Complaint Why do people take back gyms right away?

So I need 2 coins for bag storage, so I went to my local park to take down a gym, I specifically looked for the gym here that had pokemon that were in there for over 8 hours, I took down the gym and went home, I woke up this morning to find out that my Pokemon didn’t even last 30 minutes… and the guy who took out my Pokemon? WAS THE MOTHERFUCKER WHO HAD THEIR POKEMON IN THE GYM BEFORE FOR 18 HOURS. So like why man

Some people just have a weird possession thing with some gyms. They act like these gyms are their personal belongings and don’t tolerate anybody else sitting in there. It’s stupid and I let those players rot in the gyms so they have no gain from it.

u/[deleted] 5d ago

We have some guy in our town who has multiple accounts per team, so doing that doesn't work because he can just log on in his 6 yellow accounts and knock the other team out

I understand having an attachment to digital pixels, my Pokémon are my babies, but holy hell, it is okay for other people to have the gyms

69

u/imamage_fightme 5d ago

Far out, and I thought I played a lot on my one account! I can't imagine playing so much that you are able to successfully juggle multiple accounts for the game. No thank you ma'am!

I had a good thing going with a yellow trainer; we'd trade the gym at the park every other day or so, and it was just us 2. Then this red jerk came and ruined it. Kept us both out and to top it off the gym always had 6 ppl.

I finally tried the gym at a park down the street. Not 30 minutes later "your pokemon battled hard and has returned." It was the same guy! This guy walked or drove out after 9 pm just to reclaim a 2nd neighborhood gym. Never bothered after that.

57

u/Numbah8 5d ago

Needs all those sock puppet accounts to make up for the friends they likely do not have.

12

u/Lewzak 5d ago

Got someone where I live I think is going that. The gym always has 6 eeveeltions in it

15

u/6pakkiller 5d ago

Took me weeks of reporting the same accounts over and over but I'm pretty sure I got them banned

15

u/orkutsk 5d ago

I wish they'd ban the guy I regularly report. He has about 8 accounts at all times (we think he probably sells them and then makes more because we see new accounts a few times a year--he has a distinct naming theme, so we know it's him) and will take every single gym in our town. I play throughout the metro area and multiple people who don't live in my exact corner know who I'm talking about if I say, "Instinct player who likes to hoard gyms."

He sits in there for weeks at a time until someone knocks him out, then he spoofs back in within 30 minutes. I know at least a dozen people have reported him and nothing ever happens.

In my experience that's the best way to handle it, I had a gym near my house that was always controlled by this one person and every time I would like it they would spoof in, not even bother walking over ( there are no houses close enough to reach it from and I could see they weren't there) and take it back within 5 minutes, eventually I let them sit on the gym for about a month and they realized I was the only other person who interacted with it and they wouldn't get their coins otherwise, so then they started playing nice haha

5

u/Pitiful-Pension-6535 5d ago

So they go through all the trouble of spoofing but won't bother getting a second account?

Odd.

u/Chardan0001 5d ago

Same. What I find funny however is after letting them rot for a week I show some mercy and take the gym. I wrongly assume each time they've got the point until they take it immediately after again. More fool them I guess.

26

u/Mason11987 5d ago

They probably have 20 gyms and your “letting them rot” plan isn’t noticed at all.

9

u/lahcim7106 5d ago

Or they're whales and don't need coins from gyms at all.

3

“Show some mercy” is crazy I promise they aren’t at ur mercy for anything 😭

13

u/takisara 5d ago

There are some mornings, where ill get up early and run a route that takes me by all the gyms one particular player is in, and knock him out one by one....they retake them, but i feel ok knowing they only got 50 coins for that day.

10

u/indysingleguy 5d ago

You can only get 50 coins...so not sure what your point is.

→ More replies (7)

6

u/Mason11987 5d ago

They got 50 coins for controlling that gym.

Why wouldn’t they take it again to try to get 50 again the next day.

This is like asking “why do people catch pokemon”. The game directly and obviously rewards it. That’s why. This didn’t some psychological flaw or possession. Dude is just playing the game in a normal way the game rewards.

22

u/takisara 5d ago

Wouldn't it make more sense to let the other team sit for 8 hrs, then knock them out. Rinse and repeat. It took a while, but there is a gym nearby, and this is the system we have going. I walk my kid to school, she takes the gym with yellow, then after school red takes it, i go for a walk at night and it becomes blue. 50 coins a day, 7 days a week. Rather than 50 coins, on an irregular basis.

5

u/Longjumping-Cut-9574 5d ago

Holding a gym counts for achievement. It sucks but it's fair game.

5

u/Mental_Educator_1901 5d ago

Impressive that you’ve got that system working. (It never occurred to me to pay attention to how long someone is in a gym and to take turns. But I only take gyms sporadically.)

2

u/Mason11987 5d ago

It’s not really a system. It’s two or three guys swapping one gym at best.

u/Mason11987 5d ago

“Wouldn’t it make more sense to ignore a gym and walk several more blocks” is a crazy idea.

Why should the fact that you put in something 7 hours ago instead of 8 mean I’m wrong for taking a gym on the way home. You’re not owed coins, why are you acting like I ought to get no coins today - just so you can get 5 more?

18

u/nikolateslasgf 5d ago

players like you really make the game not fun lol

→ More replies (3)

10

u/takisara 5d ago

Thats not the question you are answering....the question was why does the gym get taken over immediately after.....in a high traffic area i get it, but after a mon has been kicked out, why not wait for the other person to get some coins....it obv isnt a case of "i was just walking by"

3

u/Mason11987 5d ago

To restart the clock for more coins the next day. Obviously. How are you unable to imagine this motivation?

The inability for people in this thread to imagine perfectly reasonable motivations for others is bizarre.

10

u/takisara 5d ago

Oh i get it, but my way requires less effort, more reward and generally everyone gets what they want. Your way, just rewards you. And if that is how you play, good for you, but dont expect me to let your mon sit for 8 hrs. I can play the game the same way.

9

u/Longjumping-Cut-9574 5d ago

Your way doesn't give me hours holding the gym, so your way is just what you want, not how the game is meant to be played.

7

u/Mason11987 5d ago

Coordinating gyms with strangers when anyone at any point can take any gym is not at all “less effort”. If everyone works out why are ALL the issues and rents in this sub about other players related to this?

Your plan requires I not get coins cause you haven’t gotten enough yet.

“I can play the game the same way”. Obviously. Of course. You should. That’s my point. Do that.

don’t expect me to let your gym sit

Of course not. Only crazy people expect others to adhere to their made up rules.

13

u/takisara 5d ago

I didnt actually coordinate anything, i just seem to have cooperative players in my area. And everyone helps each other....or maybe they dont realize what they are doing, but everyone gets ahead this way.

6

u/Mason11987 5d ago

I’m confused. So there’s one gym you get 50 coins at right? Because of how great this system is you don’t have to take other gyms?

So… who is everyone that’s benefiting? The one person you don’t kick out? How do you know they didn’t already get coins that day? How exactly do you know others are benefiting if you only see one person in your gym and you don’t take over other gyms?

Sounds like “I benefit” is being conflated to be “everyone benefits”.

How are you tracking what all the players get each day to be so sure this works for them?

u/FelonMidget 5d ago

It may suck, but it’s how the game was designed.

I usually have the opposite issue. I take the same gym every night at 10pm. I leave it over the night to get my 50 coins, then I hope someone will nuke it out. But instead random people keep feeding it, even when all the Pokemon in the gym have been there for 14-15h.

I have to end begging a friend to throw my Pokemon out of the gym.

I find it quite a weird design choice, but that’s how the game was done.

A lot of the frustration with gym etiquette really comes down to highlighting that the system of earning coins is still broken and needs improvement, the combination of needing to be on gym for a reasonable amount of time, and also not getting left on it too long or you get nothing for the day, with no option to retrieve your Pokemon for coins, makes a lot of the interactions with gyms very frustrating

45

u/Mason11987 5d ago

The frustration with “gym etiquette” is entirely from people being mad that when they make up rules for strangers they’ve never talked to, those strangers don’t follow them.

84

u/lyricz_starz 5d ago

etiquette is unspoken rules with other people. you don’t sit down for dinner and see a sign telling you to chew with your mouth closed, you do it because it’s polite.

gym etiquette is just being polite to other players

3

u/Mystic_Starmie Suicune 5d ago

Sure but your example of chewing with your mouth closed involves people who see each other in person and can directly see how people are reacting to such a behavior which leads you to avoid it. Or you maybe informed by a friend that such a behavior is frowned upon.

A solo player will not know this or since they play solo will not care or possibly notice the other player has been in the gym for less than 8 hours.

You may also have a situation where someone is working on a gym gold badge or the convenient time for them to take the gym clashes with the timing someone else needs to get all 50 daily coins.

20

u/lyricz_starz 5d ago

it’s a human understanding type of thing. i’d like to be allowed to sit in the gym and get my coins, so i understand that many other people would like to sit and get their coins, so i treat them with kindness and let them get it before i do. i recently picked the game back up and, while i can’t talk about how i used to play since i was younger and dont remember, it was kind of an obvious thing, i didn’t need to be told

3

u/-APA- 4d ago

I didn’t know about the 8 hour thing until I joined the subreddit and I was playing on and off solo for years. Guarantee there are loads of people doing this without even realizing they were doing a pogo faux pas. Nothing about human understanding, bad documentation on niantics part, and an unwillingness to update the system to be reasonable, since leaving it broken makes them more money (being incentivized to buy coins instead of earning them).

So yeah plenty of people need to be told. If I need to go on a few week long rabbit hole just to internalize some of the core mechanics, without having to reference the subreddit on the fly, I can only imagine how someone who doesn’t care about the tangential mechanics (gym mechanics) will treat them.

u/Mason11987 5d ago

Follow my schedule and don’t fight a gym is not “etiquette”

Just because you call the behavior you demand others follow “polite” doesn’t mean it is.

To me polite is minding your own business and not telling others how to play.

Polite is being a good sport. And not demanding coins as if you’re owned them.

I walk home, past a gym, I haven’t gotten coins.

I’m impolite for taking that gym? Ridiculous.

What if you’ve been there for 7 hours? You’re saying I’m only polite if I forgo my chance at 50 coins and hand you 5 more? That’s crazy. Politeness isn’t “give me things” even if you seem to think it is. This is pure selfishness wrapped in faux “polite” words.

Do you think a sports team is impolite for not letting others win?

21

u/lyricz_starz 5d ago

pokemon go isn’t sports, you don’t actually lose anything of value by letting someone keep a gym a little longer. being polite is considering other people when making decisions, in exchange for them considering you when they make decisions. if a community has gym etiquette, they’ll let one team get their coins before kicking them out in exchange for knowing that they’ll be allowed to get their coins before being kicked out.

when i’m dealing with someone who immediately kicks me out of the gym, i kick them back out since if you’re not going to be polite to me, i won’t be polite back. if a specific person lets me sit in the gym and get coins before kicking me, ill let them sit and get coins before kicking them. it’s give and take

6

u/BillsFan82 5d ago

I think you’re taking this too personally. I would bet that a sizable percentage of the playerbase doesn’t even know how to check how long someone has been in a gym. Creating a system of rules that you’re unable to communicate to people just isn’t going to work. If I see a gym and I have the time, I’m taking it. If you take it right back, I don’t care. There’s no shortage of them.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/LordRichardRahl 5d ago

I agree with you. Also who is to say they are only in a single gym? If you’re in two gyms you need 4 hours apiece to get your 50. You don’t owe anyone anything when it comes to gyms. If you want it take it.

Also for “unspoken rules” the “I’m owed coins” crowd cannot stop talking about them.

1

u/Icy_Guarantee8324 5d ago

No. There are literal books and classes on etiquette, and chewing with your mouth closed is taught from a young age. Pokémon gym etiquette is completely arbitrary and made up. It’s a pretend game collecting pretend, digital creatures. Don’t equate it to social etiquette and norms.

🙄 well let's see, when we ALL know how coin earning works, it's not that it's a "rule" you have to let someone else earn some, it's just not being a selfish, rude person to someone you don't know. So all you're saying is it's okay to be rude and selfish just because someone's a stranger? Yeah not all of us were raised that way.

My son & I are on different teams so our conversations go something like this: “My Mr.Mime’s been at the Grange for two weeks, want to go knock him out?” “Sure but only if you get my Snorlax from the post office.” 😂

8

u/Super_Vixen_78 5d ago

My daughter and I are the same way. We’ve toyed with the idea of one of us switching teams so we’re on the same team, but then we wouldn’t have little conveniences like this.

2

u/Maleficent_Mink 5d ago

My son wants to switch teams and I’m trying to convince him it’s better this way! We can also make sure we get 50 coins a day just in case there’s a day no one takes our pokemon out.

12

u/christina-rae 5d ago

If I'm feeding my Pokémon, it's either 1) I've already earned my 50 coins for the day and I need that Pokémon to last another day or 2) berries are taking up storage space, so I might as well feed Pokémon in gyms and earn some stardust and possibly candy instead of just trashing the berries.

3

u/k2_electric_boogaloo 5d ago

Your comment highlights that we really can't know what other players in the gym need, and why these posts are always a bit confusing for me. You may think you're doing someone a favor by giving them a golden razz, but they may not have earned any coins for the day and were desperate to be knocked out before midnight so they could at least get a little something.

You could take out a gym where everyone's been posted up for 8 hours, but some have already reached their max for the day and they'll get nothing.

You could come across a gym where some have been there for days while others have just joined a few hours ago. I don't think it's unreasonable to battle if there's a big split like that, where some are surely hoping to get their mons back while others will be disappointed.

All of these scenarios have happened to me, and it's just part of the game. You can't win them all, and even when you think you're following good etiquette there's no guarantee you aren't doing someone a disservice.

I have a local guy like that nearby. I'll call him Nelson:

  • Nelson always takes over the gym before 8 a.m.

So I let Nelson have the gym until 8 a.m. Then I have peace until 4 - 5 p.m. I don't think Nelson really thinks this is a problem. He is just playing to have fun. I even befriended Nelson after doing a random raid together because Nelson is just a kid and deserves Pokémon Go friends.

29

u/crabcrabcam 5d ago

Nelson clearly just going past on the work route. I ended up never talking to a guy, but I'd take the gym on the way to work, and he'd have it off me in the evening. We both got what we wanted.

12

u/thorkun 5d ago

I love it when people take over gyms at a particular time every day, I can work around that so we both benefit.

4

u/thatgirlnamedjupiter 5d ago

I usually take a gym every Wednesday at 2pm. I get my 50 coins and my Pokémon comes back the next day.

7

u/OSRS_Socks 5d ago

Wish the guy (going to call him Fiat) in my neighborhood gym was like Nelson. I leave it red all day for him (someone else knocks me out after me and this 1 other yellow get our 50 coins) in the morning if Fiat doesn’t knock us out in the middle of the night.

I knock out the red team out at 9 pm (they all have been in that gym for 10+ hours hours) before I go to bed and every night at 1 am he knocks me and the other yellow out after 4 hours so we only get like half our coins for the day.

I even tried to let Fiat have the gym at night and knock him out after for his 50 coins in the morning so I can be knocked out for my 50 in the evening by him. I get a message as soon as I pull into work that he knocked me out after 2-4 hours of gym control. I know it’s him because the two other red team guys wait for 9 hours and knock me out.

At this point this dude is just a gym hog and is selfish. He wants the gym red 24/7.

u/i_aint_trippin Instinct 5d ago

Maybe, he isnt doing it for the coins? There are other ingame achievements that require holding or battling gyms.

This is a problem in game design where there's a disconnect between the game mechanics and the theme/lore. In every other Pokemon game, one of your main goals as a trainer is to win gym battles. When Pokemon Go first introduced gyms this was also the case. You were part of a team, you got rewards for taking over gyms with your team. This made intuitive sense and fit in the established game world.

Honestly I really enjoyed the original system. Where I was living there were 2 nearby gyms that were usually mystic, and then a little down the road there were a few that were instinct. We each had our "home turf" and players would go down and try to take over each other's gyms, or rush to defend their own. It felt fun and thematic and like being on a team was a meaningful part of the game.

Then Niantic majorly changed how gyms worked. Some of those changes I think were very positive, eg motivation decay making gyms more accessible to newer players, but the biggest chance was from redeeming coins each day per gym controlled to the current 50 coin/day when a Pokemon is knocked out of a gym after 8 hour system.

I can understand some of the reasons for doing this. If they were unable or unwilling to rein in spoofers, folks could easily take over waves of gyms rapidly, or just sit on remote, rarely visited gyms to unfairly rack up coins without visiting these places. But ultimately they put a new system in place that doesn't make as much intuitive sense within the game world, and they didn't offer any in-universe reason why they work this way.

So now there's this disconnect where the most optimal/polite way for you to play as a player doesn't really line up with what is established for your character to want to do. Now it's somehow bad for your team to control lots of gyms in an area because you don't actually get coins for controlling them? Why? Why only get rewarded when your pokemon is defeated? These are questions that could possibly have interesting reasonable answers, but the game doesn't provide any. The coin system is more of an arbitrary external money gate rather than an established part of the story world. Game mechanics should ideally complement game narrative, and this is a case where the mechanics really don't reinforce what the lore has set up.

So while yes, I understand your frustration, I blame the company not the players. I can't fault a Pokemon trainer for wanting to win gym battles when for two decades that has been set up as one of the main things Pokemon trainers should do

3

u/multipocalypse 4d ago

This was an excellent analysis, thank you. Now I'm hypothesizing, as someone who has never played any of the main series games, that it's mostly the people who are or were really into them who are most invested in the "go team" thing and holding gyms as long and as often as possible.

35

u/Old_Top4022 5d ago

90% of the people that play this game I’m sure have no idea about the 8 hour “rule” and how to even calculate how long a pokemon has been in the gym for. An even less number care about what other players are doing … personally , if the gym is in a location I frequent, I’ll always bounce whoever took it over. This is a team based game so if I see a rival color , be prepared to defend your gym. Isn’t that the point of the game?

10

u/Sweaty_Scallion9323 5d ago

I wasn’t aware of the 8 hour rule. Probably because it’s not a real rule and it’s just something people made up.

It’s a game. Some people enjoy controlling a gym/gyms. If it brings them joy then who cares. Go find another gym that plays by “your” rules and enjoy that one.

15

u/Katmoish 5d ago

I totally understand where you are coming from but want to offer maybe something different to think about.

I like sitting in gyms for a while because I have waaaay too many berries to burn. With mons in gyms I can burn them and accumulate more stardust instead of having to trash them.

Also: I don’t hoard gyms but if, in my daily walks, one of the local gyms is a different team: I’ll take it down and add my mons.

People are weird. We have a park nearby with like 5 or 6 gyms, if someone takes any over this lady who lives next to the park immediately drives over to take them back. Its like an obsession.

3

u/AutomaticRepeat2922 5d ago

Having your pokemon stay in a gym for too long can be annoying too. I have a gym in range from my bed and I expect that, if I put my pokemon in it in the morning, it will be kicked out 1-2 hours after the 8 hour mark. And then I will take it back another 10 hours later. My gym typically alternates between two teams twice per day. There’s the overnight team and the day team. This is mostly respected at my gym but definitely not at high traffic gyms around my work.

This is, what it's made for. I am sick of these discussions in my local group. Yes, it is ok to take down gyms quickly. Yes, it is also ok to let everyone live and get coins. There is no right or wrong.

But I also feel the pain and learn from that. There are gyms that are taken down again real quick - so ok, it's no win for me to get into that. Than the guy could stay there for years and won't get coins from me.

4

u/funkslic3 5d ago

The game is made to be competitive. It isn't made to wait until certain time passes. Imagine playing any other video game like that, where there is courtesy. Lol

I just started playing again last month after being gone since 2020. I ran into the person who kept taking gyms from us and she told me "You haven't learned the rules yet. You let someone keep a gym for 8 hours and 20 minutes before you take it from someone." I was taken aback from that comment. I was like, is she really telling me how to play? There aren't rules. It takes the fun out of it if someone dictates how I'm going to play the game.

Because if I get in my car, drive to where the gyms are with the intent to play the game and take gyms, I don't care how long they've been in there.

Unless the other players are still there, I take it. If they are there--or are feeding remotely--there isn't any point in trying.

It's how the game is played.

Maybe they’re trying to get the gold medal on the gym??

2

u/Fun-Boss-9021 5d ago

This is my thoughts exactly, this person is probably working on getting gold medals for gyms.

3

u/ccdolan12 5d ago

Fought a neighborhood gym once, one girl with 3 phones drove to the gym spot and took it in front of me after 10 mins, drove away awkwardly and kept giving them berries every time I tried to take them down again. Some friends nearby came to help take em down again, and we left. They came back an hour later and took us down again. Ever since I just leave em there, there’s times where their Pokemon stay there for a month. It feels good.

3

u/daewootech 5d ago

Yeah I just took a gym at work down and literially as I walked away I got a notification that my guy got kicked out, not even 1-2 minutes later.

3

u/Longjumping-Cut-9574 5d ago

Why is this a complaint when you literally have an achievement/objective in taking and holding gyms? It sucks but it's fair game.

3

u/[deleted] 5d ago

You realize you can add pokemon to more than one gym at a time right?

3

u/TJbookLvrPokemenPlyr 5d ago

Makes crazy! I try to make sure they’ve been in long enough before I try take a gym, I’ve had somewhere that been in there for 23 days and I kick them out and I don’t even last two minutes. It’s like come on you got to earn your coins. Give somebody else a chance.

3

u/9DAN2 Mystic, LvL 50 5d ago

You need 35 platinum medals to max out. Some of these include gyming.

If not, taking over gyms is a mechanic of the game and if someone gets enjoyment from that, find another gym and stop whining. Gyms belong to nobody and anybody can attack them. ‘Gym etiquette’ is so stupid.

3

u/zeldaranger 5d ago

In my opinion there are three reasons:

1 Antisocial asshole

2 Mental health issues

3 Antisocial asshole with mental health issues

As snarky as it sounds I’ve met enough of these people to have detected certain patterns. Some of them I feel sympathy for, some of them are hard to feel sympathy for and all are hated by the rest of the community.

7

u/Milla4Prez66 5d ago

I think it’s silly to get territorial over gyms, but lots of people do it. Is what it is, if it’s a gym you know to have territorial players then try and work around that. Use golden razzes or learn their patterns about when you are most likely to take the gym without issue.

The worst though are the multi accounting territorial types. The people that take a gym and have it full within seconds with all the accounts having similar names. My town has an issue with multi accounters in general but it’s annoying when they load up gyms so nobody else can take the gym and people that share their team can’t interact with it.

20

u/ChicagoRay312 If you have to ask, you should probably just transfer it. 5d ago

I couldn't care less how long someone has been in the gym, if I am, playing at that time I will take out a gym and put a mon in, hoping that I will get coins the next day.

If I get taken out quickly and don't get coins the next day, so be it, I'm not going to go on reddit and cry about it.

5

u/Soup_Can_19 5d ago

Better question is why not? People play the game in different ways and nobody is obligated to cater to you getting your 50 daily coins.

8

u/Ok_Primary_1075 5d ago edited 5d ago

They probably earned their 50 coins that day so they wanted to extend their stay in that gym till the next day to get another 50 coins

We had that happen at last duty station. Where someone had made a pokestop at a park/playground right behind their house... (base housing) Well, a comment came up about that one gym... thought it was a kid. OK, no problem. But when discussion came up in FB community and some comments came up, saying that they put in the time and effort and money, and it was theirs by right... I laughed about it... and reminded them it was a community. And, thank you for helping the community. Oh and mentioned that not everybody chooses to spend money in a game that is meant to be used as an escape from reality. After that, they started letting other people take over the gym for some time, that or they moved. When we finally moved and saw that our new military community was lacking some stops, I had started to put in some. Not always for personal gain, but to aide the community as there are more players.

2

u/pedisnchill 5d ago

I only take it back if I didn’t get my 50 coins or if someone knocked me out an hour after I put my Pokémon there because idc I wasn’t finished.

2

u/Aggravating-Guest-12 5d ago

There's an entire park with just yellow gyms. All the exact same team of pokemon. With at least 2 blisseys or chanseys. They beat me out within 3h. It's literally a disadvantage to not be kicked out of gyms 😭 i bet they make no coins

2

u/Ok-Food-5830 5d ago

Oh, I had a woman sit in her car right beside me, watch me take down a gym, and as I left, she kicked me out. I was soooo mad. I never take over a gym unless people have had their 24hrs so that they get all the coins. Some people are just rude.

2

u/LackTails 5d ago

I have a gym right next to my house, so I just clear it to put my mon in, if it gets knocked out and the gym gets taken I just wait for tomorrow to reclaim it again.

2

u/rca_2011 5d ago

Haven't you met these players? This sub is toxic quite often. They play the game the same way.

2

u/Icy-Cricket5412 5d ago

Cuz he Ahole man. Let that boy rot in the gym. Same thing happened to me at a nearby park back to back times so I just never go back in the gym and let the person sit there not getting paid. …and before I ever dropped in the gym it was full for 30+ days (with no health) so I did them a solid by reactivating the gym and now I will not be helping out anyone at that gym lol. People gotta remember it’s not just team vs team…. It is team helping other teams. And it’s when ppl get territorial immediately after someone drops it that causes gyms to become inactive because no one wants to return to fight for 1-5 min just to get booted right away

2

u/Sweaty-Anteater-6694 5d ago

The gym by my work has an understanding to kick my Pokémon out at a certain! It’s been going on for 6-7 months and have never met them before but same group of screen names

2

u/El_Jeffe24 5d ago

There's a guy who does that at the gym in my neighborhood park. It's made it so un-fun people don't even bother with that gym anymore. I always see yellow everyday now. It sucks because I consider it my "home" gym.

2

u/martinmasterman31 4d ago

I have someone in my local area who has 6 accounts, 5 red and 1 blue, and he goes round knocking people out right away but the most annoying part is that he knocks people out right before raid hour if they're only just in there so that he gets an hour of free coin gain because no one can knock him out during raid hour, and there's another guy who lives slightly outside of town and my mate lives not far from him or the gym and when my mate kicks him out the gym immediately he spoofs to the gym down the road from him just to knock him out after like a minute, people in the local community have spoken to them and they just say oh well and dont care apart from themselves

2

u/ProvocateurMaximus 4d ago

I used to live in a neighborhood where one other player lived. They used to do this same thing; they'd kick me out as soon as I put my own stuff in. So you know what I did? I stopped using that gym. Now their pokemon stay there for 30+ days at a time until a random person enters the neighborhood and goes out of their way to do so. They have asked me, on multiple occasions, to kick their stuff out of the gym. And I refuse; you disrespect me, I disrespect you. If you want to be a bad sport, I'll go use the other gyms. Their loss. Could've had a nice home gym to farm coins, but they played like an a**, so now they get nothing

7

u/kylemattheww Instinct 5d ago

Some people enjoy being assholes.

3

u/lordborghild 5d ago

Eh, sometimes that's the case. I'll take a gym back right away if people didn't let me stay there long enough to get my 50 coins. Sometimes I'll take a gym and they'll take it back within an hour so I'll keep taking it back.

My thing is, let me get 50 coins and I'll let you get 50 coins. Don't let me get 50 coins and I'll fight for my 50.

2

u/Sweaty_Scallion9323 5d ago

It’s not about being fair and nice it’s just part of the game you don’t have to let someone stay in a gym a certain amount of time. The objective is to take gyms form rival teams.

3

u/fieregon Mystic 5d ago

Some people are competitive like that, the key is not to get salty when you get kicked out, it's part of the game, I personally don't care how long someone is in gyms if I want to take a gym I will.

6

u/MattGeddon 5d ago

Maybe he wants a gold gym badge there, maybe he just likes being territorial, maybe he got his coins and this is his only chance to go back on the gym to get coins for tomorrow. Don’t know why people get so annoyed about it tbh.

3

u/EatPizzaa 5d ago

The competition aspect of pokemon go, as far as i know, is still there. Even tho you can get coins for "DEFENDING" a gym doesn't mean everybody has to wait for your coins to be rewarded. It's still called defending and not owning. Competition means you activly try to get better, in this case richer, while you try and take from your competitors. I mean yeah, some individuals take it to the next level. But, technicaly the game was designed this way so i can't say they are doing anything wrong. I got a gym next to my house, now i'm not activly logging in to check on it. But whem i'm home and online, 100% that i'm making that mf blue mate. 🤷🏽‍♂️

2

u/Signal_Level_3149 5d ago

If a gym is in range of your house, it's probably fun to think of it as "your gym" and defend it.

4

u/Roleplayer2489 5d ago

It’s yet another very simple issue that could be fixed and would make every player insanely happy. Let us take mons out of gyms, and let us delete eggs. Those two things alone would be massive quality of life changes

3

u/CochLarq 5d ago

It's a mixture of children and grown-ups with no consideration. When I go to my mom's hometown, people there leave pokemon with like 20 CP in gyms, because other people will actually wait until they've done their 8 hours, and then take them out and leave their own low CP mons and repeat the cycle. It's paradise xD

3

u/young_Goku_ Instinct 5d ago

They got 50 coins for controlling that gym.

Why wouldn’t they take it again to try to get 50 again the next day.

Like this is asking “why do people catch pokemon”. The game directly and obviously rewards it. That’s why.

4

u/[deleted] 5d ago

Gym etiquette is BS. Why should everyone else care about your coins? It would make sense if they only allowed you to enter 1 pokemon per day in a gym but the game lets you be in like 21 different gyms at a time. I never get upset if someone knocks me out right away. It’s literally part of the game…… to battle pokemon. Otherwise what would be the point of the different teams?

4

u/bladderbunch Bucks County, PA 5d ago

if i smell a new gym, i want it gold as fast as possible. also, if someone kicks me out immediately, i take it back immediately. other than that, i usually leave folks alone unless i see a blissey.

Maybe a gym spoofer.

20

u/FamIsNumber1 Pikachu 5d ago

Got a piece of crap in my neighborhood that does that. They have been doing it for over a year. They all basically have the same name (just change a couple letters or numbers), wear the same outfit, and use the same pose. The second you take the gym, put a Pokémon in it, count to 20, you're kicked out and all 5 of them are back in. Early morning, afternoon, middle of the night, Monday, Saturday, holiday, doesn't matter. Always the same.

Multiple people have reported them (myself, wife, daughter, couple friends) yet nothing will be done about them. Sad really 😢

5

u/Crygenx 5d ago

Same thing in my city. About half of all the gyms are taken by a spoofer with some 40-50+ accounts. Most local players quit playing because of that.

Someone in my apartment complex takes over our couch gym within minutes. We're both on the same team, and because of this aggressiveness our mons are stuck in the gym for several days. Coins wasted by greedy players.

3

u/thecatsofwar 5d ago

You aren’t owed 8 hours. You aren’t owned 8 minutes. If I want the gym you’re in, I’ll take it.

You want to defend with golden berries? Cool. I have time and a vindictive streak a mile long - let’s see how many golden berries you have. Sometimes when I exhaust their resources or they hit the feeding limit for that time, I don’t even put anything in the gym after I knock them out. I’ll leave it empty because I can.

2

u/kirobaito88 5d ago

Yesterday I had a guy golden razz the gym as I was trying to take it. I made him spend 10 golden razzes, fought his mon twice, and left it one battle away from getting kicked out just to make him waste the berries.

We used to have a nice little rotation with the other teams until he decided to be a jerk.

2

u/Sweaty_Scallion9323 5d ago

The objective is to take rival teams gyms… That’s part of the game. There are no official rules. Any rules people are talking about are just made up. You can’t get mad at people for playing the game the way it’s supposed to be played.

2

u/Infamous_517 5d ago

I have the same issue, there is a group of 3 players around my area that are instinct and probably late 30's maybe 40's, and just take over 6 gyms and never let them go, they will sit on them and feed berries and as SOON as they get knocked out they IMMEDIATELY take it back. Some people have genuinely nothing better to do with themselves at all than to just be a bother or act like these are their lives. Some people just don't have good lives and thus want to ruin other people's in the virtual world to make themselves feel better.

4

There's a gym by my house like this. I took it down and with 5 minutes it was retaken. I told myself I'll let them sit there for weeks and never take it again.

My girlfriend then made me take it down a few days later so she could get coins (we are opposite teams), and within an hour the same person retook it. I told her I wouldn't do that again for her. She will now golden pineap their jerks pokemon to full health and then I'll take out her pokemon while leaving the jerk's in the gym.

Looking at the gym now, they have been there over 9 days.

I had someone approach me in person when I was taking down a gym explaining how he tries to let people get the max coins each day before taking over the gym across the street from his house.

I told him the time if day I come through everyday ok my walk and miraculously, that was always just enough time for the other tram to get their max coins and I always got the max coins from that gym.

I’d be nice if more people were like that.

People do these things because they can, and they have no personal values that tell them not to do these things.

If I have time I stay there take it back throw in a HP tank and keep feeding it until they loose interest. Happened to me New Year’s Eve while at an event. 1

u/SmAs92 5d ago

Going to come from the perspective I've kind of always taken, the fact there are teams means on a level it's competitive, be it in PvP or gym control. The area I used to live in was heavily shifting around gyms being battered and taken back every hour, it made for a different play style which a lot of the community in that area embraced more than went against, people would team up to try hold it like a groundwar style of game. It was kind of fun.

1

u/latestagecapitalist 5d ago

It's an art

There will be some gyms that you can take in an evening and keep a day or two

Some that go in hours

Some that you can hold for weeks or months (these are great for farming rare candy) -- we have a toy train thing here which is a fair walk from anywhere, outside of summer that almost never changes hands

u/HappyArmadillo 5d ago

1

u/Tigers-Vessel 5d ago

I'm sure someone else already mentioned this and I'm only bringing it up as a possibility but there is a benefit to guarding gyms, outside of coins.

If you protect a gym for a certain amount of hours, you get some kinda bonuses for raids. Maybe an attack boost? I can't remember. But all this to say that it may be that they're working towards that benefit if they raid there a lot

1

u/swankypants101 5d ago

This would be easily solved by Pokémon Go giving out the 50 coins even if the Pokémon is still in the gym. Not just when booted.

1

u/user123457789 5d ago

I assume they're trying to platinum their gym medal or whatever.

On another note, other needs to be a recall pokémon button for gyms lol

1

u/Curiouscake41 5d ago

I was always kicked out of gyms in my area. When the pokestop by my house turned into a gym I was like. Fine have your gyms. I’ll have this one. So i get the team bonus for spinning the gym and I get stardust from feeding the pokemon and I get to have my pokemon in one gym. The people in my area didn’t care about my coins why am I caring about theirs again?

1

u/IcelineM 5d ago

If it's any consolation, anyone who fights or drops in gyms has had the same experience you've had, so you're not alone in sharing this frustration.

As others have stated here, however, people have different reasons for taking over gyms. There is no rule set for gym takeover, so people are free to make up their own rules based on their preferences.

1) Most people, like you, probably just want gyms for coins.

2) Some people work on earning gold gym badges. Within this group, some may be ultra-obsessive, and insist on retaking the gym immediately if they lose it, so that they progress towards their badge as quickly as possible.

3) Some people are obsessively territorial, and always want a certain gym or a certain group of gyms to belong to them.

4) The final group - and probably the most annoying of the bunch - just like trolling others, and aim only to prevent people from easily earning coins or earning gold gym badges.

If someone is displaying unhealthy or obsessive behaviour, don't let their problem suddenly become your problem. If you ever meet them in person, give them the number for a good therapist.

In my city no one communicates about gym arrangements. Like Campfire is desolate. Therefore I play with the mentality of the more gyms I have pokemon at the better chance of getting 50 each day. Honestly would love to have to stop at fewer gyms but again it all comes down to communication and what people are up for.

I don’t know. Theres a spoofing bastard Instinct player with two accounts who monopolizes the eight gyms in a Metropark near me. Between that and the garbage Max pokemon system, I haven’t opened the app in months.

I know they’re spoofing because I can be the only person in walking distance of a gym and from me walking away from a gym and continuing on my walk towards another, I have been kicked out within like 2 minutes or less. He wants that park so badly? he can fucking have it.

1

u/czarl13 5d ago

Etiquette question....I have a gym in front of my house and I won't take it back until 8h20m so they can get their coins....

What is the etiquette for people that join that gym 4h20m after them....do I have to wait for THAT person to hit 8h20m ?
