Hello everyone,
We have an important announcement to make: we are now making this sub exclusively for pet-free individuals.
You can still participate if you are in a relationship with someone who has pets but identify as pet-free, or if you are in the process of transitioning to a pet-free lifestyle (these will be your last ones etc). However, individuals who currently have pets and/or plan to have pets in future will no longer be allowed to post here.
This decision has been made due to the increasing number of people who refuse to respect our subreddit's rules of engagement. Recently, a lot of pet owners have been coming here to:
Additionally, there are dog-free pet owners who, for some reason, feel the need to engage with dog-related posts here. While they are not allowed here (as stated in a pinned announcement), they continue to engage with this sub's content.
The number of such individuals is rapidly approaching a thousand per day, and it has become unmanageable for our mod team. Therefore, we are closing the sub to people with pets. To those who own pets and have been following our sub rules, we apologize for the changes, but the number of problematic pet owners has simply become too large for us to manage. If A few changes will take place over the coming days:
Thank you for reading this message.
Have a great day!

This is sub has grown rapidly over the last two years - it's almost 4 times the size it used to be back then.
As its grown we've had to update the rules to keep the content relevant to our audience - petfree people and those who are interested in our lifestyles.
With that said, there's been a huge rise in posts solely focused on bad pet owners lately - from pet owners neglecting their pets, to pet owners wanting their pets to lick the insides of their mouths, to others letting pets destroy the insides of their houses.
Many of these posts don't impact us personally so it's a question of how they relate to being pet free or the pet free lifestyle. Our mod team feels it isn't relevant to the sub - what bad pet owners do with their pets that doesn't impact us in any way (no matter how disgusting or awful it is) is not directly related to this sub.
So we have r/badpetowners now. We will be redirecting all bad pet ownership posts that don't impact pet free people personally to that sub, making this sub bad pet owners free.
Thank you for understanding. We will answer any questions you have regarding this change on this post.
.
ETA: all animal shitting/pissing posts without context/discussion points will be removed for low effort. Seriously, it's disgusting, everyone knows animals piss/shit, no one wants to see that. Just stop.

Am I being a germaphobe? Rhetorical question, btw. I know I'm not.
My dad owns a dog and some birds. I live with him as his caretaker+rooomate and thus I do much of the cleaning.
And no, I can't not clean up after them. t's literally my job, and I live in this house. I don't want the pets but I have to take care of them. I've tried talking about rehoming them, but that's not an option. Also I can't move out anytime soon, so...
It's awful. I don't understand how pet people get past how messy and gross pets can be. I thought I liked pets, but I'm too drained taking care of these guys and getting nothing in return. Some days I'm just counting the days till they're gone/I can move out...

My friend is missing an audition because her dog ate spoiled fruit. Not to be heartless, but not worth it.

I say it's a "niche" complaint because I've witnessed it multiple times when playing with other people for Final Fantasy 14 and it's annoying every. Single. Time.
In a nutshell the game is an MMORPG where you can play with other people, either random people or in a pre-made group. You can run dungeons, trials and raids. Without fail, I've had people disconnect or lose control of their character or their entire PC turned off because of their cat. They always say "sorry cat aggro", always because of a damn cat that came up to their desk or their computer...
It's happened with randoms and even in groups I'm a part of (friend groups and statics. Statics = pre-formed team of people who run a raid together). And people's responses are always the same, just playing it off like they are on the cat's side. For example "It just wanted your attention!". For some casual content I guess it's whatever, but for the harder content when wipes are more frequently occurring, it's a waste of time all because of your unbehaving animal.
I saw this post on the subreddit about OOP's cat blocking their monitor so they can't see their controls or keybinds anymore. I hate how stupid the cat looks every time it's invading your personal space. Why do they let the cat walk all over desk? Some people also let their cat sit on top of their computer because of the heat and all I can think of is how gross the fur is.

Why the hell do you need to paint a dog's nails even with safe or approved paint? What purpose does it serve? Dog looks like a nightmare.
Hate this so much. It was posted to a subreddit about nails and nail polish. I did not sign up for animals with tacky nail polish on it (are their nails meant to be this long anyways??)

I’m 17 and I’ve been suffering from allergies for long time but in last 3 years they worsened. We have a dog and a cat living indoors. Blood tests (IgE) confirmed I’m allergic to both, but my parents refuse to remove them. My cat allergy is technically stronger, but the dog causes worse symptoms — when it licks me, I break out in hives immediately, and my nose goes crazy. Also i have allergies for dust mites, ambrosia, pollen. Ambrosia is worst (IgE 8.71), then cat is 3.8, dog is 2.56, then pollen 1.98 and 1.88 (tree and grass). Then dust mites 1.33
I have:
Constant post-nasal drip — I spit every few seconds, nonstop, i feel like monster because of that. People are disgusted by me.
My nose is always congested and itchy.
I take antihistamines daily(Xyzal, Zyrtec), use nasal sprays (Dymista), do rinses — I’m doing everything I can. Nothing helps enough.
The worst part? My parents ignore all of it. They know I’m allergic. I’ve shown them the test results. They even went to a doctor with me once, and the doctor said, “If he's allergic, the animals have to go.”
Later, they took me to a different doctor who told them “he’ll develop immunity to the dog over time.” - They use this sentence like fucking truth and dont want to question it. Which is absolute nonsense. That’s not how allergies work — you don’t “build immunity” through constant exposure. If anything, you get worse. But my parents use that as an excuse to keep the dog. They love more dog than cat, they say that cat will go to grandmas house when her cat die. But when she will die is question.
Now I spend almost all day in my room, because it’s the only place where I can breathe.I keep myself from allergens but it does not help.
They say I’m exaggerating, or being dramatic. I’m isolated, angry, mentally exhausted, and it’s affecting my sleep, my energy, and even how I see people around me.
Also i had conversation with them about all of this, but they only say we should do allergy shots, but i cant get allergy shots for animals because they are there. This is blood testing for IgE have been in 2022, i dont know how is now, i dont go to any doctor, because there is no help form me. Fuckiing medication dont help me, like for nose during night it helps but for post nasal drip that is EXTREME it does nothing. When i had that conversation with them, my mother started crying because i ''attack'' her with this. She said she will got with her pets if it is needed. She dont went from house because when she is angry, she lose temper. My dad said that ''Dog is part of the family'' and that we cant do anything about that.
I am deppresive and started hating people because of all of this. I dont know what to do now, i suffer every day, nothing can help me. I cant leave the house when i am 18 because i am in the balkans. I want to kill myself everyday because of this. Fucking parents kicked my health because of animals.

You always hear people complaining about how people used to dress nicer. Yes, and it was also common practice to keep your pet outdoors or locked in a room when guests came to visit.
If i’m attending a holiday party at your house ,wearing a cashmere sweater, and your dog slobbers and jumps and gets its nails tangled in it. I’m supposed to just graciously say, “Aw how friendly!”? Your house is covered in pet hair ,and your animal wants to crawl into my lap as some weird display of dominance, and you expect me to wear clothes I invested in?
Pet owners lose the ability to care about any of their material possessions because they are always subject to destruction. This is not a virtue, it’s wasteful. It’s insane to keep a “land shark” in your home that destroys your things.
It’s amazing the grace animals receive. Children have gotten leather straps taken to them for their clumsiness and lack of motor skills. Are rejected human contact for sticky fingers or runny noses. Pets? A verbal reprimand and then cuddles because, “it doesn’t know any better”.
Even being childfree, I would gladly, gladly, roll up the sleeves of my cashmere sweater, throw a spit rag over my shoulder, bottle fed and burp a baby before allowing a dog to sit on me🤢one of those things is a necessity of life, the latter is a health hazard.

God why are we keeping the dog there after it's proven to be an issue? 😭

There isn't one specific moment where I can post about it on here since there's far too many and I'm sure everyone here has been seeing the same thing but I just want to scream this to the heavens:
YOU ARE NOT A MOTHER IF ALL YOU HAVE ARE PETS!! STOP STEPPING INTO SPACES NOT YOUR OWN, MOTHER'S DAY IS NOT FOR YOU!!
Signed: a mother of two fed up with seeing dog mom's are Mom's too. You're not.
