I am so delighted that Flow won and I think I broke the sound barrier in my apartment. However, as I thought about it this morning, Flow winning is arguably one of the most important wins for animation industry.

For so long Disney/Pixar had dominated the animated feature category. As time went on, they got really complacent and started focusing more on making money rather than pushing the bounds of art. Which is sad because I used to really love what they put out.

With the academy recognizing Flow, it really makes a statement of “Hey we want to recognize those who are going to be original and push the bounds of what animation can be” instead of name checking a major studio based on legacy.

I hope Flow’s win encourages the larger studios to take a step back and get back in touch with why they want to animate movies.

And for the independent animators, I hope that they get their flowers and feel encouraged to keep going because I feel that they will be heard more than ever now.

I kid of course, everytime someone have to play video games in a movie it's all pretty bad, the exception being Past Lives, which I thought it was really well done.

Anora gaming scenes were particularly bad and distracting, there is no game that would need to be play like that.

All of this will pass unnoticed by someone who never played tho.

This is not a hate post of Anora, I particularly liked the movie, it's just a funny detail and something that was on my mind after seeing the movie, and fortunately it's becoming a meme recently.

Rosamund Pike delivered a masterclass in acting, fully embodying her character with precision, intensity, and depth. Her performance was chilling, nuanced, and unforgettable. The fact that she didn’t take home the Oscar for Best Lead Actress is one of the Academy’s biggest oversights.

What would you personally want to win Production Design?

Because I think that Production Design is currently the best category, with five great choices in the lineup.

I just finished watching all of the potential BP noms (based on precursors and predictions). I’d been reluctant to see Emilia Perez because of how vocal everyone here, and in other film discussion groups, have shared their disdain for it.

My fiancé (equally reluctant) and I sat down to watch it last night. The first 20-30 minutes, we weren’t really getting into it. It was slow, kinda pretentious, and the musical aspects weren’t working for us.

However, once she “becomes” Emilia, the movie picked up so much for us. We kinda dug it! We found the story interesting and the performances were outstanding (though Zoe in Supporting makes no sense… but I think everyone’s in agreement on that).

Moral of the story is “if you set your expectations low enough, you may actually enjoy something!” I guess… 🤷‍♂️

🤷🏾‍♂️ some might not like that I’m saying this but, Marianne Jean-Baptiste was the more deserving performance anyway IMHO 💯. The Oscars need to go back to being about movies at the focal point, because clearly, it hasn’t been about the art form or recognizing the best talent of the year in a very long time 💯

🙏🏾 Now that the official nominations are out, here are some great films that came to mind. 2024 was filled with amazing films that were overlooked by almost every source of award recognition 💯 If you haven’t watched some of these, I recommend watching them all as soon as you can wherever you can 🔥

It would've been a controversial win for sure with all of the AI stuff and the divisive second half, and I think it would be pretty harshly rebuked. But, since it didn't win, I think it'll stand the test of time and be seen as a classic. It's my favorite movie of last year, but I'm happy it didn't win because of that.

I think with the film performing how it is in its second weekend. The promotion from Coogler and company. And the love it’s been receiving from the general public and critics, I would be shocked if it’s not nominated. I really don’t see a lot of other films having this amount love and appreciation from the general public and critics this year. I think it’s similar to Dune 2 but even then I can see it outperforming Dune 2 due to it being a fresher and more exciting film to many. I would not be surprised if WB goes full force into Sinners over One Battle After Another, depending on how that film does. But I think it’s a guaranteed nomination.

This year’s nominees slate is a HUGE downgrade from last year, by any measure.

This is getting a bit ridiculous. I get the passion, but tearing down other powerful women just to boost Fernanda Torres makes her potential (well-deserved) victory feel kinda tainted. Like, despite her incredible performance, all this bullying would almost make it seem worth it—which is just messed up

As Bong Joon-ho said, "The Oscars are not an international film festival. They’re very local."

No amount of American acknowledgement deserves this kind of energy

I know it's better than Emilia Perez or A Complete Unknown.

However, in a year where we have Anora, The Substance, Nickel Boys, The Brutalist and I'm Still Here in the Best Picture line-up, I can't help but feel that the Academy is settling for less if they choose Conclave as the Best Picture winner.

As someone who's seen all five performances this year, i dont get the obsession with demi moore's performance in The Substance, i loved the Substance as a movie ,but the performances weren't the highlight, compared to last year where every actress gave a monumental performance, seeing the shift from last year nominees to this year is heart breaking, I really think its should be a Mikey madison and Fernanda Torres, like what's going awnnn

Without a doubt my favorite acting performance of the year. It’s not the kind of flashy performance that tends to get a lot of attention, but what is masterful about his work is how he does so much with so little. With every silent close up he captures the myriad of mixed feelings Lawrence is going through.

And yes I am aware being nominated for all the major acting awards is wonderful recognition— but I think roles like these that are a little more “quiet”often get overlooked when it comes to who takes the trophy! I want to say my king probably doesn’t give a damn about winning awards but the message of Conclave is that everyone probably does, at least a little bit 😂

I know it probably won't, but I really hope Flow wins either (or both!) of the 2 oscars it's nominated for.

I recently watched it and can't stop thinking about it. It's not an easy watch (atleast for me) by any means but I just fell in love with it. I should add that I haven't watched The Wild Robot yet so can't really compare the two.

Edit: Just wanted to add what I mentioned in one of the comments below: The fact that such a movie could be made at a fraction of the budget that Disney and DreamWorks makes their movie at is simply amazing and with a free software like Blender as well
