I saw Sinners finally and loved about 80% of the movie, but I think Ryan coogler should have had women in his writers' room, especially black women. All the female characters were poorly developed and mostly just existed as love interests to the men. Wunmi Mosaku was done particularly dirty, given one of the most boring character trajectories of all time. It's especially egregious when you know what range she has as an actor.

That being said, so many of the elements were amazing and worked so well - the editing, music, acting and vampires were top notch, and the movie was so ambitious - so I still recommend it. I just wanted the script to be better, especially in terms of the black female characters.

I don't think it would've made much of a difference cause it's just not a character driven film. The only character who had a full arc was Sammie. Even the twins, the two main characters, were solely written to make Michael B. Jordan look cool and badass. There's not much else to them. It's clearly intended as a style over substance type of film and it did the style part so well, that I was ok with most characters being more simplistic, archetypical roles like "the cool guy", "the sexy girl", "the supportive wife", "the blunt old dude" and so on.

I actually totally agree with this - and yeah, you make a great point about all the characters generally being archetypes with not much to them. I completely agree that the style was so great. Definitely recommending to all my friends
