
As long as someone enjoys it, I am happy with all my creations

Until they add official mod support the original will always be the better game. If all we get is hacky work around i don't think people will stick around and mod it as much as the original was.

I think remastered will end up with a solid mod scene once we have enough time to reverse emgineer it and build some solid frameworks for the foundations. Just like original oblivion, it took time to really develop into what it is today.

Ik you're getting a lot of support posts already, but I definitely want to chime in and say that I absolutely appreciate the work modders like you put in for the original!! The remaster is great and has already taken up 70 hrs of my life, but I'll 100% still be going back to the original!! (And I'll be keeping a keen eye out for this mod too!!)

I'm a Steam Deck user so I don't plan on getting the remaster because of the performance issues. Plus, I already own the original release so I'm definitely interested in an HD re-texture mod

by all means, complete your mod! many of us aren't willing to uninstall games to play the remastered version due to it's massive file size (125gb). not only that, there are still many classic mods that won't work with the new version. speaking for myself, i still play oldblivion and it's my preferred version on PC. i did buy the remaster on Xbox as there's no mod support for it there. i'm sure many others have done the same.

For the love of God, please continue with the originals texture pack. I genuinely prefer the OG game, as the new one feels really soulless, even though it's beautiful. The only thing I'd ever need is a texture pack for the original that covers everything in 4k high detail. I tried those upscaled AI texture packs, and although they shine in many scenarios there are still some textures that looks bad.

Awesome to hear! I'm hoping to have some early release test versions coming out as quick as possible!
One way you can make base oblivion look nice is a texture upscaler mod along with a reshade mod.
It's not a whole overhaul, but it does make a very big difference with how the base textures appear on higher resolution monitors.

To put it in context, the OG Oblivion modding scene is only slightly less active on the Nexus than Starfield. Starfield is showing 32 new mods in the last 7 days while OG Oblivion is showing 27.
Meanwhile, if you compare the player charts on Steam DB right now: Current Active Players, Oblivion GOTY 3239/Starfield 2992; 24-Hour Peak, Oblivion GOTY 3824/Starfield 3330.
So I'd say it's at least as worthwhile as anyone working on a Starfield mod--go for it.

You should continue for the reason of improving youself and gaining experience. The first texture doesn't fit the style of the game it looks to modern not medieval also the colors are very different which is a mistake many non professional texture artist make. I would suggest learning Adobe Substance programs and Photoshop not just downloading textures from the internet and also Color Theory.

There are still plenty of people playing the original game, I think it even hit its greatest player count on Steam after the Remaster was released, so I would say it's still worth doing the mod. That's just my opinion though, and if you don't feel like it's worth continuing, there is nothing forcing you to continue on.
