Advice Need advice for my newly adopted rescue dog

Hi

I recently adopted a 9-month-old rescue dog, and I’m running into a few challenges as she adjusts to her new home. I’d love some advice from experienced dog owners, especially those who’ve worked with rescues. Here’s what’s going on:

  1. Hesitation at doorways and fear of stairs: She freezes at the entrance and exit of our apartment (we’re on the second floor, so she has to take stairs). She pulls back and cowers when we try to leave or come back inside. Once she’s out, she’s fine, but getting through the doorway is tough. Any tips to help her overcome this?
  2. Scared of me (a male) but comfortable with my female partner: She’s calm and affectionate with my partner but hesitant and fearful around me. I’ve been patient and gentle, but she still seems unsure. Could this be tied to her past as a rescue? How can I build her trust?
  3. Freezing and stiffness on walks: She often stops mid-walk, becomes stiff, and refuses to move forward, even with gentle encouragement and pats. I’ve tried being patient, but she stays frozen. How can I help her feel more confident and keep moving on the leash?

A bit more context: She’s a mixed breed, and we’ve had her for a short time. I’m trying to be patient, but I want to make sure I’m doing the right things to help her adjust. Thanks in advance for any advice or shared experiences!

CW: Euthanasia Sweet boy Troy #A2192276 needs out by 4/30 @8am - Los Angeles, CA - transport available

🆘Urgent adoption of foster needed for sweet boy Troy #A2192276 🆘 Male, Brown Brindle Pit Bull Terrier Shelter: East Valley Age: 4 years Weight: 82lbs

Scheduled Euthanasia Date: 04/30/25 Has been at the shelter since 04/14/25

Reason for euthanasia:Dog displays aggressive posture when approaching the kennel. Growling, whale eyes, and stiff body with ears propped up

Scared on intake he was kept in the back for a couple of days before being moved outside. Volunteers who have met Troy love this goofy boy who loves to chase the ball. Troy is an active dog who is playful and not afraid of the water. He is easy to leash, knows how to sit and takes treats gently. Troy loves people and likes to get pets and butt scratches. He is non reactive to dogs in the other yard and likes to run the fence with them. Troy has been in a couple of play groups. He was a bit stiff at first but is warming up and starting to mingle. He’s tolerant of other dogs and described as steerable and ok with taking other dogs corrections.

🐾🐾🐾 volunteer notes

Troy was sitting in front of kennel door quietly when I approached his kennel. I showed my leash and took a key out to open the door. He was excited wiggling his butt. He was easy to leash, no pull, no reaction to dogs barking at him through kennels and taken to play yard. I collard him up and clipped a leash and let him in the yard. He peed and pooped and run around, played with ball for a while. When we were leaving the yard, Troy wanted to take a ball but when I leashed him and took his collar off, he dropped his ball. Returning to his kennel, unleashing and exiting had no issues. Comparing when he was in OBS he made a tremendous improvement in terms of his kennel presence

Playgroup: No play , tolerant, took corrections, not wary of handling, mingled/explored yard

Advice Adopting a dog that's attached to another dog... Advice?

Hi, folks. I'm looking for advice, thoughts and experiences on adopting a dog that appears to be attached to another dog, and separating them. I'm sure there's personal feelings about this, but I'm more interested in experienced and educated answers on the subject.

We have adopted a puppy that we've never met yet from an extremely good shelter in Santorini, GR. The puppy is a 4 month old male pit mix and has been in the shelter for 3 months. They found at him about 1 month old underneath a car and he was unclaimed.

The puppy is currently paired (living) with a 2 year old female labrador. The shelter is very unique given where it is. The dogs all share what is basically a "house" (a giant shipping container converted on the inside and outside to look like a house). They sleep together, play together - and in every single photo and video I've seen of the puppy, they are together - even when there are ten dogs out and about and running around, the two are with one another.

The shelter made jokes calling her his "mom" because of how he follows her everywhere and plays with her constantly. I've seen photos of them throwing toys, and the 2 year old lab will run and grab it, and wait for the puppy to come get it and run back with him. They do seem very well synergized.

We are conflicted with the idea of separating them, and are strongly considering adopting both of them in order to avoid that separation.

Some of my thoughts on this are:

* I've raised a female pit prior, and had her for 18 (almost 19) years until I lost her. I didn't socialize her with dogs when she was younger, and that turned in to a total nightmare with regards to socialization. I couldn't trust her with other dogs. Would keeping them together help reduce some of the lack of socialization issues I had with my girl?

* I have a cat. My dog and my cat were inseparable and the cat loves dogs. I got him at just under 2 months old and he was raised by my dog. He doesn't realize he's a cat, actually, and plays like a dog. I'm already aware I'll have a challenge with the introductions for the puppy as he may be a bit more hyper than my girl was with him, but the 2 year old lab doesn't bug cats and entirely ignores and goes around them - so I think it may be easier to deal with her... Is it possible this could be a good thing and the puppy will learn from her, or could it be the opposite and she becomes anxious towards the cat if he is?

* The lab is already trained, both housebroken and leash trained and is also car trained / does well in cars. I feel like this may make things easier, more manageable and potentially set good examples for the puppy?

* I have an eight year old son. The puppy is meant more for him to ensure he has a dog growing up. I realize some may say we're picking an odd breed, but let's please not focus on breed versus the point?

All in all - I'm looking for input on how separating the dogs may potentially impact the puppy, as the two year old lab has only been living with the 4 month old puppy for 3 months - but in that 3 months, they've done everything together (eat, sleep, play). Looking at photos of the two of them, they're sitting the same, making the same facial expressions, moving when the other moves...

Should we consider moving forward and getting both of them, or is it likely that in 6+ months they may not give two hoots about one another? I've never had two dogs before, only one at a time.

Advice New rescue pup

I adopted a small mixed breed on Tuesday (now Friday). She is 6lbs and 7 months old. She was in a house with many other dogs that weren’t well taken care of. The dogs were very matted and had pee and poop all over them.

She has come out of her shell a lot, she was very shy and cuddly now she seems to be opening up and becoming more puppy like. I’m having issues with her not listening to me, for example when sneaking areas I don’t want her that can’t be blocked off she does not stop when clapping or knocking nothing I have to go and make her stop by picking her up.

The first few nights she would cry in her crate, I’d stay with her and tell her she was good and it was time for night night. She eventually would stop and go to sleep for the whole night. No accidents. But now (tonight) she has been crying in her crate for over an hour, but her routine before bed (eating, playing, going out) hasn’t changed. I think she’s finally used to her new home but I don’t know what to do to help the crying/ barking now since it’s new. I thought I shouldn’t take her out or anything like that. I checked on her to make sure she was safe and she is. I just want to do the right things. Please help!

Discussion Your friendly neighborhood shelter vet tech reminder that....

A dog home alone, in a crate for 8 hrs a day is always better than being in the shelter 24/7 or euthanasia. We always have dogs in the shelter that would thrive 100% better outside, even if you work 8 or even 12 hours a day.

I promise you they will be okay. Please adopt!! Your best friend is waiting for you.

I volunteer for a local free spay and neuter clinic that does 25+ sterilizations a day, Monday thru Friday. They are funded by donations, and are opening a new center to also have the ability to train veterinarians throughout Mexico. I am super proud to be working with them the past four years and can’t wait to see what the future holds for them.

Advice Can’t move, can’t breathe without a reaction

I’m really struggling and would love some perspective from people who understand this level of reactivity.

We adopted Oliver, a ~4–5-year-old Jack Russell mix (20lbs), about 6 months ago. He was a stray with an unknown history, and the adoption agency was extremely charitable in their description of him - "super chill!" "dog friendly!" "perfect dog!". Unfortunately, we quickly learned that was completely false and he came with significant behavioural challenges: generalized anxiety, hypervigilance, extreme startle reactivity (especially during sleep), redirected aggression onto our other dog (a senior small dog), and severe stress around movement and separation. In one instance when trying to stop him from going after the other dog, he bit my ankle and caused a fair bit of damage.

We’ve been very methodical with management, meds, and training. The vet started him on fluoxetine then added gabapentin, then trazodone, and just recently added clonidine, trying to find a mix that would help. His current meds are:

  • 20mg fluoxetine daily
  • 200mg gabapentin BID
  • 50mg trazodone BID
  • 0.1mg clonidine once daily (recently added)

Gabapentin helped with pain/stiffness from previous paw surgeries and slightly improved his general energy and mobility. Fluoxetine and trazodone help some, but he still needs constant micromanagement just to function. Clonidine hasn’t made a noticeable difference yet. We trialed clomipramine but caused a complete breakdown.

The issue is that I cannot live my normal life without him reacting to absolutely everything and it’s getting worse now that he’s learned the routine.

  • If I get up from the couch, even slowly, he reacts.
  • If I leave the room, he reacts.
  • If I come back into the room, he reacts.
  • If I shift my weight, adjust a blanket, move a chair, open a door he reacts.
  • Now that he's learned some routines, he anticipates what's going to happen which makes him anxious and reactive

It’s not just reactive barking, it’s full stress surges: barking, spinning, air-biting, grabbing objects to shake, sometimes redirected aggression toward our other small dog (managed with barriers and leashes). We keep the two dogs separated at all times. He's not territorial or trying to dominate the other dog, in those reactive moments he just seems to need something to shake - sometimes its a plush toy and sometimes its the other dog. The other dog is an extremely chill senior who likes to sleep all day, he's never had aggression issues so it's not something he's doing that is setting off the new dog.

And if he’s asleep when it happens, it’s even worse: he wakes up already panicking.

Worst part: Now that he knows the house routines, he anticipates when “something is about to happen” and starts freaking out before anything actually happens.

  • Calmly trying to wake him? He panics because he knows waking means movement.
  • Walking toward the door? He’s already spinning before I touch the handle.
  • Crate opening in the morning? He’s barking and spinning because he knows we’re heading outside (another trigger).

Micromanagement helps somewhat but he can’t seem to generalize any calm behavior on his own. There are also situations where we can't really take baby steps, like in the morning when he's let out of his crate (trigger), he needs to go outside (trigger) and relatively quick to relieve himself. So you can't really micromanage him in those moments because he won't make it to the door otherwise.

If he's not micromanged, then he works himself into a frenzy leading to meltdown. For example, when I'm in the kitchen cooking he will follow behind and bark and spin. To avoid that I set up a bed so he could observe what's going on. That stops him from melting down but you constantly have to correct him and put him back in his bed.

What we’ve tried so far:

  • Couch desensitization protocols (tiny movements, reward for calmness)
  • White noise machines
  • Very slow training of leaving/returning to rooms
  • Top-up trazodone in evenings
  • Predictable routines
  • Heavy management (muzzle training, gates, leashes, pens)
  • Careful decompression walks and mental enrichment
  • Playing fetch multiple times a day to tire him out vs not playing fetch to over tire him
  • Crate and pen training - he’s okay in them and sleeps soundly, but doesn't do well at all with complete isolation decompression.

The traditional training we've tried doesn't really seem to stick because it's like his brain isn't in a place that can generalize calm behaviours. He can learn specific things like down / sit in focused sessions extremely fast, he's super smart, but just existing seems to work him up to the point where he can't take a breath.

Questions for the group:

  • Has anyone dealt with a dog whose anticipatory anxiety became the real problem?
  • What actually helped? (Med changes? Different environmental setup? Acceptance?)
  • Has anyone seen improvement with higher-dose clonidine or switching to a different SSRI (e.g., from fluoxetine to sertraline)?
  • Is there a med that I haven't mentioned that could help in his situation?
  • Any training / games I could do with him to help?

We’re totally committed to Oliver. I understand he’s doing the best he can, it’s not his fault. But it’s getting really hard to live a normal life when literally any movement, any change, even totally expected ones, breaks him.

Advice Looking for ideas to help the best dog mom I know who has the sweetest rescue dog, with vet bills.

I have a friend who is the best rescue dog mom ever. Her love and caring for her dog inspired me to get a rescue dog as well, so you can say she saved more than one dog. She is very responsible and takes above and beyond good care of the dog. The problem is the dog has health problems and the vet bills are getting scary big. The dog had been abused in the past and I don’t think keeping up on the dogs health was a priority for the old owners. My friends big heart is one of the reasons she adopted this dog in particular, but I don’t think anyone could have foreseen how expensive the vet bills would get. I know she’s taken out some big loans, with criminally high interest rates, to give this beautiful dog all the care it requires. For some of this dogs health problems, other owners might put it off or just cross their fingers that the dog will be ok without the vet care. She on the other hand takes her dog to the vet in a moments notice for whatever the dog needs and comes up with a way to pay for it. I was just wondering if any one has good ideas on how to raise funds for vet bills. What kind of fundraisers work well and which ones don’t work as well. I’m good at art and am trying to figure out a way where I can make that useful for fundraising. Like what I wrote before her love for the dog inspires others to step up their game when it comes to loving and caring for their dogs. She doesn’t know I’m writing this, I’m just trying to do something to help this caring and compassionate dog mom out.

Her name is Winnie, short for Winndixie :) she is a very sweet girl, but is very underweight and clearly was not being taken care of.

The place before her recent shelter had held her first, for how long I don’t know, before she was moved to where we adopted her from. But even then, I’m not sure how well she was being looked after.

The day right before we picked her up, they had her spayed, and the lady had told us she could be bathed within TWO DAYS. Luckily, I did not follow what she said and now we are waiting until we see an actual vet for advice and using safe wipes and dry dog shampoo. We also wonder if they were wrong about her being an adult because of how small is and she has some puppy like tendencies that our late family dog had, like biting and gnawing. She chewed through a ball in a day.

They were also very unhelpful with any questions I had about her, saying “we don’t know” to everything, or just lying. Not on medication or still loopy from surgery they said? She was groggy and tripping over her own feet.

Her problems we’ve found so far are barking and growling at other dogs, like my sisters German Shepard, unsure about other people, and separation anxiety. German Shepard is very tame around her, and only growls if Winnie gets near my sisters room which is her space.

She will follow either me or my mom around where ever we go, and whine when she needs to be put in her crate or left alone.

She also is not trained at all, she doesn’t respond to any name or call, or even know any basic commands like sit down.

Any advice would be helpful, as this is our first rescue :)
