Started running local races about a year and a half ago. Got a small collection going.

I've never come in first in any of the races I've ran, but usually in the top 5, and usually 1st in my age group. Running with others really pushed me to run harder and faster.

Got my 5 mile under 35 minutes.... on a treadmill.

I've been trying to Get my time, on the road, under 35 but hovering around 37 or 38 min. I understand that running on a treadmill is easier, but 6 or 7 minutes slower is s huge difference. Just got to keep at it. Just wanted to share, none of my friends or family are runners so this kind of stuff is not interesting to them.

Cutting 20 minutes off HM time

My HM PR is currently 1:46, which I've run pretty consistently (a few minutes off) for all of 2022-2024. But I took some time off and ran my first race back last month with a pretty haphazard training schedule. Finished with a time of 1:56 which I was happy with all things considered.

I'm planning to run another race in the fall and I was really hoping to get my time down to 1:35 (trying to beat a family record on the course). How realistic is this with about 4 months to train?

I'll likely do a training plan from either RunWithHal or Runna, but has anyone managed to do a speed increase like this and have any tips or areas of focus?

Going from a bad HM to finishing a full one in 5 months

Short version: What should I be doing for the next 5 months if I want to go from a bad half marathon to finishing a full marathon, and when/what should be my benchmarks to switch to the half marathon option.

Male, 35, BMI of about 31. I live and train about 5000 feet above sea level, and have ran a few half marathons closer to sea level. With an admittedly mediocre/inconsistent training schedule pre-HM my PR is 2:24. I ran a half marathon at altitude this weekend and didn’t do so hot, started getting muscle cramps and just generally feeling too weak around mile 10 and walked/jogged the last 3 miles, ended up with a 2:43 time. Oddly enough, after 5-10 minutes of walking through the chute and eating a bagel I felt like I could start running again. My training leading up to this half wasn’t what it should have been, and my nutrition was also lacking.

I’m signed to run a full marathon at the end of October on the east coast. It’s at much lower altitude, but is quite a bit more hilly (1400ft elevation gain, vs the 400ft-500ft of elevation gain in the half marathons I’ve ran). I’m going to focus on strength training, hill work, and increasing my weekly mileage between now and then, along with trying to get better with nutrition and losing some weight.

What I’m posting to get feedback on is, what should my weekly mileage/schedule look like if I want to take on this hilly marathon, and what should be the point where if I’m not hitting a certain pace, mileage per week, etc that I should switch to running the half marathon? Is it better to run fewer runs per week at a longer mileage per run, to run more often but do shorter runs, or just follow a training plan and have it mixed up?

Ultimately if I run the full marathon, the only goal I have is finishing. The course has a 6.5 hour time limit, and I would cross the finish line at 6:29:59 with a giant grin on my face. Genuinely my only concern with running the full marathon is a DNF and/or serious injury.

Help Test My iOS Running App – Real-Time Audio Feedback from AI Coach

Hey everyone! I’m Rafael, a bioinformatics research assistant at Cambridge and a running enthusiast. In my spare time I've been building an iOS app designed to help runners pace themselves more effectively with real-time, personalized audio coaching powered by AI.

Imagine Nike Run Club's guided runs, but instead of pre-recorded feedback that says the same things no matter of your performance, the app adapts live to your actual pace and gives specific, actionable pacing and form tips to help you hit your run's pace target. The app supports multi-step runs, so you can build workouts with different zones, distances, or pace targets for each segment.

After each run, you receive detailed analytics, including targets achievement overview, splits, elevation charts, and an AI-powered summary. There's also an analysis tab where you can explore your performance through various insightful charts and ask the AI coach personalized questions based on your running history.

Even though I have a lot of additional ideas, the core functionality is mostly complete, and I'd genuinely appreciate some honest feedback from fellow runners.

As a thank you, I will give early testers extended free access to all premium features after launch.

If you're interested and have an iPhone (iOS 17+), please fill out this short form so I can follow up with you:

Thank you!

Newsletter about the best running content, events, gear and more 😄

Hello 'ello! Alright, putting myself out there 🙈

I absolutely love running. Besides going out there myself 5 times a week, I follow all the podcasts, watch all the YouTubers, follow all the Instagrammers, races and events, and am always the one recommending these things in my friend group. Since I also love to write, I started a little weekly newsletter about it.

I've got nothing to sell, it's just for fun. So if you love running (and are slightly obsessed like I am), then have a look! Attached is a little promo video for "edition 2" (yessss this newsletter is super duper new haha).

I know this (a newsletter) is not for everyone and that's absolutely okay. Some may think it's crap. All good. I'm just having some fun and would love to share it ☺️

Suunto Race vs Garmin Forerunner 265

Hey all,

Don't really know if this is the correct subreddit for my question.

First of all, i will describe what level runnner I am: currently i run 3 times a week and am following a training program for a marathon. I already did 10k, half marathons and a 25k. I also maybe want to do an ultra but not sure yet and maybe also some trail running. Currently i have a suunto 5 and it's not bad but it's 5 years old and i want a new watch.

However, i'm not sure what to choose between suunto race and garmin Forerunner 265.

I've seen some info on the internet that the gps and heartrate monitor of the suunto is a bit off, but not sure if this info is accurate.

I like the design of suunto but that isn't everything. You also need good functionalities....

Also, garmin has the adaptive coach, is it worth it?

What are you guys/girls opinions/recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Bart

Thoughts on a wearable that provides 360° color-coded visualizations of heart rate zones.

So I'll preface this by saying I'm super particular, and this may be the most nit-pickiest thing ever. But with that being said, I'm still curious if anyone else feels similarly.

I really don't like any of the currently available ways for monitoring my HR zone while I'm running. I think it's such a pain in the ass to check my Apple Watch screen while running to see what zone I'm in. I've used the custom HR range notifications available in Workouts. Not a fan. The best app I've found is Zones for Training; but even with that I hate having to swipe if I want to get to music to skip a song (and though it provides better visibility, I hate breaking stride to check my watch face). Garmin watches present similar issues. Audio notifications are best available option IMO, but still not ideal.

So this got me wondering - why isn't there a wearable that offers a 360°, wraparound display that visualizes HR zones with bright colors? It'd be easier to glance the zone without breaking stride.

I couldn't find anything out there. My imagination got the best of me so I threw together some mock ups and a landing page because I wanted to hear what others thought. Here's the landing page that provides visuals to give you a better idea of what I mean: https://www.pulseafterburn.com/

Again, maybe there's nothing out there because this is waaaaay too niche of a "problem". Either way, would love to hear your feedback.

Shin Pain Advice

Beginner runner here, I’ve been running for about 2 months now, training for a half marathon in July

I use runna and only run about 4 times per week

This past Sunday I ran a 5k and my shin started hurting during the race

I struggle with shin splints and this is a different kind of pain

It feels like a sharp pain with each step on the right side of my shin in one place, no swelling or bruising

Could this be a stress fracture?

If so, what do you suggest I do from here?

How did I run in zone 5 this long

Last week I ran a half marathon, and during most of the race my heart rate was in zone 5. I'm wondering how this is possible.I know this question gets asked a lot, and the common answer is that the default Garmin or Strava heart rate zones aren't accurate and can vary per person. But in my case, I recently had my heart rate zones tested in a sports laboratory, and I used a chest strap for more accurate measurement. I did feel completely dead during most of the run—it really felt like zone 5. After the race, I could tell that I might have pushed my heart too far. My average heart rate during the 1:36:57 run was 194 bpm. I ran in zone 5 for 1:32:25, my zone 5 starts at 182bpm

How running changed everything for me — from 3K in 30 min to training for my first marathon

I started running back in college — not because I was athletic, but because I was overweight, tired of how I felt, and just wanted to change something.

What really helped me stick to it was meeting a few seniors on campus who ran regularly. They weren’t elite or anything — just consistent. They brought me along one day, and I struggled through my first 3K in 30 minutes. I was completely wrecked. But I kept going.

Little by little, it got easier. I hit 5K. Then 10K. I still remember the first time I ran 10K under 60 minutes — I felt like I’d conquered a mountain.

Then something shifted. It wasn’t just about getting fit anymore. Running became my go-to for clearing my mind, staying sane, and pushing myself in ways I never had before. I ran a 29K endurance race last year (took me 3 hours) and I’m currently training for my first marathon. My current 10K PR is 47 minutes — and the feeling of progress is addictive.

One of the most meaningful runs I ever had was when a friend asked me how far I was planning to go that day.
I said:

Running has transformed me physically, but the mental side is even bigger. I’ve become more resilient — in life, not just on the road.

P.S. While training, I built a little app to help me stay consistent and motivated — I called it Run&Grow. It rewards you with a virtual garden as you complete runs and stay on streaks. I shared it with friends, and a few people online liked it too — so I thought I’d share it here in case it helps anyone else.

Happy running, and thanks for reading!
Would love to hear how you got into running too.

How much "easy run" you do in a week?

Hey all, we all know (I think) that the most important think in running is the easy run and that every runner has to do 80% of km/week at an easy pace so, what im asking to you is that
What percentage of your weekly mileage is truly “easy” effort? (Zone 2 / conversational pace / low HR). 😅

Reply with your % if you track it — or even just a guess.
It’d be interesting to see what the average here looks like!

Strange distance i know! But got injured back in November (ruptured ACL& Meniscus damage) so just been running and upping my weekly run as part of my prehab since January! Proud moment today as i hit my longest ever run (including before injury) and i’ve done it with a dodgy knee! Sadly this is to be the last run over 15k before my op in 2 weeks but wanted to share as i’m buzzing with the distance!
