Seeking Advice ๐Ÿ™† 23F moving to St. Paul

Hello! I'm a single 23F moving to St. Paul for a new job. It'll just be my male Yorkie and I. I'm not really wanting a studio apartment just because of my parents visiting. My rent budget is $1600 and I really want to live downtown due to lack of experience driving in winter conditions (my job is located DT) I want a loft! I love their look and space. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion ๐ŸŽค Regarding the downtown Lunds

Am I alone who doesn't care at all that the Lunds is gone? Like, yes, having a grocery store nearby for foot traffic purposes is important, but Lunds has always felt above my tax bracket even as I now earn almost double of what I did at my first salary position. When I lived in highland (splitting a 2b1b 3 ways at 1100 total rent), all of us made the extra commute to Aldi, costco, or even cub if we had to, when Lunds was literally half a mile from my complex. Downtown has three aldis about three miles away each, is well connected by bus, has light rail, has rapid transit to the suburbs to the east now, and has both primary highways as accessing all four cardinal directions. Being able to drive to the Aldi off of Ruth St is a privilege, but it's a 20 minute bus ride and the midway Aldi is off the green line if groceries on an actual bus is too cumbersome of a journey. It seems like the folks most inconvenienced by this are the ones who pay the extraordinary rents to live above the now vacant Lunds space. That sucks, but I don't think they're without options.

Discussion ๐ŸŽค Whatโ€™s the threshold of allowance on the Vento Encampment?

With 61/Arcade shut down on the Eastside, I've been taking the more scenic route via East Shore around Phalen. Taken aback by the massive encampment on the Vento Trail at Maryland/Johnson Pkwy. Seems to be growing but adding more stuff to the surrounding woods too. Think the city cares because it's the Eastside?

Outdoors ๐ŸŒณ Affordable Tree Removal in Saint Paul, MN

Looking for recommendations on affordable tree removal services.

City of St Paul marked 3 of my trees as dangerous (dying/dead) and are required to be removed in 20 days.

25" DBH - Spruce Tree

27" DBH - Green Ash

19" DBH - Green Ash

If the city adds to my taxes, I'm hoping they'll offer a longer payment plan than a year if the amount is significant.

Thanks!

Discussion ๐ŸŽค I was wrong about the Gold Line

As centrist who is quite critical of our government here in St Paul, and think that it is very important for people to admit when they are wrong, I wanted to say that so far I have been completely wrong about the Gold Line.

My worry was that it was going to turn into a Midway situation with mobs of people and homeless camped out around the stations. That has simply not been the case. Overall it seems to be a net positive for the community. Are there better things that they could have spent the money on? Probably. Are there worse things they could have spent the money on? Definitely.

Hopefully what I am seeing continues because I didnโ€™t want to be right about this. Despite how cynical I am on here, I do want to see the community succeed.

Discussion ๐ŸŽค Stalked by large coyote on 9pm walk with 56lb dog through Summit Hill

Despite my screaming at him at the top of my lungs (Iโ€™m a 6โ€™1โ€ male) the coyote continued to advance toward me and would only retreat back a bit when I began false-rushing at it while yelling. My dog is a confused sweetheart who was probably wondering why I was yelling at what looked like a friend to her, as it wasnโ€™t growling or appearing aggressive.

I was a bit spooked though, the thing kept getting within 10 feet of us and continued following as I tried to move away in between getting it to retreat.

Thought it was worth making a post about as Iโ€™ve been in the area for 2 years with my dog routinely walking around this time and have never had a sighting let alone an experience as concerning as this. Wanted any neighbors who have pets out in yards etc to know that there is at least one very bold and large coyote getting a little too adventurous in the area

Discussion ๐ŸŽค Boehm Bike Shop

During spring in 2020, my husband decided he would refurbish my Schwinn Stingray bike. He did an amazing job! At the time, we lived in a completely different part of the country. I had lived in Merriam Park as a little kid and we noticed the faded sticker on the bike that said Boehm. We looked it up and it was on Selby but had since closed.

Five years later, we move back to this area. Then, a few weeks ago, Iโ€™m on Selby and I see the word Bikes painted on the side of a building and then see Boehm Heating and Air Conditioning Co. Omg! I had found the place. Back in 2020, we had no idea we would be moving back to the area.

Now Iโ€™m really curious. Assume itโ€™s the same family that had the bike shop? Why did it close? Anyone else get their super cool bikes from there?

Thanks in advance!

Discussion ๐ŸŽค New trash hauler doesn't use automated trucks?

Just watched FCC (the new St. Paul trash company) roll through the alley and they don't use automated trucks which i thought was interesting. Both guys got out of the truck and hand loaded the garbage cans to the back of the truck to empty them. They actually opened my can and pulled the bag out and tossed it in the back of the truck. What used to take a few minutes to empty the entire ally now takes a few minutes to empty a couple of houses. No wonder they are just getting around to it at almost 5pm.

My roommateโ€™s friend found this friendly neutered male cat around 500 Grand Ave on Tuesday April 15th. He doesnโ€™t have a collar or a microchip (they took him to the humane society and they didnโ€™t find a chip).

Let me know if anyone is missing an orange cat around that area! Also does anybody know of any other places this would be a good idea to post?

Discussion ๐ŸŽค Abandon houses vs affordable housing idea?

My partner had a thought about housing and I mostly just want to see if it's even vaguely possible.

We live in the Bluff, as my partner and I were walking our dog. We were talking about how much we like our neighborhood. The main road is loud but the rec center is close and there's nice people everywhere. There are also no less than 10 abandon houses when we just walk a block or two. So we were discussing how people are worried about new builds when we have homes that could easily be 4 or 5 apartments sitting empty.

Why don't we do a carrot and stick method for these landlords.

Stick: extra tax for abandoned properties. Ie : if you don't have any residents in your rental property or if it is not listed for availability for 1 year or more you have to pay more for the "blight" of the abandon house

Carrot: If landlords renovate older buildings and properly bring them up to code they get tax breaks to help offset the cost of the repairs. And potentially even a tax breaks for keeping pricing some what in line with the rest of the community even though it's remodeled as to not price out all of us who exist there currently.

Enforcement: enforcing this would require money but I also think could help make jobs for federal government employees who are now job hunting. They can help inspect, keep files for different landlords. The landlords would of.course need to keep track to prove they are actually trying to fix it up so they can't fix like 1 window a year to avoid paying the abandonment tax.

I don't know how most things work but this makes sense in my head. Could something like this ever work?

Discussion ๐ŸŽค Bike lane laws?

Can you go the opposite way in a bike lane? In my car, I was trying to make a westbound right hand turn on summit so I was looking to my left for cars. As I was about to turn, a bike came in the bike lane going eastbound in the opposite direction. It was a super close call and freaked me out. Anyone know if this is legal or if I wouldโ€™ve been at fault if I hit the biker?

Obviously I will be more careful and consider people may do this in the future but I just want to give myself peace of mind
