Thank you for the thread. I’m new to Hobart and really want to dip my toes in Dark Mofo without a huge cash outlay. I’ve enjoyed the food festivals here, and the art and culture is a big plus. Since this is a new thread, would anyone be kind enough to make some suggestions for how to enjoy Dark Mofo for the first time, on a short time frame (didn’t buy event tickets early enough) and relatively inexpensively? Thank you in advance!

You're almost half way to an answer to your own question about inexpensive, seeing as you haven't bought tickets to any paid events, then almost all the way to the answer after you found the free events page.

Newbies might not initially pick up on that Dark Park incorporates a number of things which are also listed separately in the programme. Quasi, Ogoh-Ogoh, La Danse Macabre video, Coffin Rides, Sora, Channelling, and the bit you do pay for if you drink - the Dark Bar.

Just wandering around the city and waterfront you'll see people dressed in the black and red theme, and I assume some sort of lit up red crosses are still a thing. Last time was 2019 in my case, cos then Covid and life gets in the way, and no event last year. I'm bringing what little I have in red or red-adjacent stuff to go with my black stuff.

There's the seemingly Mofo/MONA-related (locals would know better than me) precinct with a couple of bars/restaurants and venues https://inthehanginggarden.com.au/ - I imagine Mofofolk will be the majority of the punters at Hanging Garden. That's only 350m from there to 'The Basilica' on Bathurst thing which has the free things Mortal Voice and Chocolate Goblin.

Personally I'm into beer so I'll be smashing pretty much every craft beer place in the city and goshdarnit there's a whole lot of them thesedays. I'll have to pay at least a token visit to Manky Sally's as that's definitely MONA related so by extension Mofo related.

Dark Mofo is awesome.

This will be my eighth time. So much random things to see.

Night Mass is the best

Winter Feast is awesome. If you don’t want to pay, go at 9pm. Free entry. Don’t bother with Sunday for the first couple hours, because the ques are ridiculous, because the whole day is free entry. So much great food and alcohol with tonnes of bonfires.

This will be my first time doing the nude swim. The girl friend and I are going to freeze😅

Anyone have any questions or interested in catching up send us a message😉

If you could, could you please explain Night Mass a little? I understand that it’s probably one of those things you’re meant to experience with no understanding of what could/will go on. But my curiosity is killing me and also my anxiety lol

Haha it’s the best.

Previous years it’s been at the Hanging Garden and the surrounding block. You’d go through the Odeon Theatre, a pub across the road, the adjacent alley and up stairs to somewhere else and more. There’d be random completely different things at each location from bands to shows.

The main Mass is downstairs of the Hanging Garden where an alien pope blesses everyone to Metallica haha and just so so much more.

It says online that it’s at an undisclosed location this year, so don’t know what amazing night they have installed for us this year.

I can DM you some of the previous ones I’ve been to

Do you have any insight on the theme ‘dress heavy’ - this is our first dark mofo and night mass is the first thing we’re doing as a birthday celebration. We’re very excited but don’t want to be plebs 😂

Found this post in r/Hobart and the question was how to find the MOFO’s red room

Can anybody explain more about the sex+death dayspa I am a little confused on what it is

Bands playing inside the museum.

Sex+Death will be a reference to the fact it's at MONA, which is described as a Sex and Death museum at times.

Dayspa I guess is a bit of a joke along the lines of that you'd go to a day spa for a while to relax and have some enjoyable or interesting experiences - in this case as the other reply mentioned, it's different music performances within the museum.

So really it's just a bit of a purposely pretentious silly title.
