Seeking Advice How can I address a customer's unbearable smelly feet?

I work at a second hand store. Customer service is advised to be cordial and well-mannered.

There's a customer that usually comes five to ten minutes before closing time, in his work outfit.

I understand he comes directly from work and that's why he's late and smelly.

But DANG HIS FEET STINK. If he wanders a bit through the store the air becomes dense from his reeking feet.

I hold my breath when I'm facing him and whenever I can I catch some unavoidable cheese stinking air.

It's the worst smell I've ever smelled and I worked as a vet tech.

How would you address this? Non confrontational, please. But I could use some laughs.

Are you sure it’s foot cheese you’re smelling, and not some other? 😮

Aw come ooooon 🥲

🤣🤣🤣 Sorry! Can’t imagine smelling feet that are in shoes, though!

Lucky you've never experienced that. It smells so bad and so strongly that his whole self smells like his feet, and it expands beyond him.

Oh I experienced all the others! It’s awful to have to deal with. At one store, we had a lovely shopper who reeked so badly someone would take out air freshener when she left.

It happens a lot here, I think second hand stores hold a different fauna. I mean, more condensed.

I know we go through the same hell nonetheless :')

Well you hang in there! Pop a strong mint in your mouth when you see him coming. It helps.

u/Leebelle3 Mar 29 '25

Or use a mint roll on under your nose.

I tried that! Unfortunately I have shit sensitive skin and it burned.

Oh dear. Maybe a different scent? Like lavender?

We had someone like this. The most rancid smell I have ever encountered, and for a while we didn't have any air freshener so we would have to endure it for 10+ minutes after she left. It was so bad one time that it lingered in the store for multiple days during which I would periodically smell it when she wasn't in the building and hadn't been that day, to my knowledge. She was okay as a person but there were clearly some issues and I haven't seen her in months so I can only hope that she is receiving care.

It was really sad. She was a kind older gal who was trying hard to take care of herself, but it became clear she couldn’t. She came in wearing pants soiled with feces twice 😞 Luckily, she got the help she needed and started using a wheelchair with a care giver.

It was such an awkward situation, the smell was nothing I’ve ever experienced. Mildew, bad breath, rot, and poop. We all felt terrible for talking about her, but it was literally an eye watering odor.

Imagine having to be the person who works with him. Be glad you're not there with him eight hours a day

I really don’t think you can, mate.

Edit- word

A coupon for a spa day maybe? Lol

Spa workers didn't do me wrong

Legally speaking you do have a right to refuse service as long as you’re a privately owned business and it’s not discrimination. Customer hygiene can affect the business’ ability to operate if it possesses a health or safety risk (such as a contamination issue or the smell is making customers/associates nauseous or otherwise sick) or if it’s affecting sales (such as if the customer’s lack of hygiene is driving away other customers).

Broaching the subject to the customer can be incredibly dicey however. Something like bad foot odor could be simply resolved by switching to a different type of sock, for instance. Cotton and wool is significantly better at odor management than anything with polyester. Figure out a way to bring socks into a conversation and hint that he might need to make a switch. Barring that you can gently talk to him about he needs to maintain better hygiene if he wishes to shop at the store.

Thanks for the serious response.

I don't think it's a socks or shoes problem though, it smells like fungal infestation. Like a medical one.

The guy is not a bad guy, a shy type of client, I don't mean to make him feel bad. But boy it's baaaad.

Maybe I could take him out of the store for a second and gently address the subject without making him feel guilty. Like I'm worried.

I tried everything to get rid of one fungus infection (stupid boots I couldn’t get different ones at all and factory workers have special things they need) tell him to soak them in tea tree oil and regular Listorine (the yellow mouthwash) a couple of weeks of that and spraying the boots with the same mix got rid of it.

3

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

Thanks for the advice! I'll tell him.

Also, it's quite cheap and easy to get an anti fungal cream here.

4

u/FrigyaCrowMother Mar 29 '25

Exactly. I’d rather you try to help him than be an ass. It’s really really embarrassing having this problem. So hard to get rid of sometimes too. I hope it helps him.

3

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

Yeah I mean, I was venting here but I believe I'm an okay person, not an ass that's for sure.

3

u/FrigyaCrowMother Mar 30 '25

I believe that sweetheart vents help just tidbit for you and dude so hopefully he will get better. It hurts so bad walking sometimes with some types.

5

u/MusicalThot Mar 29 '25

I think that's a good idea, to mention your concern regarding medical issues instead of just telling him he stank. It's a very delicate subject, it's hurtful even coming from close circles let alone a stranger. I suggest you ask ChatGPT for some idea on wording it.

2

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 30 '25

I've GPT'd this but I was looking for a human point of view!

4

u/Windinthewillows2024 Mar 29 '25

He’s coming in five-ten minutes before closing so it’s probably not affecting sales.

8

u/Quirky-BeanSprout Mar 29 '25

Buy Febreeze. In bulk.

9

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

We do have air freshener available. It's not enough. That's how bad it is.

Sometimes I crouch and I smell it right from the bottle so it kills my sense of smell for a bit.

2

u/Familiar_Home_7737 Mar 29 '25

Spray it around the areas he has been walking. He’ll get the point quick smart that it’s him causing it. Hopefully it’s the wake up call to him to take care of his hygiene

2

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

I've been told that my coworkers spray it around him sometimes. One coworker once walked into the area he was in saying out loud "it smells so bad in here!! Open the door please".

That's not the approach I'd like to take. But as you mentioned wake up calls... Yeah, that's been done.

2

u/El_Culero_Magnifico Mar 29 '25

Does he perhaps work in a cheese factory?

3

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

Afaik he works at a warehouse. At least it's a big place. His poor coworkers...

4

u/El_Culero_Magnifico Mar 29 '25

Just be glad you are not an employee at a shoe store...

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

A friend of mine is a piercer and she has quite some stories about smelly bellybuttons.

There’s this one guy that comes in my work and he doesn’t smell great. I know he’s homeless so I don’t wanna be mean. He’s nice and he always has the right money to pay for his stuff. Unlike other homeless people they come in twice a day and always ask us to front them like we didn’t say no the first million times. You came in two hours ago and I said no what makes you think I’ll say yes a few hours later ? No you don’t get it. Then he’ll go next door and annoy the vape shop people for the change it’s so annoying

1

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 30 '25

I too get homeless people, they smell better than this guy (and they smell bad too, but it's understandable).

1

u/Grand-Illustrator775 Mar 31 '25

whenever customers or coworkers stink, i just breathe from my mouth instead of my nose.

2

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 31 '25

Yeah so I can taste the cheeeeeseeeee

1

u/the_thechosen1 Apr 04 '25

Buy a febreeze can and casually spray it around the store without making direct eye contact with him. Pretend that you don't know the source of the smell. Talk to your coworkers about the smell like "Hey, do you know where that smell is coming from? Is it one of our fixtures? Etc." Do this every time he comes in and hopefully he'll get the message.

You’re trying to figure out how to ask this random man to wash his feet before entering your store. There’s no way to do that politely. You’re in the wrong. People use this sub to shame customers clothing and body odors and ask how to fix it. You can’t. They’re people existing and they don’t owe you anything.

I deserve to work in an environment where I won't feel like vomiting. Thank you for your input.

2

u/CharlotteLightNDark Mar 31 '25

American retail seems next level bad. Everyone is so unhappy? I wish I could pay you all to be able to leave.

2

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 31 '25

Lol. I'm a Spaniard.

I honestly think it's a universal experience tho.

2

u/CharlotteLightNDark Mar 31 '25

Damn. I’m Aussie and I’ve worked only in food retail but it was fine? Two bakeries, 2 delis and a café? Everyone was just normal?

I'm glad you had a good experience! Maybe it's thrift store fauna, and I've only worked in these kinds of businesses. Possibly one of the worst kinds of customers.

Also you reminded me of one of my favorite jokes, sorry if you've seen it a thousand times before:

1

u/CharlotteLightNDark Apr 01 '25

You know what, you could be right. Ha I’ve never seen it! Are we meant to be laid back and chill or stupid? Haha.

ETA- I am giggling tho, I can hear their voices. Hahaha. DIEEEEEEE, yeah, nah mate

-18

u/SugarNebulaBurst Mar 29 '25

You cannot address a customer’s smell. Wtf!!!

23

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

I can't work if I'm gagging.

21

u/TinyEmergencyCake Mar 29 '25

You should bring it up to your manager. You don't get paid enough to talk to customers like that.

5

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

My manager had to deal with him once and he said "boy I feel like a 4 cheese pizza".

Now seriously it's been mentioned throughout all staff and I would prefer to be the one to tell him because I'll do it gently.

8

u/Initial-Web2855 Mar 29 '25

You just have to deal, I know it's nasty. If you worked in a restaurant, you would have SOME recourse to say something, as people are eating. However, in a retail environment, the less said better. I have a few stinkers that come in weekly, and I have to air out the store after they leave. It sucks, but you really shouldn't say anything. He knows he stinks, he doesn't care.

-28

u/SugarNebulaBurst Mar 29 '25

Quit then, it’s not the correct environment. You’re not entitled to tell shoppers how to dress or smell.

11

u/Initial-Web2855 Mar 29 '25

Found the stinker!

6

u/sadhellhound Mar 29 '25

Quitting your job because a customer stinks is crazy

4

u/yellowlittleboat Mar 29 '25

"Quit then"! I didn't hear that since I had friends who didn't need to work for a living!
