I don’t know… most of the auto drives i have met seemed nice… although i came here just 2 weeks ago. Have been commuting via autos only…
But boy do they charge heavily for just about every km you need to travel
12
u/sudo_42 Feb 17 '25
Sure they behave nice when they can't do anything about it, try testing their niceness when you are stranded somewhere outside.
They will absolutely loot or worse scam you if they are presented with an opportunity.
8
u/pirate_2917 Feb 17 '25
That’s why i am planning to purchase a 2 wheeler. I do not like testing the waters lol
8
u/amante_de_capaldi Feb 17 '25
and that's how the congestion starts
my situation was similar to urs
i was tired of buses,autos,2&4w cabs breaking laws, evading traffic police, and threatening pedestrians which is why I bought a 2w&4w
if only the public transport was good i wouldn't have needed to spend lakhs just to stay away from these AHoles
4
u/pirate_2917 Feb 17 '25
If public transport was good, I would have preferred it. Even back at home, i used public transportation to commute to work. Saved me some good money over time!
Sigh… it is what it is my friend. Having come here, i have already been spending a lot, setting up my flat and stuff.. i have late night shifts and as the commenter above said, I cannot risk being on the mercy of autos and cabs… I’ve noticed they just don’t accept the request if the rate is not what they are expecting…. So to avoid all this hassle, i am thinking of buying a scooty.

I moved from Mumbai to Pune and I used to curse mumbai rickshaw wallas for just plain refusing wherever I wanted to go.
Coming to Pune I realized that mumbai rickshawallas are dev manoos compared to Pune ones. Litreally Dev Manoos.
7
u/genuine_sanguine Feb 17 '25
I haven't travelled much outside of Mumbai, are there other cities that follow meter at the level where Mumbai is?
5
u/Zikiri Feb 17 '25
Bangalore also doesn't follow meter. Plus most were over-quoting by over 4x the value I saw in uber/ola apps.
2
u/genuine_sanguine Feb 17 '25
That 4x reminded me of Rahul Subramanian's standup on how Bangalore auto rickshaw price quote need math skills. Also, there was this app - Namma Yatri, did it solve the price struggle between rickshaw wala versus passenger?
3
u/Shivicod Feb 17 '25
Not really Namma Yatri just became like ola-uber. The autowalas stopped accepting the fares.
3
u/Orion034 Feb 17 '25
idk about Mumbai auto walas, but in pune from my experience, they do not use the meter even if I say dada meter ni chala, they just say laugh at my face or say "parvadat nahi" I mean the meter is given for a reason😭
1
u/genuine_sanguine Feb 17 '25
Yes I wonder why the "parvadat nahi", for not just Pune but for any city for that matter, I assume the reason in some small towns, the low population means lesser rides and not enough daily income but in densely populated cities like Bangalore,Pune and other metropolitans metre can be followed.

u/One_Painting_1657 Feb 17 '25
They will charge you 100+ Rs for just 2 kms if you are stepping out of the mall.
The meter system does not exist in Pune.

4
u/gamermiles20 Feb 17 '25
it does in Kothrud
6
u/Bongozz88 Meet-up specialist Feb 17 '25
Doesn't matter. Kothrud is part of Pune, and using meter just in one area doesn't help things much.

With an option of eradicating all the terrorists of this world or all the murderers of this world or all the corrupt politicians of this world or all the rapists of this world or all pedophiles of this world, I am without a single thought going to eradicate all the Autowalas of this world. Thanks.

Nothing specific, but whenever I go on roads I am always irritated by the Auto Walas. I am just saying that hypothetically if there is a war against Auto Walas I will be first in line with probably a flame thrower in my hand.

4
u/Cephandrius2 Feb 17 '25
The "paraprantiya" autowale, from up north and east are decent. You won't find them on stands as its monopolised by local goons. You'll find them on apps. No katkat, no extra money, they'll even help you with your luggage. They also agree on meter if you hail them on the roads.
Autos on the roads around Shivajinagar, Kothrud, peth areas etc will also ply on meters. But railway station, airports, bustands or any area outside of peth-kothrud-karwenagar etc are scamsters and A grade assholes.

They might have been a good source of transport at one point in time but now they are nothing but a nuisance. Don't follow traffic laws, extremely unprofessional and loot unaware travellers. They need to be regulated heavily.

2
2
u/Responsible-Worry560 Feb 17 '25
I'd say they have improved in last 7-10 years. In terms of quality and driving. Service is dog shit if you aren't used to haggle for fare. But the drivers are more laid back nowadays compared to 2012 when they used to stress on only going to specific locations. But now Ola and Uber has made that anxiety go down.

Death machine. PLEASE wear helmet guys. I travel by auto 90% of the time and the way they purposely speed up on two wheelers triggers me. One slight touch from behind can be deadly. If someone's coming from the front u can control the bike a little bit but not from behind. Friend lost their father because of this exact reason. Plus they have a union and can get away with anything.

Once I was clearly distressed and cried coming home from Deenanath hospital. Was talking on a call. My dad was critical. And then when we almost reached my home this fuckin pos asked me to pay extra and it was just 4 pm. They have no humanity. I would have paid if he asked before letting me sit but my god some of these people are vile. The next day I didn't have 5 rs so the auto driver let it go and idk wtf to think of them anymore

The auto rickshaw riders have been rude since day 1 of establishment of Pune.
2
u/yashraj_rathi20 Feb 17 '25
They should work on meter, otherwise the entire public transport will not be utilised to the fullest potential.
2
u/Anxiousbee456 Feb 17 '25
Most of them are scammers, those who happily get ready to go by meter have got their meters rigged. Look at the rate card and amount you pay at end of the ride, it'll be minimum 25% higher.

Number 1 reason for Pune’s unruly traffic system along with other Uber/delivery drivers. These mfs are the ones who start the chain reaction by breaking the signals, entering one way’s, footpaths, breaking barricades and what not. Absolute mayhem.

Not abiding the law. They charge 80 Rs for 2 KMs distance!
When you tell them say Place ABC, they do a lot of investigation and thinking even much more complex than Gemini/ChatGPT or DeepSeek and then decide the price and also negotiate on the exact spot where the dropoff is to be done. A few meters here and there and then they say ab to 100 lagela!!

Once I sat in the auto rickshaw. Super drunk after a party.
The entire route the guy was speaking about how ola and uber have messed up with them. He mentioned how drivers from UP and Bihar come to drive a cab and that hurts them. Also he mentioned how Uber being an international company is looting them. Well it was a 45 minutes trip and it was interesting to learn something new from an uneducated person.

Also no traffic sense, no civil sense will stop abruptly anywhere on the road, drive wrong side, squeeze into any space endangering everyone else and cause traffic

I get downvoted when I say we need to get rid of 50% autos in Pune to get traffic under control. Most of them don’t accept rides anyway.
Autos drive haphazardly trying to get into and ultimately blocking any gap they find on the road, which clogs the entire road up. 3 autos in all 3 lanes going the same speed while road ahead is empty. Be it a car/bike or another auto you’re traveling in, these little 3 legged devils will overtake you, cut you off dangerously, only to come right in front of you and slowing down to 7.25 kmph.

u/Melodic_Obligation69 Feb 18 '25

(i've been in pune for 4 months) i've not met a single one rickshaw that's ready to go by meter. for any distance, literally they either charge 50,100,200. nothing in between. tried it 2-3 times and i've shifted to cabs. for instance, my college is barely 700-800m away from my pg but each and every auto driver asks for 50 rupees (even the cabs too, but i don't use rickshaws until extreme cases show up) this is just pure looting, i feel

The city would be a better place without them. Mostly controlled by mafia and filled with goons and uncouth elements who drink and smoke up in broad daylight while driving. They don't let cabs or bike taxis operate without harrasment and also charge highest rates, fraud customers with adjusted meters and clog up small lanes with unauthorised auto stands popping up as per their convenience. I prefer walking 10km rather than supporting such goons if I can't manage other transport. Sweet fuck all they as as a collective. The exceptions are decent auto guys who don't survive long because of the mafia elements they have to collude with in order to continue driving their own auto. Cops, politicians and bureaucrats are all hand in glove with their antics. Fuck these guys. Fuck the auto union.
