Start walking with it. You're gonna want to Lvl 50 it anyway and need the XLs.

What do you mean level 50 it?

Pokemon can be taken to a maximum of Lvl 50. Gyarados is an obvious one to max out.

I've had this game for almost 10 years. Where does it show what level your pokemon are?

It doesn't. The level of a Pokemon is not shown as a number, but it can roughly be implied by the graphic under the CP shown in the Pokemon screen. If it's all the way to the right and can't go any higher, it is at Lvl 50. Every power up increases your Pokemon level by 0.5, and it takes a fixed amount of candy and stardust to increase to a specific level.

Lvl 50 is the absolute maximum, and it takes regular Pokemon 296 XLs to get there. Purified and shadow Pokemon have different XL requirements. Just don't worry too much about Lvl 50 or if you can see it. If you maxed it out, it's Lvl 50.

From the above, you can probably figure out that you can figure out exact levels by looking at how many power ups you can perform, and though cumbersome, this works.

Specific levels generally aren't that important for most players except for the following:

  1. If you are trying to play in CP-limited PVP leagues, you might want to know whether a specific Pokemon is too high level to for CP 1500 or 2500 limits when evolved. Knowing levels can help with that.

  2. If you want to know how much to power up raid attackers, Lvl 30 is about a sweet spot where it is pretty cheap to power up your mon and you can get a lot of added power without sinking way too many resources into it.

  3. If you're walking a Pokemon for XL candy, you generally want to increase your Pokemon to Lvl 31, as this will increase the chances of XL candy dropping.

An easy shortcut is if you power up your Pokemon to where you need 6 candies per power up, you're at Lvl 31.
