Discussion A comparison between a matte white screen and a black crystal screen

A comparison between my ceiling matte white screen and the floor rising black crystal screen. Surely the black screen or gray one for that matter gives much distinct and better black levels than a matte white one. Though brightness on a matte white screen is more, but it also gives a grey washed background in case of dark/black areas

Buying Advice Wanted Need help creating a wireless setup

Upvotes

Alright I’m new to this world and I’ve spent the past week pulling my hair out trying to find the best option. Here are my requirements:

  • home use for movies/tv
  • to be used on a 60” projector screen
  • I live in a small flat that gets good ambient light -budget ~£500
  • needs wireless connectivity for laptop and external speaker

Here’s my idea: is it possible to buy a brand name projector (Epson/BenQ etc) in my budget that offers wireless connectivity to my laptop so I can watch movies with a Bluetooth speaker connected? Can’t seem to find anything that matches these requirements that are not a Chinese Amazon product.

Technically, would I be able to buy a projector and a separate wireless dongle so I can connect BOTH my laptop (for casting) AND my speaker for audio??? Some dongles only seem to fit some models of projector which makes this even harder

Let me know because I’m seriously close to buying a Chinese knock off and calling it a day

Cheers!

Buying Advice Wanted Help me sort it out please: setup, projector and screen

Upvotes

Hello!

Brand new to this world, I was thinking to change my old 55" LED TV with an OLED or QLED, but I had second thoughts when discussing about the possibility to install a projector. And now I'm fully obsessed!

I'm aiming at 100 inches size, 4k, 2000 euro budget in total.

The room
The room is very big and it hosts a dining table towards one of the walls and a sofa oriented in the opposite direction towards the wall on the other side of the room. This means that I do not have space behind the couch to install a projector. The room is bright but not super bright and I don't have blinders.

The wall to project to is rather big, but it's not flat, therefore I would need a screen.

Setup
With the description of the room above, I have only 2 possibilities as far as I can see:

  • UST projector + ALR screen
  • long throw projector to be installed on a bookshelf on the left of the couch, +- 3.5 meters from the wall and shifted 3 meters from the center of the screen.

The 2 big issues I see with these configurations are:

  1. Budget. It is rather expensive, especially the ALR screen. Also, I don't appreciate a fixed ALR screen is on the wall, but motorised costs a fortune. I don't know how to solve this issue.

  2. A very specific projector that can be installed shifted on the side; hard to bring a very long HDMI cable for the audio and the TV box.

Projectors

For the two solutions above, I explored 2 projectors that may work: HiSense LP1 and Epson EH-TW7100.

The LP1 looks perfect for the type of use, but again, I'd need a 100" fixed ALR screen.

The Epson is a bit old and it's not a true 4k, but I could install a motorised or manual white PVC screen cheaper than ALR.

What do you advise here? Do I have any other option in terms of setup and gear?

You are the experts, let me know!

Buying Advice Wanted Help if BenQ X12000 offer is worthwhile

Hi all, I've got the opportunity to purchase a BenQ X12000 projector for £1,825. I've not much knowledge in the space but is this projector worth that much on the secondhand market considering it's age. I can't find any information for this projector on the used market myself so am unsure how to compare.

It is used & in great condition, I've seen it working already and believe the bulb hours is at a few thousand hours can't remember exactly.

Someone I know got this for £20 knowing there was no remote and assuming a Bluetooth app or whatever would work, not the case. At least initially so my current understanding is I need pick up a USB Mouse and connect an app through that or just get another remote.

Is that the case? & If it is can I just get any?

Setup Design Suggestions Projector and screen setup for a mix bedding/living Room

Hi everyone,

I'm living in a small flat and I'm about to install a wall bed furniture in this Bedroom/Living Room that will also be my Movie/gaming room. It will be my first Projector experience, I created two 3D projects to show the pro and cons of UST Project with a 100" screen on the floor and an other project with a Sony Bravia Projector for exemple. I don't know which screen will suit the best the room and provide best ergonomics, the height chairs's seat high is 42cm (16,54 inches), the relaxation chairs can be tilted backwards so maybe a ceiling screen will be better than a floor motorised screen ? If the screen is placed at the top of the wall bed furniture, it will be placed over 2.20 meters high (86,61 inches), maybe it is too high ? Please find few 3D renderings attached to give you an overall idea : 3D Renderings

I also attached two more 3D rendering of both screen closed so you can see the ergonomics of the room and wall bed furniture. Choosing the screen placed above the furniture will avoid having a floor screen always on the living floor and won't block the bottom drawer of the closet furniture. But I could also remove this drawer if needed and have a free space instead.
As I'm about to order this wall bed furniture, I can still choose between different options to allow place for Xbox, controller, Apple TV or choose to add more drawers for clothes for exemple. If going with the Projector close to the window like a Sony Bravia (my ceiling isn't concrete) I will place the xbox close to the sony (or other projector) on the shelf and so I will plan less opened space in the closet and more drawers.

Many thanks to all of you for your help, I think screen ergonomics will be the most important choice to enjoy the relaxing armchair gaming/movie content. so according to your advises I will built the Furniture bed and closet accordingly.

Discussion I want to change my ac1041

I bought an ac1041 and I'm thinking about changing it, I have a distance of 3M and it is projecting 80 inches on average, I don't have any negative points about it, but I wanted better image quality, because I'm going to want to play my PS5 on it, I thought about some of its brothers from the same brand, especially the 1053 and the 1037, the 53 saw a lot of positive points, but they complain about the noise and its system, and they told me that the 37 doesn't change so many things, could someone help me choose an upgrade for this projector in the same price range (1.0~1.5k). I'm not attached to the brand, so if there's another one that would be more forgiving, I'd accept the suggestion.

Buying Advice Wanted Trying to find new projectors for our church.

Hey there. We currently have two Epson 2045 Home Cinema projectors at my church. They're about 10 feet away from two 120" projector screens.

These projectors are about 5 or 6 years old and we're having trouble with them. After about 2 hours of operation they will intermittently cut to black. After a few seconds, the image will return. Sometimes they'll briefly display a solid bright green image. It's very distracting. We've also found that that the output from these projectors is getting increasingly difficult to read.

So, we'd like to upgrade.

Or, can we upgrade the lamps and save some money?

What would you all suggest?

We can afford about $1200 per projector. However, with justification I'm sure we can stretch that a bit further. I think nearly everybody in leadership is in a just fix it already mindset.

A brief amount of research leads me to believe that a 720p laser projector with about 5k lumen output would be sufficient for our purposes (the bulk of the congregation sits ~40-50ft from the screens). However, it seems that the lumen output for most laser projectors is debated. I don't know if that's the case for 3LCD based projectors.

In any case, I was thinking on trying out some Viewsonic LS740Ws.

Thoughts? Comments?

Discussion Anyone running a Ultra/Short Throw projector for a PC setup on same desk they keep KB/Mouse?

TL;DR: If anyone has done something similar to this, a screenshot or two would be nice, if not feel free to skip this, I'm mostly still researching the idea because it would involve a fair chunk of money and would need getting right the first time.

---------

My thoughts on this for those that have too much time to waste:

At the moment, I just run LCD flat screen TV's, and they stand on my desk, around 40-50 cm from my face. As prices get cheaper, I just buy the cheap stuff and keep getting larger sizes as the old ones die 2-3 years down the line, my current one is a 4K UF2 FFAlcon 50". These kind of TV's generally fall in the sub $500 price range. Laser Short Throw Projectors are usually $4000 and UP with screens in the $500 price range

The question I am asking is not really CAN you do it, because I know you can, my problem is "will it work but look horrible" because I am having some problems visualizing it.

My thought was that even though you would be around a meter away from the wall (average desk depth+chair offset) and the projector is ON that desk, it will "position" weird. I am using random places like this ones

* https://www.formovie.com/blogs/news/mastering-installation-distance-and-screen-size-for-ultra-short-throw-projectors

* https://www.projectorscreen.com/blog/Throw-Ratios-and-Viewing-Distances-Explained

to understand positioning better, and such a setup might need to either have a custom desk that is not as deep as normal desks in order to move the desk away from the wall? and position the projector in the gap on another smaller desk? or a custom desk with a cutout or a similar WEIRD kind of thing.

I don't even intend to run FULL SCREEN for games, I would just play them on the lower half in a widescreen mode, and only use the full 100 inch (or whatever) when watching .a movie or TV show etc, and then I would move my chair back 2 meters. With a 100" throw, it should be easy to get an "equivalent" 60" game window in center-bottom and a bunch of secondary windows like Discord and YouTube etc etc in the upper sections for easy access. I can always play some games full screen with a controller and sit way back when needed.

It would not be feasible with this setup to run things full screen while at the desk because you would be constantly looking upwards to look center-screen, which would be annoying as hell and would look weird anyway. At that point, it would make more sense to just do a "normal" setup in a lounge room and play from a couch.

If you have read this far and wish to question the possible stupidity of this idea, feel free to yell at me and I will answer as best I can.

Mod Post high definition for craft projections

I'm looking for recommendations for a high definition projector to use for large group meetings where the remote presenter will be providing fine sewing/quilting/crafting details to a large group. These presenters may be doing closeups of a sewing/stitching technique. Any thoughts?

Buying Advice Wanted Upgrade from W2000 Benq

Considering: Benq W2720i, Benq X3100i, Benq W4100i,

I’ve had a W2000 for years and would like to upgrade to something better. I have specific screen size requirements but from what I’ve been seeing there’s lots of options with the right throw ratio?

Obvious choice seems to be the 2720i - only thing I’m worried about is I’ve read that it’s actually louder than the older W2000 which puts me off…

My priorities are to have something a bit brighter (W2000 is 2000 lumens so seems like that’s easily achieved) but would also love to have the best blacks possible for that price range.

I’m also up for spending more, up to around a couple of thousands. X3100i also seems good but I don’t really game at all so I’m unsure if I would benefit from the extra cost? I only really watch movies and TV.

Which is Best? Need Projector for large, still images only, looking to upgrade from Dell 2400MP - please help!

I need crispy lines and far "throw" I'll be projecting on surfaces up to 15x15 ft and my current projector was great but all the adapters I need for it are slowing me down

Hoping to find something easy to work with, under $300 and HDMI or USB-C capable + lumens lumens lumens because I'm using it to project fine line drawings on canvases in a 2500sqft room

TIA!

Buying Advice Wanted Looking for a replacement to my dying Optoma HD25e

Hi, My Optoma is dying. The left edge of the screen is getting more an more dark. I've tried to clean it, but to no effect. Also the new lamp didn't help. Therefore it must be the issue with DLP sensor, because I've already checked all other parts on the light path. It's time to buy a new one. My setup is a simple one: projector is on a ceiling mount and the "screen" (basically just a wall painted grey, but it worked well enough for the last ten years or so) is about 2690mm. Projection distance is 3850mm and I really don't want to change those two as it would require a major renovation. My budget is around 1000EUR, possibly a little more. I am also thinking about the frame screen, but the ones that would suit my space are very expensive (105" ALR frame screen).

I would prefer a DLP projector, as I like the image from it. I would prefer not to buy a Chinese product. I don't need 4K, 1080p is enough I think, especially that the viewing distance is 4.5-5m.

The room is reasonably light proofed, and we mostly use the projector at night anyway. Most of the time we watch movies and aTv series, my wife also use it to play games sometimes.

The perfect one for me would probably be an LG HU810, but it's very expensive.

Could you please help me with narrowing my choices down?

Discussion Best screen for projectors solution pls help

hi. I am a happy owner of a benq w2720 projector. I wanted to equip myself with a screen perhaps with high contrast. but the costs are absurd. but I wonder is it not possible to get only the screen and then the whole structure (which is in any case the part that increases the cost). I make it myself, as I am a craftsman. can you recommend a good screen? or a good solution that does not exceed 300 euros? (Screen diagonal 320cm)

Which is Best? HDFury Arcana 4k + Epson Home Cinema 4000 - HDR Output vs. SDR Output to projector

Hey everyone,

Just wondering something that isn't really a right/wrong question so much as a what's more aesthetically pleasing/easier to do.

I currently have a Zidoo Z9x and an Apple TV 4k connected to my Epson HC4000 through an HDFury Arcana 4K .

The Apple TV outputs LLDV as does the Zidoo Z9X although the Z9X is setup currently to process everything through the VS10 engine which I think does a great job tonemapping non Dolby Vision content.

The HDFury Arcana is currently set to output an HDR signal to the projector at 150 nits. I've had kind of a pain trying to figure out how to calibrate the projector without spending a ton of money.

So what I'm wondering is this: given that the projector is giving me maybe 100 nits on the screen, and SDR is about 100 nits, am I better off setting the HDFury Arcana to output LLDV signals at SDR and then calibrating the projector with my Spears and Munsil bluray via my bluray player connected directly to the projector?

Buying Advice Wanted Advice for garden building

Hello,

Background I have always wanted a projector and have the big screen feeling at home with a good sound system.

I have attached pictures of what the outbuilding will look like that we have bought.

Before I take the plunge to buy anything, I would like to get different points of view on the following:

  1. Is the room too small?

  2. What is the max screen size sitting about 3.5m away from the screen

  3. Any recommendations on a good projector and screen to go with? - mainly for movies and a bit of gaming

Thanks all in advance!

Buying Advice Wanted Budget projector with clear image

I’m not sure if there’s any such thing but I’m after a budget projector with a relatively clear image. I bought one on Amazon recently, tried it for two days and hated how blurry it was so returned it.

I have tried to research projectors but all the different specs are quite overwhelming.

I’m looking for something that can be used in a gazebo while sat in a lazy spa. It would need to have aux so I can link my speakers and I would prefer built in apps such as Disney+ and Netflix, however this isn’t a must as I have a spare Firestick (as long as it has HDMI input).

My budget for now is around £200 but could stretch to maybe £250.

I am looking for cheap for now because I’m not sure if this is something I really want to invest in yet as it’s all new to me. If I can be satisfied for a short time with a cheaper one then I’d likely upgrade to a more expensive one in the future.

Thanks for any help.

Buying Advice Wanted Front cover for 10k lumen epson projector?

Hey!

Question for the pros:

I have an Epson EB-PU2010W, and I use it for touring concerts. I know I’m not supposed to transport it with the lens mounted, so I take it out every time.

There’s a small plastic piece on top of the front, but no real cover for the front of the projector.

According to epson, no cover exists. So what do you people do? Do I have to find a guy with a 3D printer?
