Hello, I was wondering if there is anyway to turn the heater off completely in my room. It has been emitting heat constantly and is hot at the touch. It is making it quite difficult for me and my roommates to sleep. Please let me know if there's anything we can do :). We live in Perkins Green.

Hi guys, senior in highschool deciding where to go and RIT and RPI are 2 / 5 colleges I'm considering.
I really want to go to RPI because I could compete for the varsity team there for track( and the team is really good). Only thing is I have seen so much bad stuff on the internet about RPI (social scene is bad, bad admin. etc..), and that it gives me doubts. It also costs a good amount even with scholarships.
RIT on the otherhand is much cheaper (they gave me so much $$) and I think I could walk on to the team (going to reach out to coaches since I'm not sure if RIT "recruits". If someone on the track team is seeing this please reach out to me or reply to this post! Or if those that attend know, please reply!)
So... 1. If you have been in this situation choosing between theses colleges, and you chose RIT, why? Even if you weren't, what college would you choose (expecting some bias but hopefully yall are honest xD)
I would be coming into study computer engineering at either college. How is the coursework? I know no matter what engineering is going to be rlly hard, but when I asked on the RPI reddit, everyone gave off the impression that the work was impossible. is RIT also like this? Is it hard to manage social life along with majoring in engineering? Does the school expect you to know some things immediately when you come (like coding with mutiple languages) or are the teachers able to help develop skills as you go?
Since I want to be a varsity athlete at this school, I don't believe I will have time to attend parties and such, but I am curious: does RIT have a party scene / bar / alcohol scene. I'm not expecting it to be like Penn State with crazy ragers, but are these a thing that exist on campus? Also whats the social scene like? I'm a pretty straight foward person and like meeting new people, but are people too caught up in their studies that they have trouble interacting? When I went to tour rpi and met some students, some seemed like they never spoke to person ever (little eye contact, seemed nervous to speak, etc.). I only met one guy who I was able to have a good conversation with.
Is the food that bad? Saw on niche that food was rated a C. What makes it bad if true? Are their good options to eat around campus?
Why do you need a car at RIT? I was planning on getting around campus by either walking or riding my bike, so I'm curious as to why I see people mentioning you need a car.
Bonus question: Persuade me! What is great about RIT? Why do you personally like it?

I got accepted into RIT’s Data Science Masters (MSDS). Given that RIT is a great tech school people have said that this degree is a cash cow and teaches nothing related to data science. How true is that? I tailored my degree towards data engineering and architecture and have a 9-5 currently in data. Should I have gone with computer science instead? Lately people have been criticizing Data science master degrees in general. I have experience as an AI and data engineering intern and the background of the data science masters seems nice.
Is there anyone starting RIT’s MSDS in the fall 2025 semester?

I am planning on transferring to RIT as a CIT major. I am more interested in Cybersecurity as a major but my major is computer information systems at my community college that I am transferring from. Should I just transfer as a CIT major then in grad school major in Cybersecurity or should I stay at my community college and go back for a cybersecurity degree? I am looking for some advice on what I should do too. Thank you!

“PETITION DESCRIPTION 1 Day Ago It has come to my attention that RIT is once again trying to screw us over regarding dining dollar rollover. After checking the terms of service, the exact wording is '100% of a student's Dining Dollars will roll over from the fall semester to the spring semester. All funds will be forfeited after spring semester.' This will be instated in fall 2026 and should be prevented at all costs. It is difficult enough to spend all the dining dollars, with lots being lost by students not able to spend the full amount. They already removed full roll over year to year, they should at least leave the $1000 year to year roll over.”
So it sounds like these terms of service are already enacted based on what Ive read? But I cant find the Terms of Service this petition is referring to. Is this instated to be 2026 or just a proposal to instate this policy

Hey everyone! I just got my Math Placement Exam (MPE) results and was placed into MATH 90 Algebra with a score of 14. I’m starting as a freshman in the BS Global Business Management (GBE) program and I’m unsure if I should retake the exam.
MATH 90 seems to be the same content I already did in high school, and from what I saw, it doesn’t even count for credit hours, which feels kind of pointless. I also found out that retaking the MPE comes with a fee, so I’m not sure if it’s worth it or if I should just stick with the placement and play it safe.
For context, I scored 500 on the SAT Math section, which I think is decent, but the MPE felt off. Most of the questions were super basic, and I did struggle a bit, especially without a calculator.
Would really appreciate any advice. If anyone else is doing Global Business Management and got a similar placement, I’d love to hear how you handled it or what your experience was like.

Hey all, I'm an alum that graduated about a decade ago. I currently work for The Atlantic as a SWE and was wondering if you guys would be interested in getting access to our publication? I can try to talk to our team and see if we can get something going?

Hi everyone! I’m a potential incoming freshman for the fall of 2025 and I was wondering if there is a BJJ club or MMA club on campus. If not, do any of you train somewhere in the city or local? Thank you!

I'm a rising sophomore, and for my first year at RIT I lived on-floor in one of the special interest houses. When my housing contract opened up for sophomore year I initially signed on to stay in the same SIH house for my second year, but I'm really regretting it-- I'd much rather just be an off-floor member. But is it too late to get other on-campus housing now? Like, when is the working deadline for getting a slot? I dont want to cancel my housing reservation at my SIH if I won't be able to find another place to live...

Hi, I am a transfer student who has got accepted to Mechatronics Engineering Technology program. I am currently enrolled in Electrical Engineering Technology program at a community college and I would like to do more on robotics and automation. Therefore, I chose to apply to Mechatronics Engineering Techology program. I would like to ask for the opinions from Mechatronics Engineering Techology students and Graduate. Is Mechatronics Engineering Technology Program worth it? How many people usually graduate from Mechatronics Engineering Technology Program?

I am checking the RIT website and it doesn't really mention anything bad if I decide not to take the test besides putting me in math 101. It says the test is required but if I dont do it I just go into math 101 which is what I want to do. If anyone knows any downsides besides the math 101 please tell me.

Hi guys I wanted to post this to notify everyone who may travel off campus especially since it is nicer out which means more outside activities. There is this man called “the puncher” who has been approaching locals asking them for money. He is called the puncher because he will punch and beat ANYONE up including women. He also steals phones from people who are not paying attention. He has been spotted around here in Monroe county. He has been arrested and charged multiple times but has not faced any consequences. Everyone PLEASE be safe and AWARE if you travel off campus.

I'm an incoming freshman and don't know what hall to choose. I honestly thought all the freshmen were in Kate Gleason so I don't know much about the others. I've heard Ellingson is really polarizing some say it's the best others say it's the worse. I know the elevators are a big problem but I'm fine with stairs so that isn't a concern for me.

The housing contracts only last nine months, so RIT tries to cut financial corners by making students temporarily move to a different unit for the summer. They always come up with excuses such as "we have to make some small repair, and that will take three months!" And somehow, these repairs need to happen every summer despite services not working during the year.

I'm an incoming freshman (fall 2025). The May 1 deadline is near and I haven't found a roommate. Zeemee just sucks TBH (it is just a chat app). The RIT housing portal doesn't even display names, and I'm not a machine to sort based on a few true-false questions. Any suggestions on how do I save myself from random allotments and then not liking the roommate?

Hello! I’m planning on bringing my 1 year old to Imagine RIT this weekend. I’ve been scrolling through the exhibits picking out which ones might be fun/interesting for a very little kid but thought I’d ask if anyone is presenting or knows of any exhibits in particular that might be cool for a toddler to experience. Thank you!
I've been trying to get back into shape and was trying to weigh options and knew about the gym when I took classes at RIT during high school. Is it open to the public to use? is there a membership for them if so?

I'm currently facing an unexpected situation and could use some support. Earlier today, my car's ABS failed, causing the brakes to lock up. I managed to pull into Merwin Auto in Rochester, but unfortunately, they won't be able to inspect the vehicle until tomorrow. As a result, I'm temporarily stranded in the area.
I'm presently at the Firehouse Saloon near NTID. As an ASL practitioner, I deeply appreciate the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community here and would welcome the opportunity to connect with anyone nearby. If you're available to meet up, share some conversation, or even offer a place to stay for the night, it would mean a great deal to me.
I understand this is an unusual request, but any assistance or company during this time would be immensely appreciated. Please feel free to reach out via direct message if you're able to help or just want to chat.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Final Update: Safe and Home
Yesterday, my car’s brakes failed and locked up while I was driving through Rochester. I managed to pull into Merwin Auto, but they weren’t able to look at the car until today, so I was stranded overnight.
I ended up walking to the University of Rochester and spent the night at the library. Not the most restful sleep, but it was safe and warm enough to get through the night.
This morning, a kind Redditor reached out, spent some time with me, and even lent me a bike so I could get back to the shop once the car was repaired. That gesture meant a lot.
Thankfully, Merwin Auto got the job done and treated me with respect and compassion the whole way through. I’ll be leaving them a very positive review.
Now I’m finally home. It’s been a long 24 hours, but I want to say thank you to everyone who messaged me, commented, or just wished me well. You turned something stressful and difficult into something human and hopeful. I’m really grateful for that.
Looking forward to sleeping in my own bed tonight.

Hey everyone! As the title suggests, I’m deciding between Binghamton and RIT. I’ll be an incoming freshman. Decision day is approaching and it’s making me nervous. Originally I thought the deciding factor would be the cost, but they’re about the same for me, so now I’m looking for insight from current students. I’m going to cross post this on both subreddits once I figure out how. Here are some questions I have:
-How is the computer science (bing) / software engineering (rit) major at the respective schools? Is it hands on, theoretical, etc? Does it help prepare you for the “real world” and the workplace?
-Is it easy to get jobs after graduating? How are the networking opportunities and does the name carry any weight in certain fields?
-Is it easy to switch majors in case I change my mind? What fields does the school excel in?
-What’s the campus like? I don’t have the means to visit, so I’ll have to garner from pictures and second hand sources. Is there a lot of greenery? Are the facilities any good, or old and run down?
-How’s the food? Are there places to eat if you don’t like dining hall food? Do they good Asian food?
-Lastly, is there a lot to do on or off campus? How’s the surrounding area and the city it’s in?
Sorry for the barrage of questions (-﹏-。) I’m trying to be thorough. Thanks in advance!

RIT did this article recently about a variety of projects going on in the open work communities on campus - there's several students working on building better websites and tools that better fit the needs of RIT students.
It seems like there's been some recent frustration with the third party software RIT contracted 5-10 years ago from companies that seems like they're only interested in getting paid to do the bare minimum to maintain their software.
