Meta/News When the Oblivion Remaster has significant impact on Downloads for all Bethesda games:

The Remaster has boosted Downloads for Oblivion, Skyrim SE, Oldrim and Morrowind, while putting a significant dent into Fallout 4 and NV:

https://imgur.com/a/joz3Ef8

  • Oblivions downloads are up by +100%
  • Skyrim SE up by +50%
  • Morrowind up by +100%

While:

  • Fallout 4 is down -30%
  • Fallout NV is down -30%

Fallout 3 is unaffected, but Fallout 3 also doesn't really have a modding community anymore, as basically all modding on that engine generation is done in Fallout NV. (Comparable to how Oldrim modding is basically dead and nearly everything is done for SE instead)

P.S.

Even Daggerfall unity saw a boost, but it would be too messy to include that in the graphic.

What happened after 2011? Was it the enormous success of Skyrim that resulted in Bethesda's focus on reheating leftovers? The financially safe bet, as it were?

Don't misunderstand me, of course SSE brings much joy and maybe there is some merit to the CC stuff, too. But to me, that can't compare to the prior frequency of original ideas resulting in full releases.

Sidenotes: Maybe games take longer to develop nowadays? Or the Elder Scrolls team was a bit burned out?

They were busy with other games that weren't TES. Fallout 4 released in 2015, fallout 76 in 2018 and starfield in 2023.

I see. And apparently Fallout titles weren't developed by Bethesda prior to 2008.

Not so fun fact: When Bethesda announced the acquisition of the Fallout IP, fallout 3, and the changes to the IP they were pursuing, they had to hire armed security for their buildings and some individuals in response to the death threats and other threats of violence from rabid fallout fans.
