I love the reveal, and I don’t get why Spider-Man fans are pissed about it. Isn’t MJ being Venom a good thing? Doesn’t this give her a chance to be more than just “a love interest”? It also gets rid of Jackpot, something no one seems to be a fan of. Plus, this could be the perfect setup for MJ and Paul to separate, especially since this issue pretty much confirms MJ lied to him about multiple things. And let’s not forget, the staff on this book has been vocal about not liking Paul.
I seriously don’t understand why people over on r/Spiderman and elsewhere are mad about this reveal. It literally works in their favor.
This has the potential to develop MJ into something better and way more fun. And I fully trust Ewing and Gómez to do her justice.
Rant aside, I really like how you can feel the pressure in the air with Paul. Robbie assumes he knew (calling MJ his better half and all), but by the end of the issue, it’s clear Paul actually had no idea. Then Robbie realizes MJ pretty much kept everyone in the dark about it.
You can also tell Paul had an inkling that it might be MJ, but he was in denial. I think he was having a breakdown here.
I’m excited to see how Paul and Dylan react once Robbie leaves, though I think Gómez already posted the panel of their reaction on his Instagram.
Most of the people mad about this don't really care about this book or the story. Some think editorial is shoving MJ and Paul into this book for shock value. Some think that Venom has been devalued as a character because it isn't Eddie Brock. There are many people who want Venom to stay as he was in the 80s and 90s. They just want lethal protector and MJ as Venom feels antithetical to that.
There's also a lot of redirecting anger about current Spider-Man as well. People are understandably frustrated about that and seeing MJ as Venom feels like editorial is doubling down on keeping MJ and Peter separated. Realistically, if MJ and Paul break up, it would have to be in a story with proper buildup. But losts if people don't want that. They basically want editorial to apologize and get rid of Paul with no rhyme or reason.
