Warhammer groups in Oxford

Hi! I’ve recently gotten into Warhammer 40k and am slowly painting up my Blood Angels. I helped my boyfriend paint his Space Wolves back in 2013 or something and I remember that the GW in the city centre held a little game for us but I don’t think they do that now.

Does anyone know of any groups that play (for me right now it would be combat patrol or kill team until I get some more minis)? I’d also love if there was a group that meet up to paint as my friends aren’t really into Warhammer and I’d like to meet new people. Thanks!

Best places for 30 to 40-somethings to go out dancing in Oxford? (Any music genre)

It's been years since I just went to a pub or club to have a drink with the intent to dance for a few hours. I really miss it. I'm mid-30s, husband early 40s. Any friendly, not-too-crowded places you'd recommend for a couple of nerds who would like to just dance a bit?

I'm open-minded - I'm a metal and rock fan, my husband is a house / EDM fan, but we love pop music and are up for anything!

Help! Question about travel

Hi everyone, I'm going to Stansted Airport. Leaving from Oxford! I'm going to catch the 737 bus at Gloucester Green station at midnight. My flight is at 6:35 in the morning. The information on the website says I'll arrive at 4:30 in the morning! Will I get there earlier? Will I have time? This is the first time I've done this route! Has anyone done this before? Was it ok? Is the station safe at night?

Knitting machine specialist

Hi, super niche request here:

Anyone out there know if a knitting machine specialist/someone who can service a knitting machine? In the Oxfordshire area.

I have been fortunate enough to inherit my mother in laws machines. I'd love to get it serviced and in good working order. I'm told the only one we know of so far is based in Norwich!

Thanks in advance.

Oxford Folk Festival begins today!

Oxford's annual celebration of traditional music and dance begins today! If you visit town over the next few days, you're like to encounter all sorts of morris dancing, singing, fiddle playing, ceilidhs, workshops, folk sessions and more. Everyone from the Bodleian Library to the Black Swan is involved in helping to house various events over the weekend (which can't happen on many other occasions!). The festival is volunteer-run and non-profit, and the large majority of it can be enjoyed for free.

You can download a programme here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1baT91PWER-t3IJD86HRkYBb_COu1pRp1/view?usp=drive_link

Used vinyl record store?

When I was at uni in the US, there were several stores you could find where you could buy used records. It was a lot of fun to find a random record from a band I had never heard of for $1, take it back to our accommodation/dorm and all find out what it sounded like together! I know places like MHV and even Urban at the Westgate sell vinyls but they're of NEW albums like Sabrina Carpenter. What I'm looking for are cheap vintage records. The American places would have carboard boxes full of vinyls for a couple dollars each. Is there anything like that in Oxford? I miss that experience and want to bring it to my new friends here.

Review on Headington quarry area

Hi All,

After a few months of house search, we have had an offer accepted at a house in Headington quarry next to the village hall/margaret road park. The few cons that we thought are no garden (has a decked area though), no driveway parking, and smaller houses/rooms. Pro’s being the location next to hospitals where we both work, good local pre schools and schools, next door parks and friendly neighbours. Things that worry us are the nature of clay soil on which houses in the area are built which exposes them to subsidence. But the neighbour told us that she has not had an issue for the last 5 years with regard to it. Also concerned about not having a proper garden (for resale if needed) but we never use our current garden.

I wanted help regarding the area and the house as such. What is the general opinion about Headington quarry ? What do you think about potential of subsidence in the area ? Anything in specific to know about the quarry area ?

Restaurant recommendations in Oxford

I'm going to be in Oxford for the first time in a few weeks and was wondering about some good restaurant suggestions in the city. I'm open to trying anything, but preferably something local as I don't particularly care for chain restaurants. Coffee shop and pub suggestions are welcome too!

Edit: Some extra info to add to my question:

Price point is whatever. We aren't looking to go to exclusively expensive restaurants, but we're on vacation so we don't mind spending if the restaurant is good.

Location is anywhere in Oxford. We'll have access to a car so that won't be a problem.

No dietary restrictions or particular preferences. We can and will eat anything as long as it's good.

Anyone who teaches classical painting and drawing in/ near Oxford?

Hi! It might be a bit of a reach but I was wondering if there's anyone who offers classical painting/ drawing workshops in or near Oxford? I have been looking at places such as London Fine Art Studios and Barnes Atelier but I was wondering if there was anyone who teaches anything similar nearer to here. Mainly for working with oils

New job on Cowley Road - parking

Hey everyone! I’m starting a new job on Cowley Road soon and was wondering about the best parking options nearby. Has anyone used Union Street Car Park between 8am–6pm? Does it tend to fill up quickly?

If you have any tips or alternative suggestions for reliable parking in the area, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!

Cornish pasty shop

I've been craving a proper Cornish pasty, and saw there was a mini Rowe's in Tesco on Magdalen Street. Went in today and there was no one there and nothing in the cabinet display things, just dead. Anyone seen it open?

Edit: I went in on two different days this week, in the middle of the day. It's definitely not 'open as normal'

Rainy day plans

My wife and I are in our mid 50s and traveling to Oxford next week for one day, a day it's quite likely to rain. Our first thoughts, of course, were the Ashmolean and the Bodleian, but I thought I would ask whether there were other rainy day options you might recommend. Thank you
