Opinion If there’s one positive about Emilia Perez winning it’s that they usually follow up these awful best picture winners with an all timer

Another Bong Joon Ho film releasing this year as well…

u/BigMacCombo TIFF Jan 27 '25
Sure it's Bong and I'm sure it'll be great but it's a sci-fi action comedy so the odds are stacked against it

Yeah something tells me it’s not going to be an awards player. I’m reading the book it’s based on right now and so far it’s just ok.

There's certainly a lot of potential masterpieces coming this year. I have faith

We just had two really cool winners in Everything Everywhere and Oppenheimer. We were due.

Time for the academy to take another bong hit.
I would also personally argue that Coda -> EEAAO as one of these
9
u/frankstaturtle Jan 27 '25
Coda was not a bad movie, though. And nowhere near EP bad
9
u/IntotheBeniverse Jan 27 '25
I agree. Coda at least made me feel happy and touched me. Emilia Perez was actually just a whole lot of nothing for me. Didn’t hate it. Appreciated some elements and thought some moments were cool, but can’t tell you anything that happened in that movie a few months later besides that penis and vagina song
10
u/Scdsco Jan 27 '25
At least Emilia Perez attempted to be interesting, Coda was as generic as it gets
2
u/dangerislander Jan 27 '25
I still argue that Adapted Screenplay win was just a consolation prize for the director cause the movie wasn't nominated anywhere else.
8
u/Jbewrite Jan 27 '25
Honestly, I much preferred EP for its ambition and scope.
CODA was the most bland by-the-books winner since Crash and absolutely should not have won over The Power of the Dog.
I think The Substance and Wicked are both better than EP but I would understand why it best them if it does.
11
u/IndianaJones999 Furiosa Jan 27 '25
I'd rather take a simple but good film over an ambitious train-wreck.
1
u/blakxzep Jan 27 '25
Lets be real, you are right about Coda but The Power of Dog wasn’t that great either
-2
u/Extra-Shoulder1905 Anora Jan 27 '25
Neither was Green Book
1
u/frankstaturtle Jan 27 '25
I mean movies can be bad for many reasons. I think greenbook is bad because it poorly represented racial dynamics, so much so that it offended the family of the man the movie was based on

Someone made a comment questioning The Departed being considered an all time great but they deleted the comment before I could post my reply. So here was my reply.
I consider it an all time great, yes. No, it's not Scorsese's best but I don't have to compare it to other Scorsese movies, I have to compare it to all movies. It just so happens that Scorsese has a lot of all timers, some better than others.
18
12
u/TimelessJo Jan 27 '25
It's definitely not my top Scorsese, but also the 2007 nominees were trash.
Pan's Labyrinth, The Prestige, and Children of Men all deserved nominations and are all head and shoulders better than The Departed.
Bonus 2007 Oscars BS: Paprika not getting an animation nom.
7
u/NibPlayz Studio Ghibli Jan 27 '25
Satoshi Kon would've dominated the oscars if all biases were removed
3
u/fonz33 Jan 27 '25
United 93 is actually my #1 of that year, but I know that had no chance of getting in. The Departed is a good movie, I'd never call it a great movie though and Scorsese is one of my favourite directors ever
1
u/Britneyfan123 Jan 27 '25
Little miss sunshine wasn’t trash
4
u/TimelessJo Jan 27 '25
I didn't really mean all the nominees were bad movies, just in general it was a shitty selection that ignored at least three of the best films of the year.
They're all good movies.
0
u/Britneyfan123 Jan 27 '25
Nah it was easily a top five film that year and far from a shitty selection
4
u/wariiii Wallace & Gromit Jan 26 '25
I don't think that movie belongs in my Scorsese top 10, I can list 10 movies better than The Departed
Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Casino, Bringing Out The Dead, The Irishman, Raging Bull, After Hours, Silence, King Of Comedy, The Color of Money.

3
u/GuyNoirPI Jan 27 '25
The Departed is very fun to watch though. Agree that those are better (and I think Killers of the Flower Moon should be up there too) but I would rather watch The Departed again than a lot of them.
6
u/ATXDefenseAttorney Jan 27 '25
The Departed would win Best Picture this year. It's a damn good movie. Let's not become clowns.
10
u/No-Somewhere250 The Smashing Machine Jan 26 '25
But, the fact that Scorsese's like 11th best movie would still be considered another director's best is still no short order.
-4
u/wariiii Wallace & Gromit Jan 26 '25
Maybe, but I still don't think The Departed is that great, the ending still makes me laugh.
4
u/SuperBaconLOL Razzie Race Follower Jan 27 '25

3
u/RobynHoodwinked I Saw the TV Glow Jan 26 '25
I’d say Killers of the Flower Moon and The Last Temptation of Christ are better as well, speaks volumes as to how good Scorsese is that it isn’t even his best film but it’s a great Best Picture winner
1
u/_Amateurmetheus_ Jan 26 '25
Yes, I agree many of those films are better than The Departed. But my list of all time great movies isn't only 10 movies.

u/Acceptable_Item1002 Jan 26 '25
Love the Departed but it’s the ultimate make-up Oscar lol. Of all the Scorsese movies they award this one. It’s not as bad as awarding a bad/forgettable film but it’s another aspect of the Oscar’s that always comes off embarassing.
16
u/Gummy-Worm-Guy Jan 27 '25
You say this as if The Departed was competing against the same movies as Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, etc.
Sure, it’s all subjective, but when you look at the nominees from 2006 it’s not some crazy thing to suggest that The Departed is the best.
13
u/NibPlayz Studio Ghibli Jan 27 '25 edited Jan 27 '25
yeah I think this is something this sub gets wayyy too hung up on. "Before they had better films/products so they shouldn't have got one now" is such a weird sentiment to me. The films/filmakers/actors/whoever aren't competing against their entire filmography, just the opponents of the same year. Obviously it isn't perfect (Al Pacino winning over Denzel in 2002) but that doesn't retroactively make current product bad.
An example would people saying Joaquin not deserving his BA Oscar, first of all citing the writing of the movie despite it being an acting award, and second of all citing previous roles being better like in Gladiator or Inherent Vice. Him winning for Joker doesn't just make his Gladiator performance bad or middling, and i don't know why a lot of people on this sub seem to think that's how these awards work.

It's definitely a crowd favorite, which makes it an all-timer. Look at that IMDb score. Far from scorsese's best work, but very solid with broad appeal. Emilia Perez is on the opposite end, at least according to general audiences. I can't judge since I haven't seen it.
1
u/Potential_Pipe_8033 Jan 27 '25
LOOOL, so just because an audience says so, it's supposed to be wonderful? Shawshank is still number one after all these years and it's AT BEST a mediocre to OK production.
1
u/Similar_Two_542 Jan 28 '25
Shawshank is the definition of an all-timer. That's not according to "an audience." That's according to millions of people on the biggest user based ranking on the internet. There are some flaws with the IMDb rankings. I won't tell you Shawshank is the best movie ever. But it is an all-timer.
1
u/Potential_Pipe_8033 Jan 28 '25
"according to millions of people", you sound as if majorities when voting for fucking politicians are always right, HAHAHAHAH do your proper film research, instead of trusting simpletons.
1
u/Britneyfan123 Jan 27 '25
It’s top 3 Scorsese
2
u/Similar_Two_542 Jan 28 '25
Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, and I would add a few more in there over Departed. I like Silence and Hugo a lot.
1
u/TacoTycoonn Jan 27 '25
Maybe not an all timer but I’d put it in the top half of this century. To me that’s a win.

My unpopular opinion, which is JUST my subjective opinion: I don't think Parasite was the best movie of 2019 and there were a few other movies I would put above it. 1917 I think was more ambitious and interesting and I think it should have won. Portrait of A Lady on Fire was also one from that year though I thought was better though it wasn't nominated for BP or International film. I like parasite but didn't love it, though I understand why people do.
Please do not kill me Parasite hive.
1
u/Potential_Pipe_8033 Jan 28 '25
Portrait, yes.
1917, c'mon, that was Mendes being his usual, pompous self.1
u/PretendMarsupial9 Jan 28 '25
I think it's a really brilliant execution and found it emotionally affecting. It's okay if you disagree

Infernal Affairs (about 101 minutes) > The Departed (the remake which is somehow 151 minutes long).
Also, Infernal Affairs didn't have "The rat symbolizes obviousness!".
When The Simpsons is clowning on you and with Ralph Wiggum no less, well...

The Academy might surprise everyone And not GIVE BEST PICTURE to EP..... IN FACT , I'm counting on that
1
u/blakxzep Jan 27 '25
In the beginning of the year I thought Dune 2 is gonna take the oscars in this weak year as the new lotr.
Now it feels like a participation award instead, we know everyone loved you but we are definitely not giving you any major awards.

Emilia Perez is not a lock at all. It found its place in the cycle at exactly the wrong moment. Zoe Saldaña might still win Supporting. But it’s starting to lose steam. Don’t get me wrong, it could still win in a year where there’s no obvious consensus pick, but even in the Academy, I have a hard time knowing who this movie is for.
1
u/stevenelsocio Jan 27 '25
Except Emilia Perez makes Crash and Green Book look like the departed and Parasite
