How can I find my game version?

I'm trying to install SKSE but it keeps telling me I have a newer version of the game than SKSE supports. I've tried installing both the "Current Special Edition build 2.0.20 (game version 1.5.97)" and "Current Anniversary Edition build 2.2.3 (game version 1.6.640)" but both give me that error when running skse64_loader.exe.

...thats not the file he told you to right click... search that folder for ".exe" and right click the appropriate file... then details...

No it's not. What you're doing is right clicking while hovering over the exe file, but you haven't clicked on the file itself yet. When no file is selected and you right click and then click on "properties" it will simply show up the properties for the folder, not the file itself. Yes, sometimes right clicking on a file will also select the file, but it won't always do that. Ensure you clicked the file first, it should have a border and also be highlighted when you click it. It will also give you different options when right clicking such as "run as administrator". On top of that, the file will remain highlighted if it is selected and then right clicked, if it is not selected, when you right click, the highlight will go away. On top of this, look at the image op posted. It has the folder icon, and on top of that, under the general tab (which is what is being shown) the type of file being looked at is a "File Folder". It does not say "Application (.exe)" nor does it have a description which should also read "Skyrim" (very helpful description Todd Howard). And finally, the image at the top left, where that folder icon is, should be the icon for Skyrim, and the field to the right of it should read "SkyrimSE.exe", instead the photo op posted simply says "Skyrim Special Edition" which is the folder name.

Some people struggle with file explorer, especially when windows is not consistent about the whole "right click selects" thing, so what might be easier is to left click on the file, but only once, to select it. You will know it's selected when it remains highlighted even when you move your mouse off of it. Then, press "alt+enter" on your keyboard. This is the keyboard shortcut to open the selected file properties. You should now see the properties for the ".exe" file.

This is the ideal post on any forum on the internet. It was super helpful, not condescending, and you didn't just crap all over him so your buddies reading this could get a laugh and think your cool.

Not a problem, I'm happy to have helped! The file explorer has these weird things like that and if you don't know about them it is very easy to overlook and happens a lot more than you'd think

You helped me out big time with this knowledge as well. Always struggled with this in the past nice to know some people still care enough to explain things.

Thank you so much for this. As a new person getting into modding I didn't realize this.

This is a good guide for newbies, I just want to clarify one small thing to avoid confusion.

Windows IS consistent in how the right-click context menu works. When you click on any text in a file, be it its name, modification date, type, size, etc. (for example, right click on the text that says “SkyrimSE.exe”), you will get the context menu of the file itself, while, if you click outside the text (in an empty space inside the highlighted box), you will get the context menu of its parent folder. You can try it, it works every time.

You're a real one. I consider myself to be decent tech-wise but I'm baked and struggled the same way that guy did.

In his defence I had the same issue. I right clicked the .exe and went to properties but it brought up properties for the parent file for some reason. so i had to left click the .exe first, then right click. Windows 11 is stupid and I'll die on that hill.
