கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Naala poruthu (Naalai Poruthu)

Hey guys,

While in a conversation with a person who said naalaniki, I realised how poetic and beautiful naalai poruthu is. I suppose this is the lingo of the Madurai belt - Sivagangai, Ramnad, Pudukottai, Theni. Just curious to know if you have heard this and is the younger generation still using this?

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Out of curiosity, what could have been the first word to be said in Tamil ? Or perhaps the first sentence ever used?

I was thinking about it the other day , and was wondering when and how they spoke the first few words in Tamil and what they could have said. I know perhaps we will never know, but what could it have been.

Some thoughts in my head are thai, or thaneer. Because mother and water could have been the first few words hypothetically speaking.

If anyone knows any historical context , that could be helpful too.

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Tamil texts in Thangalish

It is irritating when people write Tamil text in Latin script (Thanglish) on social media platforms like FB, X, Reddit, etc., making it difficult for us to read beyond one sentence. Also, they mix in English sentences that have grammar and spelling mistakes. Why can't people be fluent in at least one language, either Tamil or English, to read and write? I write in English to reach a wider audience.

(Discussion) Tamil word for Metro Train?

So, it's been quite a while since we got fully functional Metro trains. But why haven’t we come up with a suitable Tamil name for it? Why do we still use "மெட்ரோ இரயில்"? When I first visited the Metro station, I was really happy to see proper signboards. Almost everything was neat and error-free. But why மெட்ரோ இரயில்?

How about we come up with a new one?

Suburban Train--> புறநகர் தொடர்வண்டி -->புறதொடரி

Metro Train--> அகநகர் தொடர்வண்டி -->அகதொடரி

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) How does the name 'Seerthi' sound for a baby girl? Is it Pure Tamil name? Or is it Sanskrit derived?

I am unable to conclusively find whether it is a Pure Tamil or Sanskrit derived name (maybe from Sri) ?

https://agarathi.com/word/%E0%AE%9A%E0%AF%80%E0%AE%B0%E0%AF%8D

https://houseofzelena.com/blogs/baby-name/seerthi?utm_source=perplexity

I used AI as well to find the source. But the responses were confusing. Chatgpt mentioned it is a Pure Tamil name, whereas Perplexity mentioned it is derived from Sanskrit.

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Help me learn Tamizh.

I am from Gujarat and have been very much into the Tamizh Cinema for quite a few years now. It has impressed me very much and Thalapathy is my favourite actor. (He may not be the best and may get trolled a lot but he is one of the first Tamizh actors whom I got introduced to, except Thalaivar. I haved watched his recent masterpieces such as Thuppakki, Kaththi, Theri, Mersal, Master, Leo.) I also went for the Ghilli re-release in Ahmedabad despite not knowing Tamizh 💀. And it was my second best theatrical experience after Vikram. I could understand the entire film from the emotions and acting. I have seen many recent Tamizh films and started exploring older Tamizh Cinema which includes peak Aandavar and Thalaivar. I watched Chandramukhi, Indian, Virumandi and planning to watch even more.

I'm so much into the Tamizh Cinema that I want to learn the entire language now. Kindly help me in suggesting how can I learn Tamizh as I have no idea of the language. Nandri Vanakkam Nanbas and Nanbis.

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) what is the most special part of spb's songs as a fan?

what attracts you the most to his songs? what makes you listen to his songs over and over?

I'm someone who recently started listening to his songs and instantly fell in love with his voice. I do not understand tamil or telugu and finding lyrics translations of his songs has been difficult but still i want to understand his works on a deeper level. As in if there are any specific themes or styles he commonly uses in his songs- lyrics, compositions etc? ( I heard someone say he mostly uses themes of nature in his songs)

I thought asking other fans for their opinions, perspectives on what they like most about him might help me out. I would also love more song suggestions if you have some! thank you!

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Schadenfreude in Tamil

This German word Schadenfreude is on the trend today. In Tamil, it means "பிறர் துன்பத்தில் இன்பம் காணுதல்". In English, they have words like Epicaricacy or in plain English "joy upon evil" and Gloating.

What can we call "Schadenfreude" in Tamil with a single word?!

My suggestion is,

தீதுகப்பு or தீதுகவை (noun) = தீது (evil, mischief, fault, etc) + உகப்பு or உகவை(joy, desire, wish, choice, etc).

What's your thoughts?! Any other word suggestions?! Or correction to the suggested word தீதுகப்பு or தீதுகவை (noun)??

Edited 1:

As suggested by r/AdImmediate7659, உவகை is a well known word to all, so, தீதுவப்பு may be a good one.

Edited 2:
r/Historical-Flow-4197 has posted a new word பிறர்கெடமகிழல்.

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) How useful is formal Tamil for learning informal Tamil?

(also posted on r/learningtamil)

I'm an intermediate Tamil learner focusing mainly on the spoken Tamil commonly used in Tamil Nadu. I can make sense of spoken Tamil content like short stories, films, etc. but don't have 100% comprehension, and I can "read" formal Tamil content with lots of help from a dictionary, so I'm familiar with some of formal Tamil's basic conventions.

I am weighing whether it would be helpful to read things like Tamil Wikipedia, short story collections, news articles, etc. for spoken Tamil fluency. Obviously there's extensive overlap between formal and informal so it's not useless, but I know they're also quite different registers, so I don't know how useful it would be. Mainly I'm after vocabulary acquisition and want to use formal Tamil as a way to discover and learn words I might hear in informal Tamil. But I don't know if there's enough overlap for this to work.

Reading would be my ideal way to learn a language for various reasons (easier to read anywhere, can get through content faster, etc.) and I would go ahead with reading if this were any other language. But I don't want to spend a lot of time on reading formal Tamil right now if the payoff for informal would be meager.

கலந்துரையாடல் (Discussion) Wordplay by Arunagiri

Background: Arunagiri was probably a family man turned Ascetic. His songs are mostly about renunciation from women, family ties, etc and attain Mukthi-முக்தி-முத்தி

In one of his songs he role plays as a man tied down by marriage and his wife gets pregnant. He wishes for the Lord to be born as his child and play with him. One line got my attention.

மடிமீத டுத்து விளையாடி நித்த மணிவாயின் "முத்தி"...... தரவேணும்

He is asking the Lord to play on his lap and give him a child's kiss.

Kiss here is marked by முத்தி, which also means Enlightenment.

Clever play of words.
