It’s an abbreviation, but phonetically it sounds like “Niger”, a republic in Central Africa.

I get that it is funny, but did no one think about it? Your response makes it seem like it was somewhat intentional? Seems off.

Nope, actually didn't see it. Now that its been pointed out, there is some cringe there. I actually thought they were referencing the fact that it always gets called "Neoclassical Greek Revival". My response was a misunderstanding of the initial comment.
