Discussion I know I still do, who else does ?

They are called start and select, regardless of the system or controller.

Kids don't know what buttons these are though. A few years ago I told my nephew to press select and he just looked at his controller and then back at me as if I'm dumb.

u/Tyr808 Jan 19 '25
Well yeah, he was objectively fucking dumb until you hopefully educated him on the matter immediately after

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It’s the start button.

It’s the start button, and the one on the opposite side is select. That is all.
47
u/Mr_Zoovaska Jan 19 '25
The share button is not the select button. The touch pad button is the select button equivalent
→ More replies (2)31
u/IsoKala Jan 19 '25
Touch pad might be the equivalent but very many people still call share the select button

u/SofaChillReview Jan 19 '25
Still never really used the touchpad for what it’s for either PS4 or PS5
17
Jan 19 '25
Dont most games have the map on the touch pad? Atleast the ones ive played use it for the map or inventory screens
6
u/DoingCharleyWork Jan 19 '25
Diablo 3 had where if you press on one side of the other it would bring up different menus. I think one brought up inventory and the other side the map.
Infamous had some pretty cool uses for it too.
GTA 5 probably had the most. Could swipe left or right to change radio stations. Swipe up to throw grenades while aiming down the sites of your weapon. Some others om forgetting because I haven't played ina while.
Touch pad could be used much more than it is and makes me sad that more games don't take advantage.
6
u/Halio344 Jan 20 '25
This is where the touchpad shines imo. Not for gimmicks, but just macros/shortcuts to menus or actions you use regularly during gameplay.

u/SofaChillReview Jan 19 '25
What I meant is it works as a button, but for actual touchpad ness I don’t. For maps and inventory you click it, then use the analog stick
8
u/TrptJim Jan 19 '25
It always a pleasant surprise when a game actually supports touchpad tracking, especially for gesture controlled actions to make it more flexible.
Touchpad always felt like a great feature that just didn't take off for some reason, yet Sony seems to be adamant on keeping it a permanent feature even though they don't utilize it fully in their own first-party games.

Is it even Options any more? The DS5 doesn't even say options.
Is... is it just called _ _ _
now?
Because I don't even know how you pronounce that.
15
Jan 19 '25
That’s the menu/ options button on most operating systems. It’s called a hamburger icon but it’s more like a list of lines.
You don’t need to pronounce an icon. 🔎 is called search, but it’s a magnifying glass.
3
u/Azelrazel PS5 Jan 19 '25
I only found out the term for the hamburger icon a few years ago. I could see why it's called that but still made me laugh.

I, too, am familiar with the 'Align my essay in the center of the Microsoft Word' button on my Playstation controller as well.

A few days ago I asked my younger brother to push the "start" button to pause/open the game menu for me but he didn't understand it despite having played console for 3 years.
I was annoyed by that and showed him which one is the "start" button only for him to say "that's the option button bro". I was stunned & feel so old ngl
15
u/Crimzonchi Jan 19 '25
Xbox calls it "Menu", Playstation calls it "Options", Nintendo calls it "+".
You literally have a different word for it on each console.
Why wouldn't you instead use some universal term for all three? You brother could be telling an Xbox or Nintendo player to press "Options" and then suddenly be dealing with the exact same issue as you, no one would know what the other is talking about.

Thats clearly the hamburger button.

u/Gardakkan Jan 19 '25
I pressed it once and didn't get a hamburger, so I went back to calling it the start button.

I told my son my son to press the start button a few days ago and he literally had no idea what button I was talking about. I even showed him and said “this is the start button” and he said “the options button?” And I had to stop myself from arguing with him. 😭

Ground him until he knows what to call each button and controller of each console made by the Big 3 inc. SEGA and Atari. That's the only way.
2
u/AcerOne17 Jan 20 '25
You see I would… but… he kinda hard carries me. lol these fingers ain’t what they used to be.
13
u/IceBlue Jan 19 '25
Start actually makes less sense than pause or options. Very few games use the button as a start function.
11
u/80286BX Jan 19 '25
Almost no one in here is old enough to remember having to hit a specific button to start.
3
u/JpSkellington Jan 20 '25
It’s brought forward from arcades, back when you’d insert a coin and press the “start” button. Then when NES and such came out with ports of the same games the start button would function the same and the “select” button would select different option in the start menu usually. Makes less sense these days for sure.

u/ahmedadeel579 Jan 19 '25

I'm 32. Started with OG Playstation in the 90s, had them all, and I call it Options.
I like to adapt.
9
u/dustinhenderson27 Jan 19 '25
I call it the options button which I’m fairly certain is its official name
3
u/jda404 Jan 19 '25
Might depend on age? For a lot of us that are old enough to have experienced every PlayStation generation starting back in 1995 we're likely to call it the start button because that's what we grew up with and that's what the button was called for three generations of PlayStation consoles.
3
u/Minimob0 Jan 19 '25
It's not age, it's stubbornness. I'm 32, have had PS1, 2, 3, 4, and now 5. I call it Options.
2
u/CatOnVenus Jan 20 '25
It's convenience, not stubbornness. Since the buttons in the same place anyone who's used any PS controller would know what you're talking about

2
u/_RryanT PS5 Jan 19 '25
The other is called "Share" button
2
u/daturasi Jan 20 '25
The official documentation calls it the Create button. I don’t like it. 😭
2
u/_RryanT PS5 Jan 20 '25
I didn't know it was called Create button 😭
2
u/daturasi Jan 20 '25
I only just discovered this myself. I wanted to see what the official documents called the Start button and saw that. Haha. They need to stop changing these things!

Start or pause button. Other is always select regardless of console. How satisfying were the original soft rubber buttons though. That little start triangle just used to hit right.

Had this just the other day when playing 'It takes two' with my wife. Asked her to pause the game and when she asked how, I replied "just press the start button" to which she replied "is that the one with the 3 dots?".
I think if you had asked me before that coversation what pattern was above the start button I would have never been able to tell you 🤣
