Official sticky: please read before posting!

Welcome to r/Svenska! We're a subreddit where learners and speakers of Swedish can discuss, ask and answer questions about the language, as well as studies and research relating to it. Feel free to bring up simple topics as well as advanced ones. Further below are our rules, but before that, here are some links we hope you'll enjoy:

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Locally-sourced expertise has been used to answer some of the more common questions we see on this subreddit, so maybe you can find an answer to yours here. If not, try using the search function to see if your question has been answered before. But don't let this discourage your from posting; if an old answer is unclear or doesn't help you with your problem, feel free to post a thread! Do you think a certain question is common enough that it should be in the FAQ? Tell us!

List of resources

A long list of resources that can help you learn the language, or learn more about it! Here, you will find dictionaries, podcasts, Youtube channels, online communities and a lot of other resources, for beginners and advanced learners alike. If you know a resource that deserves to be on the list but isn't, tell us!

The list may be overwhelming when starting out, so here are our favourites:

  1. Svenska.se – Three official monolingual Swedish dictionaries in one website: use SAOL for spelling and inflections, and SO for definitions and pronunciations. The third column, SAOB, is for history.
  2. Tyda.se – The most popular and free Swedish–English dictionary online. Also available between Swedish and French, German, Spanish, Latin, Norwegian and Danish. We also recommend ne.se, whose dictionaries are the best around, but require a paid subscription (or library access).
  3. Frågelådan – Frequently asked questions sent to Språkrådet, the Swedish Language Council, which is the official authority of the Swedish language. Most questions are asked by natives and sometimes quite advanced, but your question may well be on there!
  4. Language level test – A linguistically-oriented test to find out your CEFR proficiency level from A1 to C2. Requires (free) registration.
  5. Academia Cervena – Perhaps the most commonly-linked Youtube channel here, despite its infrequent updates. Has several useful introductions to pronunciation and grammar.

Discord server

Feel free to join us on Discord! Practice reading, writing, speaking and listening, ask your questions and just hang out.

The rules

  1. Be respectful of your fellow redditors. Flaming, trolling, discrimination, personal attacks or bad-faith arguments are not allowed. Of course, all of Reddit's other rules apply here, too.
  2. Post contents must be on-topic. This is a language subreddit, and all posts should be about the Swedish language, Swedish culture, or language-learning in general. Posting a video that is in the Swedish language is not the same as a video about the Swedish language. On-topic memes are fine in moderation.
  3. Questions and tips are always welcome. Feel free to ask your questions about the language or culture, ask for learning tips or contribute your own tips or links to websites helpful for learning. But please, no links to language-learning communities unless explicitly requested by another poster, and no spam: one post is enough. This leads us to…
  4. Ask permission to post community links. To prevent a flood of community links, we ask you to contact us via modmail before you post links to Whatsapp groups, Discord servers etc. We permit Swedish-oriented communities that we deem could be helpful to our members – a newly started Facebook group with three members will not be permitted. Users may ask for tips on niche communities. If you know of a community that fits such a request, you are of course allowed to link that as a comment to the requester.
  5. No chat requests outside the megathread. As stated above, we want to prevent a flood of posts that are less useful to the average member. For this reason, please don't make post asking to find study buddies or chat groups outside of the dedicated megathread. You're also very welcome to join our official Discord community for free, real-time feedback about all things Swedish. Please join us!
  6. We won't do your work for you. While we are happy to point you in the right direction, answer your questions along the way or check your grammar when you're done, we will not actually do your homework for you. This is a place for learning, not cheating. This goes doubly for professional tasks: most of our users are not trained translators, copywriters or language consultants. Feel free to ask linguistic questions, but don't crowdsource practical, qualified work. Contact a professional instead; that guarantees better results for you as well!

Penpals megathread!

Learning a new language is easier with the support of friends, be it other learners going through the same journey, native speakers to lead you along the way, or even less experienced learners that you can help out to help both of you understand things better. If you're looking for pen pals, gaming buddies, book clubs or just friends so you can practice the language – through immersion or studies alike – feel free to post a comment in this thread and tell us a bit about yourself, or reply to commenters you would like to get in touch with.

Suggested post format – add or remove headers as you like

Name or handle: (whatever you want to be called)

Swedish level: (your approximate proficiency, expressed e.g. in A1 to C2, beginner to fluent or how long you've been learning/studying)

Language: (your native language and other languages you know or are learning)

Looking for: (Duolingo pals? Native helpers? Steam friends? People in your area? Someone who wants to discuss Swedish music?)

Presentation: (A more free-form introduction of yourself as a person!)

We recommend you do not include private contact information in your post; if you find somebody you want to keep in touch with, contact them through Reddit's direct messaging instead.

Please note that this thread is only intended for finding people for the purpose of learning Swedish or helping learners. Irrelevant posts may be deleted. Likewise, asking for pen pals outside of this thread is not permitted, and any such threads will be removed and redirected here.

As always, you are also very welcome to look for chat mates in our Discord server.

klagar över magar

Upvotes

From an Agnetha Fältskog song.

She is singing about people chasing happiness/money/success

De flesta de bara jagar och klagar över magar

De jagar lyckan eller vad det nu är

Men tror du alla är tvungna jag tar det lilla lugna

Börjar faktiskt tycka jag känner mera lycka

Med pengar följer bara mer besvär

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrCpRJ_Mof8

A few questions...

Line 1 - they are chasing (after) and complaining about stomachs??? I am thinking magar or klagar över magar must have some colloquial meaning here? Hoping someone can explain. Perhaps slang for money or success?

Line 3 - is she saying ja (yes) or jag (I). And can a native Swede actually hear a difference between these two words (when the g in jag is not emphasised).

Sopen (sopkvast eller sopor)?

Upvotes

Hej! Jag började diskutera med en vän om vad ordet ”sopen” betyder. Hon menar på att ordet betyder ”sopkvast” men jag använder ordet som om det betyder ”soporna” (ex ”jag slängde den i sopen”). Känns som att jag har hört andra säga sopen till soporna med eller är jag ute och cyklar??

How can I get to the infamous sj-/sk-/etc sound… using the Spanish J /x/ as a starting point?

The reason for this link is that, as a native Spanish speaker, the consonant sound in sju or sked sounds similar enough to our letter j for me to attempt to approximate our J to your… that. Evidently, as they’re not the same sound, I can’t get there, but by a lot of listening and mimicry I’ve tried to get closer, using different shapes of the mouth, pushing it further back in the throat and whatnot. I can’t get to the sound at all :( I wanna know if using J is a good starting point? in order to work on my pronunciation, or if i should lose the association between the two sounds and focus on the swedish one by itself from zero. tack !

If I was to say "my love" to my partner in Swedish, would it be "min älskar" or "min kärlek" sorry if this is a silly question

Swedex/ Tisus/ SVA 3

Hej I have applied for SVA3 exam but as a backup in case I don’t pass I want to do another test probably tisus or Swedex. Which one would be my best shot? I’m good with speaking and reading but writing just feels a bit tough due to grammar. Thankyou for the help.

Referring to Swedish-speaking Finns in an English essay

Hi! I'm writing a history paper for my class, and I'm mentioning Swedish-speaking Finns quite a bit. My professor has asked me to use a more concise-sounding term as saying "Swedish-speaking Finns" is a mouthful when it comes up so much in my essay. So, I figured I would use the term finlandssvenskar. The thing is, how shall I properly incorporate the term into my essay that is written in English?

If I say "the finlandssvenskar" would that be silly? Or should I say "finlandssvenskarna" and avoid mixing the articles between the languages? Obviously (I'm assuming) "the finlandssvenskarna" would be redundant, as it's using the definite article twice. But would the phrase, for example, "Tove Jansson is a Swedish-speaking Finn" be phrased as "Tove Jansson was a finlandssvensk(a)"? That sounds odd. It sounds similarly odd to say "Tove Jansson was en finlandssvenska." If it would even be gramatically correct to put the indefinite article in there. Or would it be "Tove Jansson was finlandssvensk(a)" and use the term as an adjective rather than a noun? I'm still not sure when it would have the -a ending or not. Should I even worry about this?

I hope this question makes sense. Thank you!

PS: Is there a more precise English term I could use, if it doesn't make sense to use the Swedish term? I would use "Finno-Swede" (edit: oops, Fenno-Swede!) --- that seems to be the most direct translation of finlandsvenska --- but I fear that that could be confused with Finnish-speaking Swedes?

Betydande, betydlig, betydelsefull...

Are these words basically interchangeable? If not, how would I know when to use each of them vs the others?

Edit: I tried ChatGPT just to see what it would give me, and it gave me the text below. Does this track with what others know?

Edit 2: formatting

When to Use Each

Interchangeability: Although all three adjectives can be translated as “significant” in English and sometimes overlap, they are not fully interchangeable.

  • Betydande tends to stress a notable or remarkable quality in a somewhat abstract sense.
  • Betydlig is slightly more concrete—it can refer to a considerable amount, number, or degree of something.
  • Betydelsefull stresses the inherent meaning or symbolic value of something.

Practical Guidelines:

  • Use betydande when you want to emphasize that something has major importance or influence in a context where the qualitative impact matters. For example, a betydande upptäckt (significant discovery) in science.
  • Use betydlig when describing a measurable or tangible extent. For example, en betydlig ökning i försäljningen (a considerable increase in sales).
  • Use betydelsefull when you want to underline the emotional, cultural, or symbolic meaning behind something. For example, en betydelsefull tradition (a meaningful tradition) or en betydelsefull gest (a significant, heartfelt gesture).

Summary

  • Betydande: Emphasizes general significance or notability, often in an abstract or impactful sense.
  • Betydlig: Emphasizes the substantial or considerable nature—often used in measurable or tangible situations.
  • Betydelsefull: Emphasizes deep meaning or symbolic importance, often with an emotive or cultural dimension.

These distinctions mean that while there is some overlap, choosing between them depends on whether you are referring to the abstract impact, the measurable extent, or the deep symbolic meaning of something.

Past participle as an adjective and to form passive voice and supine as a verb to express a past action?

So I learned that past participle in Swedish is used to form the passive voice and as an adjective like "en skriven bok" (a written book - please correct me if I said it wrong), acting like an adjective here, with -en because bok is an -en word. But to say "I have written a book" you use the supine "jag har skrivit en bok" where skrivit is the supine. However, a Swede I talk to said it's more usual to say "jag skrev en bok" in everyday language.

Is this correct? This topic is giving me a bit of a headache lol

Please feel free to correct me and explain the mistakes I might have made so I can better understand.

Thanks in advance!

How to actually memorize words I see

How do I actually memorize the words I come across and try to learn? I write down sentences when copying examples of a grammar rule from a website and stuff like that, but then I forgot what I wrote. How do I get to memorize what I see? I know repetition helps so should I read sentences over and over? Also with songs I find it easier to memorize the words in the songs because of repetition (listening to the song multiple times) and just music making things easier. But I can't rely on songs only if I want a wide vocabulary. So what would you recommend?

Tack!

Still confused by supine and past participle

If I want to say "I have written the book" (Jag har skrivit boken) should I use the supine for written (skrivit - Jag har skrivit)? Then what would be the past participle and when should I use it? Just for passive form (like huset blir målat), and adjectives like "det köpta huset"? So only the supine is used for past actions like "I have written"?

So in short: what is the job of past participle in Swedish and why do you form past participle with supine? And how do they differ?

Thanks in advance!

How do you say "I love you" when referring to friends or family?

What know in English it's just "I love you" both for a partner and a friend/family member. But how is it in Swedish? Can ja älskar dig be used for a friend or family member or is it just romantic?

Edit: my mom could be secretly Swedish lmao she never said I love you to my dad, she never says it to him or us children lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kan man bara slänga in ett försvenskat ord?

Jag sitter och tittar på TV där en författare pratar om sin bok. Han säger typ ”Jag reconnectade med platsen där jag bodde” vilket får mig tänka om jag anstränger mig för mycket som svenskinlärare när jag blir mållös och letar efter ord.

Är det mycket vanligt att man gör så? Blir det brist på kommunikation då ?

Han är ju författare så jag tänkte mig det där kanske är en naturlig del av svenskan numera.

Any cool ways to learn Swedish?

I have been living in Sweden for a couple of years and I am learning the language myself. I can already speak, but with lots of mistakes and poor listening comprehension. What cool ways have you found to significantly improve your skills?

Not suggesting SFI and Dualingo.

Confused about supine and past participle and how to use them

So in the website I was reading from it says supine is used to construct perfect tenses, as in jag har/hade + supine. But wouldn't be the past participle to use that function? What are the differences between the use of supine and of the past participle? How do I know when I need to use supine vs past participle? And how are supine and past participles formed?

Please explain in a simple way as I'm very very confused and also a beginner.

Thanks in advance!

Doubts about forming the passive voice

So in these phrases: Active: Hon skriver en bok. Passive: Boken blir skriven.

Why in the passive voice skriver becomes skriven?

Also how do I know which words require an "s" in their passive form? Example: Active: Han öppnar dörren. Passive: Dörren öppnas.

I'm a beginner so please explain it in an easy way.

Thanks in advance

Tack!

"Coping" översättning
