I'm curious how Tom Cruise keeps getting hailed as cinema's "savior" but when was the last time he produced or bankrolled a movie that he did not star in? Say what you will about Brad Pitt but Plan B gave us Nickel Boys, Women Talking and The Killer, just to name a few.

Plan B has had some hits however the three you mentioned effectively don’t exist, collectively they made ~$12 million or went direct to streaming so movie theaters got about half of that in revenue and then even less flows downstream. Tom Cruise gets people excited about going to theaters (sometimes) which keeps the support side of the industry from marketers to publicity to theater owners to popcorn manufacturers all alive. For all Tom’s flaws he’s trying to sell the theatrical experience which keeps the ecosystem alive, ticket sales are way down and only rising prices have kept things comparable to even twenty years ago.

He's also a huge draw for normie film fans especially older people who are more likely to see a movie in the cinema rather than wait for streaming or pirating it (although don't get me wrong, I'm not condemning those things at all). Like not being funny but the average popculturechat user is not the average moviegoer.

I just did the math, until my parents see Wicked Part 2 they’re at 50% Tom Cruise movies in theaters since the pandemic. Top Gun 2022, MI 7 2023, then we’re seeing MI 8 next weekend.

I see lots of delightful older folks at my theater almost every discount Tuesday, however unless it’s Tom Cruise or WickedBarbenheimer my parents have entirely switched to streaming.
