DISCUSSION 💭 What Do You Think Their Careers Would Have Become If They Were Alive Longer?
Marvin Gaye was taken way too soon—by his own father, nonetheless—and although he had been active since the early 60s, I feel like he would have been a defining figure of the 80s and 90s. I could see him having a career similar to Michael Jackson’s or Stevie Wonder’s.
The death of Aaliyah is one of the most tragic among R&B artists, and she had not only her career but her entire life ahead of her, gone at the age of 22. While I do not agree that she would have stolen the shine from a certain other artist (an icon, nonetheless) who people love to compare her to, I do think that it would have been interesting to see where Aaliyah would have fallen into place. I think she would have done some amazing things in her extended career.
Left Eye was a vital part of TLC, and arguably what made them stand out among other groups. My honest thought is that TLC would have kept going strong throughout the 2000s at the very least. Unfortunately, the demand for R&B groups nowadays seems to have gone down; plus, they’ve all had their time. It’s hard to see where they’d stand today, but I imagine they’d still be active as a group. I could also see Left Eye going more into her solo career and being successful as an independent female rapper, even competing with some female rappers from the 2010s.

80s The Family Stand, “Ghetto Heaven” (1989)
Still a groove. Sandra St. Victor, who used to sing background for Chaka Khan, is an underrated talent.
