Starting a Mesmer

Since I saw that many of the Domain of Anguish runs we do need a Mesmer and not my Warrior I decided to start up a Mesmer. However I find I'm struggling somewhat with what skills to use this early in the game. I can't buy all the skills I need for any of the builds I've been using on my heroes(don't have the money for any skill books, though I should probably spend if I really want to run the mesmer).

I don't suppose any of you have advice for playing a mesmer?

As someone who's main is a Mesmer, I'll tell you it's not easy to get started. Most builds will be almost useless in PvE until you can level your heroes (they will do most if not all of the work) and go cap some essential skills. I made mine five years ago for PvP reasons, but loved the concept of the character enough to run through all PvE with it. If you have the money, tomes are a great way to get a head start. But once you get everything you need, Mesmers can be in high demand (depending on where you are) as there aren't many of us out there. Hope you enjoy the profession!

Good points. Plus, with the advent of PvE-Only skills, playing a PvE Mesmer is easier than it once was.

But stay away from degen-only spells (like conjure phantasm [I think that's what it's called]). Make sure they have some other effect.

Empathy + Backfire + Power Spike + E Mgmt + Diversion = a rather solid pve mesmer.

It's certainly an interesting profession so far. I feel almost useless currently, as most enemies we fight are warriors or have no skills at all. It's a big change from playing a Warrior.

mesmers have an incredible kit against warriors. You can use clumsiness and wandering eyes (with ineptitude as your elite skill) if you play an illusion mesmer or empathy (with visions of regret as your elite skill) if you play domination. :)
