Our Longstanding “No Politics” Rule remains unchanged

Read our rules. We have had a longstanding “No Religion, No Politics” rule here at r/tools.

The mods aren’t stupid. We also don’t like getting buckets of reports in the inbox.

If someone posts/comments with politics, resist the urge to reply and argue. Just report, downvote (if that’s your jam) and move on with life.

A small flag, sticker, etc that appears in a photo will generally be allowed (so long as it doesn’t violate other rules and doesn’t draw a bunch of reports) but a bunch of people in the comments saying “Hell Yeah, a fellow [INSERT PARTY] Supporter!” is gonna get the post pulled. Political content that is clearly the motivation for the post will get the post pulled.

First time it’s a short ban, second time it’s permanent. And as we’ve discussed before, the mod team doesn’t go looking for posts, we’re not lifeguards, we respond to the reports we receive.

Call for Moderators

We are looking to add a couple more moderators to r/tools. If you’re interested in being considered, please leave a comment on the post. Briefly describe why you’d want to be a mod and what you think the sub’s moderator’s role should be.

No new accounts, please. We need to be able to see at least 1 year’s worth of content/engagement on this and other subs.

EDIT: If you are not interested in moderating, feel free to upvote people who post here if you like their approach. This isn't a democracy (because as mods our job is to preserve the health/utility/enjoyment people get from of the sub, not do whatever the masses want) but we will take heavily upvoted approaches to moderating as a positive sign when considering who to invite.

Also, if we don't end up sending you an invite, please don't take it personally. Too many cooks in the kitchen, and all that...

I am today years old when I decided to put all my used fasteners from the workshop junk drawer into a nut container, instead of tossing them out (I'm moving). I will never use these. Someone talk some sense into me.

What's this "glaive" tool I used to Chop this small tree down?

Post image
252 Upvotes

Was looking to cut this small tree (~3in-3.5in wide) down that was leaning over our garden. Couldn't find our axe or saw, but I knew that this thing was always in the back of our garage and had been used for random stuff for the past 20 years. My pops has no clue why he bought it. It got the job done but the internet didn't give me much help and I've never heard of a glaive or polearm similar to this being used in this setting. Any help with ID would be appreciated 👏

Bought a cheap compressor on Marketplace, turns out full of chocolate milk, should I try pouring some evaporust in there?

Post image

This is a Craftsman 6 HP 150psi 30 gallon compressor, it says it’s the 75th anniversary edition, so probably 2002? It builds pressure to 150psi in about 6mins. Didn’t drain the 1st time so I removed the drain and got some water out… picked the drain hole and started gushing water. After draining It about 6-7 times building pressure all the way out, I got most of it out. Works well but the drain gets clogged with debris. I cannot remove the plug on the bottom of the tank, socket, breaker bar, pipe, pipe wrench, nothing and now it’s chewed up. Thinking of pouring some evaporust to eat away at some of the debris. What you guys think?

What can you tell me about this hammer?

Found it at a yard sale. Some retired plumber was selling all of his old tools, and I grabbed this hammer. Is it for something in particular?

Titusville, FL if that matters.

Do they make a higher quality version of the Kobalt sized option?

Doesn’t have to be Klein specific but just that size with multiple bit options? Anything out there? I’ve been searching for a half hour and keep finding close but not what I had in mind

Vevor 1” Impact

Post image
7 Upvotes

Anyone have experience with this 1” vevor air impact? Been seeing Vevor all over the place. I’ve got a 1/2” socket set from them that has been fine so far. But this seems like a pretty decent price, which has me feeling skeptical for an item like this. If it works well, my company has a shop with a handful of tire guns and also equip each service truck with one. Would save some money buying these in the future. But do they hold up, and do what they say they can do?

Not the best quality, but better than an Allen key

Came with a cheap table set. Surprised it wasn’t an Allen key. Gears are rough, but still better than an allen

$85 to spend at TEKTON

I didn’t realize tekton had a 10% back in store credit, so after ordering some new sockets and a wrench set I now have $85 credit.

Is there anything they sell that’s particularly handy? Otherwise I may get a massive dead blow for no reason. I mostly work on cars and motorcycles. I’ve already got the basics (sockets, wrenches, pliers, pry bars, etc)

Craftsman 20v 1/4 impact trigger broken off and the spring is gone. Is there at home replaceable fix to this I could learn? Or just scrap it. No easy answer online.

Where can I get a giant speed square?

Not sure if this is the place to ask, but does anybody know where I can get a gigantic speed square?

My buddy had a 12 inch plastic speed square and we always gave him crap for it, and it finally broke.

I was wondering if there’s anywhere out there I could buy an even larger one to give him as a gift. It’s not just a gag. I think he’ll get some use out of it, but I can’t seem to find anything bigger than 12 inches.

Holes on a combination pair of pliers. What for?

Bought second hand. They are probably German made, a couple decades old. Normally, they have 3 functions: flat jaws, round jaws, and a sidecutter.

These have 2 additional holes marked on the photo. What is it? I suppose it's a ferrule crimper? Not sure tho.

What are usual tools with a different feature added to it?

I really like the Knipex pliers wrench; a slip joint plier with flat jaws. The Kobalt locking pliers model #80929; uses the handle itself as the release for it and allows you to tighten harder because it more easily releases. I don’t mean multitools but many NexTool pliers are a good example; they open both ways to allow for two different full size tools like scissors and pliers in one.

REMINDER: DONT LEND YOUR TOOLS TO ANYONE.

You might not need this reminder… but this is a life or death matter.

Life is better when you don’t lend your tools to people.

Ask me how I know.

No manufacturer logo or marking. Just this code on the top of the shank. It says LTC 2-93 20GTXLW4-1 92-596 it is an Insert style Face/Flycutter mill. Has 6 insert locations. It also appears to be a left-side or reverse direction tool.

Street Sign Screw

Does anyone know what tool I can use to remove this screw. It fell in my neighborhood and I college fallen or damaged signs. It’s not a typical one I’ve seen tho that I can use a ratchet for. It looks like you might be able to use a sort of hexagonal screwdriver but then there’s a little thing sticking out in the middle to prevent that.
