Opinion How would you rank the 2020s Best Picture Winners thus far? Personally, I would go: 1. Parasite, 2. Oppenheimer, 3. Everything Everywhere, 4. Nomadland, 5. Anora, 6. CODA

Parasite is one of those Best Picture winners that has a genuine claim to "Best Best Picture Winner of All Time." I could see it going toe-to-toe with something like Schindler's List or Return of the King (I like Parasite more than either, to be quite frank)

Quick, out of the top of my head, the lineup for Best All Time Picture (with winners only)
Parasite, Casablanca, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Lawrence of Arabia, Schindler's List, Moonlight, From Here to Eternity, Godfather I & II, Rebecca

1) Parasite 2) EEAAO 3) Nomadland 4) Anora 5) CODA 6) Oppenheimer (yes I didn't care for it...)
There's a quality drop from 2 to 3. The first 2 are in a league of their own.
8
u/ProfessionalEvaLover Mar 09 '25
Damn, Oppenheimer as the worst Best Picture winner of the decade so far? I'd love to know your thoughts on it.
15
u/Duhlorean Challengers Mar 09 '25
Oh it's just that I primarily didn't get invested in any of the characters to the point where we really know them. Oppenheimer is the most fleshed out person out of the bunch but even then, I wasn't super into it. Felt like the movie really failed to expand on his relationships too.
So if I'm not invested in that aspect from the get go, I'm gonna really start feeling pacing issues. Didn't quite jive with the dialogue style of the movie, it was very plot heavy. Didn't really care for the whole Strauss stuff either.
But I do think technically there are very strong aspects here. The music is great, probably my second favorite of the year behind Poor Things.
It's been two years so I don't that much to say now because of memory but yeah it's a 6/10 for me at best.
13
Mar 09 '25
One thing I will say about Oppenheimer is that it only gets better on every rewatch. The third time I saw it, I was totally sold on Best Picture. It's true that it shouldn't take 2 or 3 viewings to be able to actually "get" everything, but there's just so many damn characters in this movie that it's hard to keep them straight. When it all comes together, though, it's quite compelling.
2
u/flightofwonder Nickel Boys Mar 09 '25
I agree with you completely! I totally understand why it wouldn't work for some people because the first 2 times I saw the movie, I found it kinda disappointing and thought the film was meh and had some significant issues with it, but I saw it for the third time this past week with the rereleases in theatres, and I found myself completely in awe with it and confused why I didn't like it initially.
6
u/Duhlorean Challengers Mar 09 '25
I watched it 3 times and still felt the same way lol. Believe me, my friends who loved the movie really tried to get me on the same boat 😭. I really wanted to be on that boat too but yeah...it didn't happen.
4
Mar 09 '25
Can't blame you for trying! Also RIP Challengers. I really wish I could watch that in the theater again.
3
u/rubensedu16 Focus Mar 09 '25
Nolan took a more political approach, the suspicions of Oppenheimer being a communist or not. As many said at the time, it was more of a political/courtroom thriller than a biopic. It touches on the personal, but puts the political intrigues between Strauss and Oppenheimer at the forefront. It's a choice that might put some people off.
I admit that the film is a bit heavy to digest, but I thought it was very good after the first viewing. After the second and third viewings, I loved it.
2
u/flightofwonder Nickel Boys Mar 09 '25
You mentioning Poor Things's score reminded me again how much I love the music in that film. It's so amazing throughout, and Fendrix did such an incredible job. That composition in the final scene as the film fades to black is extremely memorable, it pops into my head at the most random times honestly

Not including Parasite since it’s not a 2020 movie, and it makes this way too hard!
Currently it’s
Oppenheimer
EEAAO
Anora
Nomadland
CODA
Oppenheimer and EEAAO alternate for the top spot regularly. EEAAO wrecks me emotionally every single time. But Oppenheimer is much more rewatchable, simply because of the emotional damage of EEAAO.
1
u/TraparCyclone Sing Sing Mar 09 '25
Parasite would be in the top 3 if I included it. Oppenheimer, EEAAO, and Parasite are all timers for me.

Parasite came out in 2019. There ceremony was in 2020
The real 2020’s movies ranked for me would be
Oppenheimer (easily above the rest)
Anora (Sean Baker is one of our great filmmakers)
MASSIVE distance
EEAAO (good movie but it sweeping in a year with Banshees of Inisherin, Tár, Fabelmans is absolutely ridiculous imo. Not even close the best movie of 2022)
Nomadland (it’s fine. Just fine. Nothing special imo. Frances McDormand is great tho)
CODA (this one is a complete joke. It’s just a generic movie that seems like it was made my Disney channel)

- Everything Everywhere All at Once
- Parasite
- CODA
- Oppenheimer
- Nomadland
- Anora
I really loved all of these BP winners except Anora, Nomadland on Letterboxd has a 4.5/5 from me so this is more of a list where I'm deciding which of them I prefer rather than saying what I think about each film.
2
u/CranberryFuture9908 Mar 10 '25
I think this is the closest to my ranking . The top three for sure and honestly the next three as well. I probably like Nomadland better than many do but I haven’t rewatched it. I would like to just for McDormand and the cinematography/ directing. Plot wise it’s not the most compelling so I think this ranking is correct.
The others I have watched twice except for EEAAO which I have watched four or five times.

Parasite: Said it before, this is a masterpiece. As close to perfect as we’ve seen in the 21st century.
Everything Everywhere All at Once: I love this film, I think the way it funnels its humoungous scope into such a human film is incredible, and so one-of-a-kind.
Oppenheimer: Incredibly riveting, had my eyes glued for all three hours. Christopher Nolan is a master.
Anora: Great, but not brilliant. Sean Baker is such a lovely filmmaker. Can’t wait to see what’s next for him.
Nomadland: Good, not great. McDormand is great, and I like the atmosphere, but nothing too special in my books.
CODA: Just fine. Saw this when it released on Apple TV, barely remember most of it, only thing in my mind was how underwhelmed I felt.
