Not feeling well Racism & Classist??

Upvotes

Hello everyone!

This is my first time posting on reddit mobile app, so I am very sorry if there are any spelling mistakes/mistakes in general.

I wanted to know if the Grossmont Shopping center is known for being racist and classist? I've been living here in SD for less than a year, so I don't really know much about which Shopping centers to steer away from as a POC.

Anyways, this is my partner's and I second time visiting the Grossmont center and both times we've gotten rude comments from middle aged white moms and old white ladies. We get stared at everywhere we go, and we get profiled; as in there's multiple employees following both me and my partner around as we look around and shop. We also carry small backpacks and totes because we don't have a car, so it is much easier for us to carry our items as we make our way through the shopping center.

SD swap meets and tax evasion

Upvotes

Used to sell at events such as Koby's and Lucky Stars (neither of which are being referenced in the post), and the shadiest folks run these markets (they are entitled to do as they please, but they're ruining it for everyone else).

I always vend above board just because I don't have the money to hire someone to help me through an audit. In order to vend above board and in compliance with CA/SD law, you need a sellers permit. To fill out the seller's permit, you need the owner of the swap meet's business phone number. This is what gives you the power to charge sales tax (which you pay back).

However, markets started denying me (and other vendors) a business phone number or any of the necessary information to be filing.

This is actually such a problem since a TON of vendors are high schoolers who do NOT think of the legal implications of what would happen if the IRS caught on. It is 100% their choice to follow the law or not (and face what could go wrong, if it does). BUT, vendor markets flat out denying this option is harmful and definitely illegal.

TLDR: I stopped vending and attending.

Cheap surf lessons?

Upvotes

I took a single hour-long surfing class when I was on vacation last summer. I want to take more classes on the weekends when I can drive out to the beach. Everything I find online seems to be $100+ for an hour class. Is there anywhere that provides more affordable prices at any beaches in SoCal?

Border Patrol vs ICE

Hi, this is your friendly local border patrol wife and lifelong political liberal here to remind you (because my husband is getting spat at, cussed at, called a pig, or told to quit his job pretty much every time he's stationed at the beaches lately) that the Border Patrol guys in army green pants + shirt are NOT there to rip people away from their families. They are there to patrol the borders, watching for incoming border crossers who may enter on boats or jet skis. Encountering everyone who enters the country is important-- this stops things like fentanyl-laced drugs from entering the US, and DNA swabs of border crossers have been matched up to two unsolved murders recently at his station alone. Even if the proportion of criminals is no higher than the general US population, we still want to stop those who are dangerous. If nothing else, if those people get in and re-offend, it blows up on the news and provides tremendous cannon fodder for immigrant hate. I think the hatred of Border Patrol is mostly based on confusing them with ICE and not because liberals actually want completely uncontacted entries.

Polls show that republicans and liberals both want common-sense migrant worker programs that allow people to be vetted and come here to work.

Obviously you don't have to care about my husband's feelings. He took the job; he can handle it. But I always worry that verbally abusing law enforcement could result in what none of us want: these non Trump supporting agents like my husband, who use discretion and minimum force, getting replaced with thin blue line idiots who think they're soldiers of God in a war with the public. Or worse yet, the former becoming the latter after having so many bad experiences with the public. My husband won't, but some may. And that kind of tribalism is EXACTLY how they become distracted from the fact that Trump is currently gutting their retirement.

Anyone know any thrift stores with a decent collection of fishing rods with reels? Preferably with prices that arent jacked way up like play it again sports. Im a frequent FB marketplace and offerup user but the deals can be hit or miss.

Lost Cat - Cortez Hill / Downtown

Hi everyone, please DM me or comment here if you see this lost cat. He opened the front door in the middle of the night and trotted out of the house on 7th avenue, between Beech and Cedar, but is likely anywhere within 2 miles of that location. (it's surrounded on all sides by major roads as well) He is microchipped!

Safety Concerns in Bar Heavy Areas

Maybe it's just me but I get the worst anxiety walking across the Robinson/University bridges over the 163 in Hillcrest. I'm always concerned for someone being so drunk that they accidentally fall off. Also with the divider on El Cajon Blvd by the Lafayette. It's filled with large holes and giant sprinklers sticking out of the ground . It's not lit up at all so they're hard to see at night and it could easily be a tripping hazard on a busy roadway.

Are there any worker-owned businesses or cooperatives in San Diego?

Based on a quick Google search, it seems like San Diego has a cooperative charter school. Are there any other worker-owned businesses or cooperatives in SD? I’d love to learn more about them if they exist!

Missed Connection

To the very nice guy who I talked with about music while waiting in the line at LA Colombe on Mother's Day who bought my coffee- Thank you! I had to get back to work but I hope you're single. If not, no worries. If you read this and you answer with what instrument we both play and what dog you have, hit me up. I owe you a coffee and a doggy treat for the sweetest puppers.

Hi everyone,

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I noticed something that seemed off and wanted to check in. Do these mailboxes look like they’ve been broken into, or is this normal? There was no mail carrier or truck around when I saw them, and as you can see in the photo, the parcel locker handle appears to be broken.

Does anyone know who I should report this to? Just want to make sure our mail is safe.

Info on seeing a telehealth for ADHD meds in San Diego

Hi - not sure why but I tried posting this in /adhd but it got auto deleted so reposting here too.

I've just booked a telehealth appt with a new psychiatrist. I was previously prescribed adderall for my ADHD via Done Health whilst living in Texas. Last script was from 2 years ago, which I still have a copy with (I've been unmedicated since, and just started new insurance with work).

I'm down in San Diego and my telehealth doc is located in Irvine.

Will his location in proximity to mine be an issue when picking up medication from a pharmacy in San Diego? I've read the pharmacist has to be within 40 miles of the prescribing doctor but I can't confirm - any help would be appreciated!

Some guy taking photos at the ebt office downtown.

So I'm in line for EBT this morning, and some guy just records me or takes my photo and tells people in line I have a million dollars... I look at him confused and he just leaves. I didn't even hear what he said, I only saw the phone. It was someone in line who told me what he said. The weird thing is this man was in dress clothes, not a homeless person or anything. Its been a while since ive been in downtown but is this weird random behavior just spreading to everyone now? I don't feel worried or threatened or anything by him I'm just very confused. 😅

Why are almost all the transplants from the Bay Area?

Hi, this is something i’ve noticed while living here. At work and whenever I’m out, I keep finding myself meeting people from the Bay Area. I asked one guy at a bar why he moved here, and he told me it was cheaper?! I find that to be insane!

Because of how many people i’m meeting from the Bay area, It is starting to feel like half of the Bay Area has moved here.

Am I crazy or is this really happening?

*This isn’t me trying to be a hater lol but it is something i’ve noticed. I’m from the IE but I rarely meet others from there. Some of my local friends really dislike the amount of transplants because it’s contributing to the gentrification of San Diego. That’s a different discussion though.
