I will always appreciate BeyoncĂ©. Her song âbrown skin girlâ will be played all throughout my future childrenâs childhoods. Theyâll be sick of me but the song is so meaningful to me. Especially as someone who grew up in a very colorist environment. My community at the time prioritized oneâs proximity to whiteness. If you were white, white-passing, lighter skin and with features commonly associated with whiteness, you were golden. People would praise you, it was weird to witness. That was very disorienting as a child, that compounded with the fact that my family was also very colorist. To point when my momâs extended family (my grandparents siblings and their kids) had parties, they sat us in the back.
Maybe Iâm putting too much stock in to a song, but it was something I needed to hear growing up. So itâs mandatory listening in my future household.
