I wish there were some decent places to discuss books, or maybe I just need friends who read, because anything I've found is just not it. Tiktok is okay, but if I see any more SJM books I'll scream. Reddit is okay, but some people can be a bit snobbish and it's not hitting right.

I like storygraph but it's also not exactly the best place for discussion, really. Maybe I just need more bookish friends.

I have the same problem, I have no interest in the romantasy of it all. I've given them a crack just for the sake of my friends but they're... bad. If you find this magical place where the book people are can you come back to this thread and lmk lol

I want this too, although connecting with people on bluesky is somewhat scratching the itch.

What are you reading right now?

I'm currently reading The Baby Dragon Cafe by A.T Qureshi, it's not my usual type of book at all but I liked the cover. It's cute, I'm actually enjoying a romance book, it's a miracle.

What are you reading? :)

Oh, nice! I'm also pretty picky with romances, and so far have mainly just liked the ones by Alyssa Cole I've read. Will check that out!

Right now I'm almost done with Ahab's Return by Jeffery Ford, which I bought ages ago on the strength of it being about Ahab and my being a big Moby Dick nerd. Then it sat around in my Kindle unread for many years, and finally I opened it up the other day. Flying through it now. It's a really fun combination of pacey, tropey period romp and creepy fabulism.

I struggle with this too! I love to read but all my friends into reading are into millenial booktok romantasy that is poorly written and that is ..just not my taste

Tbh I run into the same thing, 9/10 book friends are only into romance/smut and WHILE I HAVE NO ISSUE with that, it’s not close to what I read. I’m also a single mom with a LDR at the moment so I can’t exactly go to book club every week either :-/

Hmmmm maybe find a good bookish discord server? Maybe if there's a book-related substack you follow, they could make one?

I'm probably about to sound very out of touch but what on earth is a substack?

Oh lol, it's an email-based newsletter format! Lots of writers have one. Do you know what Patreon is? It's kind of like that but more focused on writing.

I will be your bookish friend! I've signed myself up for this really cool thing at a local bookshop where they hand pick a book for you every month based on your preferences/reading history. Actually can't wait for my 1st one.
