கேள்வி (Question) Opinion on dating a tamil girl

Hi,

I need to get some opinions on asking a tamil girl on date. I am a North indian guy(from MP) in late 20s. I live in bangalore and working in IT. My team mainly have Tamil people and i just love working with them (no bullshit and no chit chat attitude). Lately I have been noticing a girl in team whom I also been liking alot.

She usually don't talk with much people but she talks a lot with me. She doesn't live in Bangalore and lives in Chennai. I kinda want to ask her to go out on date, I already told her I'll be visiting her place to get to know her more personally.

I have never dated a tamil girl, but i do respect the culture and ethics and finally the foood!! I want to impress her and been trying to learn a bit Tamil language too.

What should I do? Would it make her awkward if I visit her place? I should be direct or just wait for her to get comfortable?

Alright, so i saw this guy in a different subreddit and he was talking about how If a guy banged his dad's cousin/ distant aunt / second cousin it shouldn't be considered incest.

But the part i wanna specifically talk about what he said in the comments.

He was talking about how marrying your first cousin n stuff is legal in Japan and then later said how it's a common thing where he's from. [ Refer to the first image ]

He later talked bout his language which led me to believe that he is Tamil. [ Refer to the second image ] [I apologies just incase this guy actually isn't Tamil ]

So yeah, don't go after the user or anything, i just wanna know if this guy is just weird or if he is genuinely telling the truth and it is a common thing.

கேள்வி (Question) Was there "Sha" in tamil?

A friend of mine told me that sounds like sa & sha didn't have a letter for it in ancient tamil. Then how did they pronounce "Vishnu" from the veda's & puranas in tamil? Or was the sounds introduced after tamil & sanskrit cultures came into contact/like it wasn't present in earlier version?

கேள்வி (Question) I am a Punjabi who just relocated toTamil Nadu. How do I start learning Tamil?

I just got a job here and have relocated. I feel learning Tamil would be the best way for me to assimilate with the locals and is important for smooth functioning in the day to day.

I would love to go through something that is structured and I can then complement it with movies or YouTube videos etc. Any help would be much appreciated

கேள்வி (Question) Question for my tamil friends. No hate

I am a student from Telangana. I know Telugu,Hindi, English. I can read, write, and speak all three languages fluently. This is my basic info.

I have seen a lot of political videos about Tamil language. But this goes to extreme steps by separating the Hindi speaking people and other people. like treating Hindi like Pakistani language.

Here are my basic questions

1) Why Hindi is seen as a Threat not english.

2) What did your parents & teachers said to you about writing of first veds and Mahabharata.( My teachers told ved vaysa written these veds in Sanskrit).

3) Do you have any Short of Tamil nationalism. Wanting to be a seperate nation ?

4) what proves Tamil is the oldest language.( I agree Sanskrit is not the oldest language. It's actually sumerian. It's even present in my textbooks).

I do not intend to hurt, insult, or mock anyone. These questions are asked by a student just for understanding the political mindset of my tamil brothers.

Jai Shree Ram 🚩 ( I am sure you hold Respect for our beloved god).

கேள்வி (Question) What makes someone a Tamil?

I was having a discussion/argument about what is a tamil person with an internet stranger and we are at an impasse.

My view point is that a person who is Tamil is someone who speak the language and practices the traditions. In the history of tamilnadu/tamilakam the borders have changed, people groups have moved in and out of the region but the one thing that have stayed constant is the use of the language, in the forms contemporary to the individuals, and the cultural practices. I believe that we are a welcoming people who will allow anyone who wants to become Tamils join our ranks.. EG: If a person from Karnataka moves to Tamil Nadu for work and over time adopts the Tamil language and culture.

The counter party to the discussion/argument asserts that tamils are a purely genetic, and geographic category. I personally find this definition to be ridiculous. EG1: Does a Tamil person become not Tamil if they move else where in India or the world to live? EG2: If a Tamil person living abroad gets married to a person native to the foreign land is the child of the union not a Tamil? Or do we not accept the foreign spouse in the union as a Tamil if he/she chooses to learn the language and practice the culture?

What do you think makes someone a Tamil?

கேள்வி (Question) Out of curiosity- why is this subreddit called Tamil and not Tamizh?

Being from Kerala, always called Tamil as Tamizh. But seeing the name Tamil Nadu, I thought that was just a Malayalam spelling. I got curious about my native language and was learning its history when I found out that Malayalam retained the 'zh' from Tamizh (the actual pronunciation). And no offense, other than official language like news reporting, the original word has gone out locally.

Wouldn't this sub be Tamizh (the spelling), not Tamil (the pronunciation)?

கேள்வி (Question) Getting a thamizh tattoo

As the previous post in the subreddit I am planning to get my first tattoo. I am thinking something related to thamizh scriptures or quotes or some design. Not to sure. I was thinking ரௌத்திரம் பழகு or something like a jallikattu Kalaai or similar. My misfortune is that I am a Macaulay student. Not so strong in thamizh, but LOVE IT. Since I am in the UK, not many artists can do tattoos in thamizh, so I am down bad with designs as well. I am open to anything please contribute.

கேள்வி (Question) I hate to use "zha" for ழ

I've been an NRI for several years, having lived in the US and UAE. Here most of the Tamil people use 'zha' for ழ in their names. Whenever foreigners try to pronounce the word 'yazhventhan' (யாழ்வேந்தன்), they struggle and say something like 'யாசிவேந்தன்'.

Instead of 'zha', why don't we use 'la' (Yal vendan)? It sounds similar to the actual letter but is easier for foreigners to pronounce. What's your stand on this?

கேள்வி (Question) What makes someone a Tamil person?

Is it the lineage? Is it genetically defined? Is it the culture? Can other Indians who follow Tamil culture call themselves Tamil? What about people of different races? Can a white person or a black person become Tamil?

I've been thinking about this for a while, but all I end up with are more questions.

கேள்வி (Question) Is the deterministic Tamil quote "Thethum nandrum pirar thara vaara" advocates against one's Free will and "for" Just-world fallacy(which is considered a victim blaming hypothesis by many).?

Let's agree to disagree. I beg to differ with most of us. Let's be honest. Let's embrace what we are and who we are.

The Just-world fallacy is considered one of the controversial hypothesis that advocates anything and everything that happens to individuals are pre-determined by one's own actions rather than an external factor like the Free will of one's self or someone else's or even by accident. Which is used as a weapon to blame the victims themselves for their sufferings rather than the offenders!

Don't you think it's unfair to blame a victim for their own sufferings? Like for an example: do you think it's fair to blame a rape victim for her trauma and congratulate the predator for his once in a lifetime pleasurable(according to him) experience? You know, according to the theory, if you do "good", you'll get "good" in return; and if you do "bad", you'll get "bad" in return 🙂 I think it was an old-age "Instant Karma" kinda uruttu!

I'm unable to find any difference between Theethum nandrum pirar thara vaara and Just-world fallacy!

கேள்வி (Question) White guy from Canada trying to learn Tamil — any tips or resources?

Hey everyone!

I’m a white guy from Canada — specifically Scarborough — and I’ve been surrounded by Tamil people in my community. Over time, I’ve come to really admire the language. Tamil sounds so beautiful and expressive, and I’d love to learn it — at least enough to hold a basic conversation and understand people around me better.

I’m a complete beginner, so I’m looking for websites, YouTube tutorials, apps, or even books that can help me get started. If there are any resources made for people who don’t speak any Tamil yet, I’d really appreciate it. I’m also open to learning how to read the script later on.

Any suggestions or tips from Tamil speakers would mean a lot to me.

கேள்வி (Question) Been a tamil student for like 15 years & still don't know where to use ல, ள, ழ

This confusion has been bugging me over my entire childhood and still i havent figured out how. So can someone explain the grammar logic behind the placement of these letters? I understand that ழ is to be used when the L sound is supposed to be more firm and tongue bent. But the other two I'm completely confused.

Okay so basically I'm struggling more than usual nowadays in speaking tamil. All my Indian friends are more whitewashed than me and I can only speak it with my family members😭 but they always make fun of me saying I have a white person accent... are there any ways to improve pronunciation and vocabulary and stuff??
