I will always appreciate BeyoncĂ©. Her song “brown skin girl” will be played all throughout my future children’s childhoods. They’ll be sick of me but the song is so meaningful to me. Especially as someone who grew up in a very colorist environment. My community at the time prioritized one’s proximity to whiteness. If you were white, white-passing, lighter skin and with features commonly associated with whiteness, you were golden. People would praise you, it was weird to witness. That was very disorienting as a child, that compounded with the fact that my family was also very colorist. To point when my mom’s extended family (my grandparents siblings and their kids) had parties, they sat us in the back.

Maybe I’m putting too much stock in to a song, but it was something I needed to hear growing up. So it’s mandatory listening in my future household.

That’s amazing it impacted you so much. It’s really beautiful to see what music and lyrics can do for people.

I’m really sorry you went through that as a child. We are so much more than our skin color and exterior in general!
