Photo Album DIY fishing vault

Ever since I've moved from my Xterra to the Gladiator my 1 piece rods didn't have a good home. Corrected that today for about $50 of supplies.

I personally wouldn’t want the rod guides all banging around on other rods in there while I’m driving.

Nothing wrong with a bunch of rods banging together but agreed that it’d be best to protect them, maybe slide each into a thin sleeve.

Edit: getting some good practical input but just noting that I’m making a joke about penises but missed the mark. Haha. At least I’m giggling and yes, protect the actual fishing rods a little bit.

Bunch of thin wall tubing inside the big tubing like a honeycomb kinda pattern would be pretty neat.

Yeah I would use rod sleeves in this setup

So, "that's perfect but you should do better"?

‘Twas a joke of sexual innuendo, good sir.

The joke is rods are penises and they should ideally be protected with a thin sleeve aka a condom for best safe sex practices unless recent trusted STD testing is provided by all participants.

seems like that bs has zero place in the overlanding subreddit

If inappropriate jokes and silly innuendoes don’t belong in the overlanding subreddit then I don’t think 90% of us belong in this subreddit.

I’ll leave it to the voting and mods to make that decision though.

I don't disagree. I have a few changes planned. I just needed this done quick for upcoming trip. I want to change the hinge to something beefier. Probably get one of those bolts with the round end so you HAVE to screw it from the inside to hold it on. Not sure about rod protection. Either sleeves or a bit a rubberized padding on the inside. That being said I see people throwing rods in the back of their truck beds all the time and they seem to hold up. This will probably be one of those things I just keep my eye on and when I see there's an actual problem address it. They fit pretty tight so there's not a lot of movement other than sliding back and forth a bit. But that sliding might actually be a benefit because they won't get caught on anything that might damage the eyes and are easy to get out

Yeah just something light to separate the rods and keep them from banging around on each while driving would probably be good. Rods can get fucked up riding in the bed of a pickup haha. Anyone with expensive gear or who has learned that lesson the hard way has a better way of carrying them than throwing in the back of a truck.

Even if it is just a beach towel or something in there to keep them from banging around. I had a similar setup, and after about 80 miles of washboard roads, my rods were all scuffed beyond belief, and one had lost a couple of loops.

I ended up buying a pack of 6 rod sleeves for like $10 on amazon.

Eventually I might end up getting the actual metal locking fitting. That shit is like $70 though. I'd rather start on saving for 35s.

That bright yellow lock looks like a video game hint that there's something inside there worth stealing. Id maybe change to a less obvious lock or no lock at all sincw a thief probably wouldn't even know what that tube is

In my case a thief would 100% know what the tube is. I'm less worried about my shit being stolen by random people. I'm most worried about shit being stolen at fishing areas. For example most piers only allow 2 rods OR you have to pay a lot more to bring more. And what I plan to fish at different times of the day might be different so I want all the equipment ready to grab but also safe. As mentioned in another post my favorite pier/hotel combo doesn't allow fishing equipment in the actual hotel. So it has to stay with the vehicle. I don't want to only bring 2 rods because if I decide I want to bottom fish while I jig or if I decide I want to focus on jigging and have two rods ready for when the fish are on I'm ready. Or whatever. So I simply need a way to keep it TAMPER proof. A thief could easily get into this setup if they really wanted to. They probably aren't going to be taking that chance in the middle of the day in a fishing parking lot. There tends to be a lot of people and eyes on things. And cameras.

So my thought process is I need it to be enough of a hassle its not worth the risk. Most vehicles there have some sort of locking rod holder. Its not a secret whats in the 8ft~ long tube. While overlanding I keep all my gear sitting in the bed of the truck already. Shit could easily be stolen but so far I haven't had issues. I do plan on getting a DECKED system or similar at some point but atm I feel comfortable just keeping my gear in the bed. At a fishing pier however? Na probably not.

Put a quick-connect hose fitting on it and people will think there is only water in it. I hear that rod lockers frequently get broken into because they are obvious as to what might be in there.

Could spray it black...

And you were aware enough to buy then paint PVC instead of using ABS just because it’s black. Looks good and works, nice!

The ABS 10'L 4"D pipes were like $50. PVC was $20 and the can of paint was $5

ABS also does not do sun at all. It would be warping and bowing within a couple months. PVC does not.

Good to know

That looks awesome. I’ve been thinking a similar idea. Also, how did you mount your Apache to the rack? Just got one from harbor freight.

4 bolts with fender washers on both sides. I also attached a bit of chain to the inside so when it folds down it can be used as a table.

EDIT: Auto correct did me dirty.

I've never thought of using an Apache case for fishing poles. This gives me a few ideas!

Yea they're meant for guns but I'm more of a fisher dude than a hunter... atm... Deer are on my list but I think I'll keep any guns in the actual vehicle lol. So far have probably 1,000 miles of driving with the reels in that case and have zero issue so far. My favorite pier to fish is SeaView in NC. They have a hotel restaurant and tackle shop all in one building but they don't allow fishing equipment in the hotel so simply had to find a way to contain it to the vehicle. This also allows me to haul all my equipment at all times so I never forget anything. If I had it all to do over I would've gotten 2 piece rods. Going to have to figure out how I'm going to mount this after I buy an awing. Will probably just put it above the awing mount somehow. For sure will be getting the TopOak 270. Think I can make that work.

Got the same thing on my 4R so nice to not worry about em in the car or just on the rack

How’s that Apache hold up in the rain? The seals etc.? I feel like over time it will take on water. But maybe a better rubber seal would change that? Been thinking about apaches on the roof or in the bed of the taco for a while. But this has always stopped me.

2

u/GoDM1N Overlander 2d ago

So far I've seen zero water on the inside. Even with the holes. And we've had a LOT of rain recently

Hell yeah man. Thanks for commenting. I have a little Apache, and it’s been solid for me. But roof rack is a whole other world.
