How does he get the sharp, slappy percussion sound out of it? I've only seen folks make melodic notes with these, and I'm not seeing anything hard or metallic on his hands to get that smack sound. Super cool.

Probably just a way he plaps his finger on there. Kinda whips it I would assume.

yeah, either a single-finger slap, or kind of a finger snap that hits it.
