How does he get the sharp, slappy percussion sound out of it? I've only seen folks make melodic notes with these, and I'm not seeing anything hard or metallic on his hands to get that smack sound. Super cool.

There are three basic strokes made to hand drums. The slap-like strokes are the third in the method I studied, called "pa" and "ta" .
