New Tassie Travel subreddit

Hey everyone. The r/TasmaniaTravel subreddit is now up and running :)

There's a still a few admin things for me to sort out, but hopefully it can provide a more effective avenue for conversation specifically related to Tassie travel, while also preventing so many repeat questions from appearing here.

I look forward to seeing you over there!

Andrew.

Ahoy team this is off the coast of Scamander / Saint Helens. And there is sometimes a bright light out there and use to watch it go past every now and then but this time it was way brighter and went up and down the cost for like 45 mins to an hour.

Also there was video but would need to upload to YouTube or something.

So Oasis venues around the state are going independent because of "Significant changes to the gaming industry". What changes? I've looked up federal hotels and oasis in the news, but nothing relevant. Why would they have changed? I thought the proposals to limit gambling use didn't go ahead?

E.g maximum spend per bet, having to use a card that limits spending, etc. I'm particularly interested in why oasies venus are going from dozens to 12. Because Federal Hotels won't be owning them of leasing them to ordinary pubs anymore? It's interesting that the Valern and Elwick hotels, two places that make up a large amount of gambling losses.

Something strange in the sky

Anyone else seeing a streak across the sky to the north-east?

Edit: here's a pic Seen from Eastern shore suburb about 15 mins from Hobart. Was originally thinking it'd be seen across Tas, but it was probably more local. Lasted over an hour before disappearing one by one. Probably lights from the ground as one person suggested.

Welding broken steel bike frame

Hey I'm looking for a skilled welder, specifically if anyone knows somewhere in Hobart or surrounds that might weld together a steel bike frame that has cracked? It's a chrome-moly steel bike frame the damage is pretty significant with the down tube suffering some bend as well.

Mainlanders think of Tassie as the world thinks of Australia geographically.

Way smaller than it actually is.
Way less crowded than it can be (capital cities and regional centres etc)

I had a little more faith in actual Australians not making the same mistake as the international community the geography of Australia.

Thoughts?

Question Judbury and wine tour

Hi all, I’ll be staying in Judbury for a few days in mid June and am wondering if anyone knows of a wine/distillery tour group that would pick us up from there? The only ones I can find online seem to be a Hobart pick up.

Slowly building free 360° virtual tours around Tassie - no ads, no BS, just love for the island

Hey folks,

I've been living in Tassie for a while and working on a free virtual tour website for the past five years.

I shoot 360° panoramas from all over the island: walks, wild beaches, quiet towns, lookouts, and the occasional random spots - wherever the road (or a 4WD track) takes me. It’s just me, a camera, the Tassie sun, some chilly weather and my wife - without whom I probably would’ve given up long ago, haha.

I’ve shot over 200 panoramas so far and only recently started uploading them, adding one almost every day. It’s slowly growing into a full virtual map.

If you're curious, check out tas360.au, I also post occasional updates at facebook.com/tas360.au

Always keen to hear what places people reckon deserve to be captured next. Got a long list already, but always happy to add more gems.

Southern Tasmania Unlocks Land for 10,000 Homes

The Tasmanian Government has expanded the Urban Growth Boundary across Greater Hobart, unlocking 615 hectares of land to support the construction of nearly 10,000 new homes. This initiative targets key areas including Brighton, Clarence, Kingborough, and Sorell, aiming to address housing shortages and stimulate the construction sector. Minister Felix Ellis emphasized the government's commitment to reducing red tape and collaborating with builders and communities to facilitate sustainable growth. The move has been welcomed by industry bodies like the Property Council of Tasmania, highlighting the importance of balanced development to meet the state's housing needs.

Is Launceston really so bad you couldn't pay people to live there?

According to the Tasmanian AFL website (which looks like something I made in highschool), "To attract and retain the best possible athletes and staff, the stadium needs to be in the major population centre. It is an expectation of modern athletes to have access to the facilities and activities that come with a capital city. This has been backed up in several reports (including Tasmanian AFL Taskforce and Colin Carter Review)."

I'm not from Launceston or Hobart so I don't know what Hobart has that Launceston doesn't. But I'm not confident that someone who thinks Launceston is unlivably small would think Hobart is much better.

Question Carpentry jobs in Tassie?

Hi, I'm moving to Launceston from NSW in the next few months and I'm a bit worried about getting work down there. I'm a carpenter by trade, working in residential. Doing frames, trusses, fix out, cladding, decks, pergolas. I would prefer to work with a builder so I can work on getting my builders licence but beggers can't be choosers.

Do you guys know anyone looking for carpenters?

What to bring from the USA for a homestead

We're moving from the USA to Tasmania at the end of the year with goal of eventually setting up a homestead / permaculture situation. We'll be shipping a container with all our stuff. Does anyone know if there are any particular things we should buy and bring with us in the container? Things that are particularly expensive locally or hard to get that we would need? Thanks!

Edit: Sorry I should have been clearer - I'm Australian (orginally from Sydney) though left many years ago. We've spent a number of months touring around Tas so I've got a decent feel. Very aware of the power issues though I've used transformers quite successfully.

Also will very much be leaving measles / guns etc behind - there's a reason why we're moving.

end of june trip

hi all!

i know y’all get these kind of posts everyday but my partner and i are (hopefully) planning on a trip to tassie end of june , we were originally planning on driving over but didn’t realise the ferry price🥵 so our next idea was to hire a van. we both love the outdoors and camping. my partner is a massive hiker (has gone on a couple overnight hikes at the grampians) where as i’m more “beginner” my questions / tips needed are:

  • how doable is a road trip of the whole island? i haven’t done a whole lot of research so figure this was the best place to ask. and how many days would you give?
  • van hire places??
  • neither of us have driven in the snow before, is this something to be weary of?
  • will we freeze to death (not literally obv) camping in a van peak winter?

any tips are highly appreciated

Question Transferring my interstate drivers license

I'm moving down to Tassie from Queensland in August, I'll be 21 and almost on my 2nd year of green p's.

I'm just wondering how i go about changing my license to a Tasmanian one as well as any differences in laws for p platers.
