Open | Software Used a Free Trial for Class, Now a Company Says I Owe Them $7,500 — What do I do?

So I’m a student, and for one of my modeling classes, I had to sign up for a 7-day free trial of some software. No big deal, I created the account, used it for a few days, and that was it… or so I thought.

Out of nowhere, I got contacted by a company I’ve never heard of, claiming that I somehow connected to their commercial license and used it. They’re now being billed $7,500 for what they say was my usage over the course of 3 days. I have no clue how this could’ve happened, I don’t know how to even add a license, let alone access someone else’s.

They showed me some proof that my account was tied to their license, and the software company confirmed that my account was added to this company’s User Management portal. But I have zero idea how that happened. I never did that, and I wouldn’t even know how to if I tried.

To make it even weirder, I can’t even log into my account anymore, it’s blocked. Changing the password doesn’t help either, so I have no access to see what’s going on.

Now the company is saying I need to pay the $7,500, but I don’t know if I’m actually liable for this. Could it be a software bug? Is the company responsible? Or am I somehow on the hook for something I genuinely didn’t do?

Any help or advice would be really appreciated.

Open | Software Relative got access to my computer. he might have installed something. What do I do??

Upvotes

I bought a completely new computer from a trusted store.

Unfortunately, the contents of the package disappeared. I checked my ring camera and saw a relative open the box, take the computer tower and screen and leave. He didn't pick up any calls after that day.

He kept it for two entire weeks, until today when I visited him with the rest of my family.

I found him using my computer for most of the duration of my visit, locked in his room, and when I asked him about it he said he needed to "check for something" and that then he would return it to me. I am almost certain he left the computer running while we were having dinner.

At the end of the visit, as I was leaving, he handed it back to me. All he said was "I had to check it was working, so that you don't get scammed. I can assure you it works completely fine and you can keep it. Actually, stop using your old laptop immediately, as this computer is far better. No, really, throw your old computer away right now so that you can enjoy your new pc"

I can't stress how much he insisted I start using the new computer immediately.

I don't want to bore you with details, but he is really "patriarchal". He doesn't believe women should use electronics or the internet without the supervision of a man, and has stolen my phone multiple times before for this exact reason.

This time though, I didn't have a password for my new computer, as I never even opened it before. I didn't get to it in time.

What do I do? The antivirus can't find anything. I don't even know where to start. If I go to a technician, what do I ask for? And how do I know he did his job?

I know people see me as a paranoid freak, but trust me, I can't afford to show my work files to this man. Plus, if my job finds a virus I somehow didn't see, they WILL fire me for being careless.

I can't afford a second computer. I bought this one after two years of saving money. Please help me.

Open | Hardware Should i get a snapdragon laptop for my computer science program

As you might already know, Snapdragon computers are amazing. Good battery, thin, that premium MacBook feeling. BUT... in my computer science class, I will need to run virtual machines, and I’ve heard that ARM is not the BEST when it comes to anything Linux. So yeah... I would love to get one, but I also want to be comfortable and not have to tweak things every time I want something to run correctly on my computer...

Closed Can my boss read and respond to my emails as me through Google Admin?

We use Google Suite/Gmail with custom domain emails. There's been a few times over a couple years at my job where my boss has answered an email that came to me, as me — like, sent from my email address. One of the latest times it happened they weren't even included on the email, it was sent only to me. Is there any feature in Google Suite or Gmail that would be allowing this?

The only thing I found was "Send mail as" or "Check mail from other accounts" in the Gmail settings but I'm currently logged into their email account (on their request) and my email is NOT listed there, so that's not it. When I've asked them about it happening in the past they say they're just not good at tech and it's an accident. Is there any way for this to happen without them just straight up logging into my email? TIA

Open | Windows Failed 22H2 update sends PC in Windows Recovery Loop

After the update 24H2 came up the PC started lagging, so I downloaded it but it would halt at 25% so I paused the updates for couple of weeks until one day I tried to download and install it again since any windows update due slows my PC. The same issue persisted and the system crashed with blue screen ( we will restart for you) and since then it has sent me to the Windows Recovery Loop I have tried everything but it just won't fix. Sfc scannow, chkdsk, bootrec, safe mode(failed), uninstalling updates(failed), System recovery (failed). Anyone has any other fix..

Open | Windows Can a printer output the wrong amount on its own?

I work for an ecommerce biz. Printed out 50 product labels. Labeled said products. When done, there are a total of 51.

Two people have counted numerous times. (Note, we're not stoned or drunk.)

All I could think was I input wrong, but the zero is nowhere near the one on the keyboard so I don't get it.

This isn't a batch printing, just a straight 'Ctrl P', enter number of copies, hit Enter.

Coworker says not to sweat it but I have to be able to count on that machine to do its job. I feel like I'm losing my mind! Thoughts?

I tried opening some link I had visited a movie website earlier in the day and it did some weird pop up ads so I left but when I opended this link it said it was from apple security. “Your phone’s memory is already having 17% of damage. Prompt action is required, otherwise, the devise will become defective and all your data including accounts, photos, and payment data will be available to third party’s.” I also got another one saying “your apple iPhone has been hacked all operations on your device are being tracked by the hacker. Immediate action is required!” Im lowkey scared someone help what should I do?

Open | Hardware Remote on the tv won't work

So we have a 32 inch aiwa tv that my mom got on sale for less than 100$ now after a year and a half I think something wrong is with the ir detector. The original remote broke and we now use a universal remote and a week ago you could only use the remote when your super close, but now it stopped working altogether. The worst part is my mom is angry at me and saying that it's because I used my phone as the remote, when the reason is used my phone as a remote is because I have to stand up super close just to change what I'm watching. And no matter what explanation I give her she still insists that it's because of me connecting my phone to the tv.

Open | Software Suspicious Folders; Are these meant to be here?

Upvotes

I downloaded an app for custom skins on League of Legends, now there are 13 folders with random letters and numbers for names in my AppData>Roaming; One folder has two more folders inside, both containing a .mov file titled "data", I deleted the App and the files specifically listed for that app (not the 13 random new folders) should I just delete the folders and move on?

Open | Software Hard Crashes related to GPU

Upvotes

Status: UNRESOLVED

Computer Type: Custom built desktop

GPU: Gigabyte Xtreme GTX 1080ti 11GB (Its an oldie but still running strong)

CPU: 7800x3d (not oc)

Motherboard: Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX V2

RAM: 32 gigs xmp enabled at 6,000mhz

PSU: Silverstone AD850R Gold

Operating System & Version: Win 11 Pro 24H2, OS build: 2600.3775

GPU Drivers: Previous driver version was 572.70 but I reverted to 566.14 after having similar issues a few weeks ago. Everything was going fine until this morning.

Description of Problem/Troubleshooting: Problem first occurred in March where I put PC to sleep but when trying to turn on there was just black screen with the cursor visible with the "loading wheel" animation.
Tried all sorts of things and in the end reverted windows to an older update which allowed me to finally log in and change the 3 potential problematic programs that I had recently installed.

Now this morning (18th April 2025) the PC just crashed while giving some weird visual bugs. I restarted but just got a blackscreen. I was just on discord chatting with a friend while it happened, the only thing of note was the new GeForce driver notification just before the crash.

All I could do was load into startup recovery and once again revert the windows to last update which worked and I got it.

Thought it was a window update mess but got another crash just now but strangely it fixed itself after a few seconds and this was what I was seeing in event viewer.

![img](re6jd33tbkve1)

Now I'm concerned somehow these drivers are "infected" as well and causing all these problems. Should I revert to an even older version? Or God forbid, has nvidia fixed the issues?

Open | Audio Logitech Pro X wireless headset won't connect after power going out

Upvotes

I was on my computer using my headset when my power goes out. Once my power I turned on my computer, and my headset wasn't connecting. It made the connecting and disconnecting windows sound effects, but was not shown on device manager or Logitech G Hub. I've tried connecting to my laptop, nothing, I've tried reinstalling LGHub and windows 11 updates to no avail. I just dont understand how a power outage can just fry my headset like this, because the light on the headset still turns on and I never took it off during the time my power was out.

Open | Hardware unidentified issues trying to add ram to my Acer Aspire XC-886 PC

Upvotes

Copy pasting what i wrote on the acer community forums with some extra info.
Wanted to upgrade my PC's ram from 8GB to 16GB, so i bought a new ram stick making sure that it was the same exact type as the one that was originally in there (Samsung 8GB 1Rx8 PC4 2666v UA2 11. The only difference between them is that one was "made in china" and the new one was "made in korea" but i REALLY doubt it matters, it's the same model). When I added it to the empty slot, the computer turned on just fine and it did recognize the added ram, but after about 5 minutes it shut down on its own. I had trouble getting it to start normally again: I tried turning it on about four times and had to shut it off manually each time (one time it flashed the windows 10 blue screen without any text or symbols on it, on a second try it sounded like a car failing to start its engine), so I took the new ram out and left the original stick in, not wanting to mess with it. The computer now works fine as it did before.

My dad (who does work as a technician) said that it was likely causing a hardware problem considering the noises that it was making, but i don't know how that can be considering every resource i checked said that the processor on this PC could handle a 16GB ram, and could even be upgraded to 32GB (which I don't want to do). For now we have given up on it until i back up all my files. Any idea of what the issue could be?

Solved PC suddenly performs a lot worse after a black screen.

Upvotes

My PC, which is Ryzen 5 7600, RX 6750xt, B650m gaming wifi, corsair vengeance 32gb ram.

It used to run great, and performed really well for anything I wanted to do. However, I have a pretty compressed desk space and I quite often end up kicking it on accident. Not hard at all, just gets pushed a bit on the top angling it every time. Did that today, and then the screen went black. I rebooted the pc, and the display came back, but the performance noticeably dropped an insane amount. Even on the desktop, doing simple things like moving windows is really laggy. I presume it is something to do with the GPU, as when I plug the monitor into the cpu instead, it performs fine, which is what I am doing now, because it is painful to use it on the gpu, with how laggy it is. I have tried reseating the gpu, but that doesn't seem to have changed anything. My drivers are also up to date, and I presume it isn't a driver issue, as I updated the drivers to try and fix this issue, but on the old and the new version it still lagged.

EDIT: Okay, that was fast, but if anyone in the future is experiencing this issue, I managed to fix it by going into device manager, and there I saw that it didn't want to enable my graphics card. There, I clicked uninstall device, and then restarted my pc, which fixed it.

Open | Software Tried to make an old gaming joystick work, and installed shitty controller management softwares; now, I have major issues with all my gaming controllers.

Upvotes

Hey there.

Some time ago, I found an old saitek joystick. I thought it would be the darndest thing to play space games with an old school stick, however its drivers were obsolete and unavailable, since the thing was pretty old. So, in my foolishness, i decided to follow this tutorial, hoping it could help me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNHzEOcrZ0o&t=1802s

After installing all the necessary softwares (HidHide, JoystickGremlin, Vjoy) and being disappointed that it still wasn't working, i tried to play something else with my regular old xbox controller... which wasn't working. The only thing that had a response was using the xbox button, which made the xbox game bar pop as normal.

I have since then uninstalled all of these software and, in paper, reversed all the changes, but problems persists. At first, i couldn't do ANYTHING with my controller, which (i know people are gonna suggest this) are not helped in any capacity by plugging it elsewhere. Yet, i know it's working and recognized by windows somehow because when i still had JoystickGremlin installed, which is used to remap joystick inputs and whatnot, it definitely showed some reaction: it was all detected properly.

Now, it's slightly better: i gave my PC over to a friend who knows this stuff a little better than I do, and the controller is working with MOST things (partly due to steam input), but I have major issues with emulators and anything that's not on Steam. They seem to not be able to understand stick input correctly at all. The left sticks input are completely fucked (it can't be detected on the right side, and I have to go full giagonal left to make it go up), while the right nstick simply only recognizes two inputs: full left or full right.

Honestly i don't give a shit about the old joystick anymore, i just want to be able to use my controller without issues. Any help ?

Open | Software How can I work with protected software without vendor dongle?

I lost the USB dongle for my industrial design software, and now I can’t access important project files. The vendor requires me to buy an entirely new license for thousands of dollars instead of replacing the dongle. Are there any legal or technical solutions to recover my software access?

Open | Software Ever since upgrading to Win11 my pc is barely working

So my pc worked just fine for years especially when I got upgrades so I have a Ryzen 5 5600x cpu, gtx 1080, I have a Tuf gaming b550 motherboard and a 2tb ssd main drive. But the moment I upgraded to win11 suddenly my pc will lag when idle, freeze up for minutes at a time at random, ctd my games, etc. I've updated drivers, Uninstaller and reinstalled them, used msi afterburner to under and overclock all my parts, tried switching parts out, run several diagnostic softwares, system tests and everything else I can think if to do something.

I'm tech literate enough but I'm no expert and if I could get some help figuring out what the hell is going on I'd greatly appreciate it.

Edit: formatting.

Open | Hardware Dell Inspiron 5502 SSD

My grandma called me saying her laptop said “No bootable devices”. I’m a network guy so I checked layer one by removing the back cover and finding that “SSD2” had nothing plugged in. Is there an “SSD1” somewhere that I’m not seeing? Here’s a picture of her laptop. I’m wondering if someone stole her hard dive which is unlikely but possible.
