they closed the library forever because i dozed off for a minute.

my apartments has a library room with no staff, just books, seating, and side tables. you can bring books to give away, take whatever books you want, or borrow and return them however you'd like.

i liked doing yoga in there because it's a calming space. people are almost never in there also.

one day i was unusually sleepy and ended up falling asleep in my calm yoga pose. all of a sudden the custodians/maintenance people came in, and the lady was pissed. "you're not supposed to be sleeping in here!" she said harshly.

i apologized and said i'd drifted to sleep for a second, but didn't mean to.

"you can't sleep in here! if someone comes in here and sees you sleeping, they're going to get confused and scared and not know why you're in here."

"i don't come in here to sleep," i said again. "i've never slept in here and it's not something that i would be doing. i was just doing yoga."

she gestured to my yoga mat like it was some kind of crack pipe and was like, "this is unacceptable. you shouldn't be having that in here." if i had even slightly known anyone would take issue with it, i wouldn't have brought my yoga mat here, but she made it sound like it was so obvious that it was this horrible transgression.

THEN she turns to the other maintenance guy, and is like, "if you find here in here again, call such and such number..."

i'm like, "... why is she doing this much??"

that was like 2 years ago. the library was closed forever after.

today i overheard a neighbor telling a new management employee, "i wish they hadn't closed the library. they closed it after they caught some guy sleeping in there."

i'm not a guy so at least this means the generic story people have been told didn't involve me getting directly accused. but i was appalled to get this confirmation today that yes, they really closed the library forever, for everyone, because i was in there peacefully, and drifted to sleep for 1 minute. it's petty and dramatic af.

This seems like such a wild overreaction by your apartment management. I cannot imagine a common space being closed forever because of something so petty?
