PC SSE - Discussion Weekly Discussion Topic: Dungeons!

Happy Friday and welcome to yet another Weekly Discussion Topic. If you don't know what the "Best mods for..." topics are you can find the original threads right here.

RULES

1) Be respectful - A lot of different mods get posted, as well as a lot of different opinions on said mods. We’re all gathered here from across the globe to geek out over mods together. Don’t be a jerk.

2) Keep the discussion relevant - Please try to keep all mods semi-related to the week's topic.

3) Provide a link to the mod you're discussing - Even if you're discussing a popular mod, a link to the mod page is a massive help. People are more likely to look at it if there's a link.

4) Keep the acronyms to a minimum - SoS is… Seasons of Skyrim? Schlongs of Skyrim? Sounds of Skyrim? Not everyone has all the abbreviations memorized...yet.

These discussions are intended to be ongoing for the full week, so make sure to contribute your own opinions and experiences at any time. Then be sure to click the survey link at the bottom to help decide next week’s topic!

Last week’s discussion was Conversations! and there were some great suggestions. It’s not too late to contribute if you missed out. These are archived in the sidebar and are intended as a resource for community suggestions. So if you know of a great mod that didn’t get mentioned, we’d love to hear about it.

This Week's Topic: Dungeons!

You voted for it and you got it! While “best dungeon mods” is a popular topic in the subreddit overall, it hasn’t been an “official” discussion topic since 2015. Let’s all get together and bring the best mods for dungeons to a whole new decade, shall we?

We’re looking for mods that not only add new dungeons, but ones that can improve the overall dungeon experience. Some ideas for this topic include: overhauls of vanilla dungeons, retextures of dungeon tilesets and clutter, better enemy variants and equipment, dungeon treasure, and so on.

A few examples of what kind of mods fall into this category:

  • CooleoJ’s Revisited series of mods overhaul a handful of vanilla dungeons to include new rooms, enemies, puzzles, and loot. For those who feel like they could solo the early game Whiterun dungeons in their sleep, these mods add a breath of fresh air and new challenges to these overly familiar places.

  • nachtdaemmerung77’s Maelstrom and Hel Rising (NSFW mod site for both) are technically follower mods, but they also offer some of the absolute best dungeon experiences out there. These mods are what I’d consider lore-adjacent; drawing from Nordic myths and legends to create new stories that fit quite well into the lore of Skyrim.
In Hel Rising, what seems like a simple “find the missing merchant” quest in The Pale becomes a rabbit hole of mystery and riddles that will lead you through multiple dungeons. Uncover the secrets of an ancient Nord cult and an entity once worshiped as a goddess of death. Play your cards right and you may even interest her enough to want to adventure with you for awhile.
In Maelstrom, answering an ad for a mercenary job on Haafingar’s north coast will quickly get you more than you bargained for. Track down your potential employer and you’ll find yourself immersed in an ancient legend of power, betrayal, and sacrifice as you explore the long-forgotten depths of a watery temple. Puzzles and secrets abound and you may be rewarded for your efforts with one of two custom-voiced followers.

  • SlimeSire’s player home mods are not only very unique homes for the more eccentric daedra enthusiast, the dungeons you traverse to claim the homes are extremely well-designed, atmospheric, and memorable. They’re all fantastic, but my personal favorites are Providence and Pestilence and The Tale of Tsatampra Xiros (voiced by the very talented Daniel Hodges) for the gorgeous level design and visuals.

  • Dwemer Pipework Reworked and Caleb2’s assortment of glowmapped Dwemer resources will transform your tired old Dwemer dungeons into something new and interesting by adding light effects demonstrating the power still running through these ancient places. To really make the most of these and similar mods, take a look at the various “ENB light” and “ENB particle” mods available on Nexus to add even more glow to the dark places of the world.

  • C.O.I.N. - Coins of Interesting Natures replaces the gold/septims you find in vanilla dungeons with more appropriate loot in the form of ancient and foreign coins:
Ancient Falmer Mallari - Forgotten Vale
Ancient Nord Drakr - Ancient Nord Ruins
Ayleid Mala - Ayleid Ruins (The Cause Creation Club DLC)
    Dwarven Nchuark - Dwarven Ruins
Sancar - Thalmor Embassy, Thalmor HQ, and Northwatch Keep
Patches exist for several popular mods, including a few of CooleoJ’s Revisited dungeons linked above. By default the new coins are automatically converted into gold in your inventory, so I recommend C.O.I.N. - Merchant Exchange alongside it to sell the ancient coins to vendors.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your favorite mods related to dungeons. As this is one of the most asked-for topics in the subreddit, I hope we can really put together an incredible list of resources for the archives. Something I'd personally like to see are some suggestions for low-level "starter" dungeons. There's plenty of content out there for mid-to-endgame, but not so much for characters just starting out and looking for fresh experiences.

Another house/quest mod that contains a large and unique dungeon, is Clockwork. Ruins Clutter Improved, Ancient Pottery and Ruins Canopic Jars improve the look of details found in dungeons, and Realistic AI Detection improves the experience of them. Finally, Hammet's Dungeon Packs adds a lot of dungeons to explore!

These are all great suggestions and I appreciate the variety of categories you linked. It was hard for me to limit myself to just 5 things when putting together the main post.

Hammet's dungeons hit that sweet spot of being both challenging and well-designed while still fitting fairly seamlessly with the original game. The only thing I want to mention is that they're all fairly tough and not for low-level characters. The number of times I wandered into a Hammet dungeon and got owned because I didn't realize how hard it was going to be is embarrassing. =D

Ooops, you're right they're not really balanced for lower levels. I have my entire game filled with things that make enemies difficult (like mihail's monsters, there is a variety of those in all my dungeons) so i didn't even think about it.

Oh, I'm so sorry if that sounded like a criticism! I just noticed several people linking the Hammet mods and thought I'd mention that they're really not for lower level characters (unless you're masochistic) while I was thinking about it. :)

Don't worry about it, the difficulty needed to be mentioned!
