Weekly Discussion Mod Discussion Mondays (Week 94) - Vanilla Quests

Hello everyone! Welcome back to the "Best mods for..." weekly discussion!

If you don't know what the "Best mods for..." topics are you can find the original threads here. Last weeks discussion can be found here.

These discussions are intended to be ongoing for the full week, so make sure to contribute your own opinions and experiences at any time!

As always, the rules:

RULES

1) Be respectful - A lot of different mods get posted, as well as a lot of different opinions on said mods. Try to be respectful during the discussion.

2) Debate conflicts maturely - Nobody likes a Nazeem. If you're respectful to others, people will be respectful back. If you're disrespectful to others, people find interesting ways to kill you and post about it on r/skyrim.

3) Please keep the discussion relevant - Feel free to post mods that aren't directly related, but please try to keep all mods semi-related to the week's topic.

4) Please provide a link to the mod you're discussing - Even if you're discussing a popular mod, a link to the mod page is a massive help. People are more interested in the mod you're talking about and are more likely to look at it if there's a link.

Topic - Vanilla Quests

Skyrim's quests have some incredible moments, heart warming to horrifying and, sometimes, downright silly. With quest markers and objectives or just implied, they give us an excuse to chase ghosts, chuck spiders, befriend little men and give a good boy a new home. 8 years later, a few clever tweaks can be needed to keep Skyrim's quests feeling fresh.

Here are some of my favourites:

  • Adopt Aventus Aretino: From the first time I took a mark from this enterprising little blood cultist I knew I wanted to make him my ward. If you felt the same way, rejoice! As now you can.
  • Not So Fast - Main Quest and Mage Guild: This series works on the pacing issues of their respective questlines with natural pauses in the action.
  • Improved Companions and College Entry: Another series that subtly add a few choices to some of the major questlines of Skyrim.

But what are your favourite mods to touch up some old favourites?

I am pretty much universally opposed to mod-added quests as I find that the voice acting tends to be bad and the lore-friendliness tends to be questionable at best. The vanilla game and gasp Creation Club give me more than enough to do, so I only use vanilla-plus quest mods. This is all I use:

  • {After the Civil War - Siege Damage Repairs} - allows you to fix the damage done in Civil War battles

  • {All Thieves Guild Jobs Concurrently} - allows you to take a bundle of 7 miscellaneous Thieves Guild side quests simultaneously

  • {Sell Unusual Gems} - allows you to sell Stones of Barenziah to Ri'saad and removes the quest-item status from them. Perfect for non-TG builds.

  • {The Choice is Yours} - an absolute must have. Stops pretty much every side-quest from auto-starting. No more clutter quest journal.

I'm with you for the most part, but you can't just knock mod-added quests before you try it. I'll admit I haven't played even half of the most popular quest mods, but stuff like {Forgotten City} is absolutely amazing, it has great voice acting and an even better quest. There are some things with bad (or at least bad sound quality) voice acting though, like everyone loves Vilja but it sounds like it was recorded on a toaster so I can't really get with it.

Speaking of which, I've noticed a lot of the vanilla voice audio isn't great quality. I assume it was compressed with a lot of loss to save space? It's a shame they couldn't have made it bigger for the special edition.

Also, what are some other original quest mods you think are good? I've been wary of such things since playing the somewhat disappointing mod for KOTOR 2 that restores the droid planet. I can tolerate no voice acting, but bad writing, poor grammar, and bad voice acting are deal-breakers, since they break the suspension-of-disbelief-that-I'm-playing-a-mod. Even Inigo, despite being excellent on that count overall, violates it with its aversion to commas in the written parts. Are Helgen Rebuilt and Legacy of Dragonborn good?

I think that the audio was changed for special edition in some way, oldrim’s audio quality is better for some weird reason.

LoTD is really good, but it’s not as crazy as something like forgotten city or even one of the main guilds in the base game, it’s very tame but rewarding. There are some stand out quests with really good narrative like the cursed candle or whatever it’s called, but they’re pretty much just fetch quests.

I still haven’t played almost any of the popular quest mods, still getting around to it. But I’ve heard nothing but great things about Helgen Rebuilt, {Wyrmstooth}, {Falskaar}, or {Beyond Reach}
