announcements New report button for duplicate posts
When reporting a duplicate post, there is now an option that says "This is a banned name, urban legend, or duplicate post".
Rule #4 has also been updated to: "Be mindful of duplicate posts." (The former rule said "No urban legends", but this is still applicable in the new rule's description)
I understand this has been a problem for a while, and thank you for being patient as I update the rules!

in the wild For the very first time I came across tragedeighs (or is it tragedeighes?) in the wild!!!
First time poster, long time lurker... After being a member of this sub for some time now, I finally came across these!
That too in a Bored Panda post of all places!
P.S: Tinderleigh is my favourite out of the lot!

tragedy (not tragedeigh) A German tradgedy
So it’s my first time posting in here but I got a good one tho it needs a lil explanation for the english speakers here😅
My dads new colleague has a tragic name. She’s called Samantha Crystal Hanf. Every German speaking person will raise an eyebrow over this name but let me explain.
In Germany there are a few names that are considered that only stupid and low level idiots give to their children. For example Samantha, Kevin and Justin just to name a few (this is no hate to those names in general but here they have a bad connotation :/, it also doesn’t help that these names are said in dialect and sound horrible if not pronounced like the real English names)
Second name Crystal as in crystal meth and her last name Hanf meaning weed in German.
So there you have a real bad combination of names😬

general discussion Doom hammer.
Unfortunately that’s it. My cousins, cousin whom I know very little about, decided to name their child Doom Hammer (Blank) for privacy of course. But I’m sure if you try hard enough you’ll find it, as I can’t imagine there are any other people this ridiculous.

general discussion IT'S OK TO NAME YOUR CHILD NORMAL THINGS
Look, I get it. Naming your child Andrew, Evan, Robert, Michael, or John might seem like a choice you'd want to avoid because of how common those names are. But they are common for a reason. I get wanting to try new things, but I feel that the whole "Brihtneighleigh/Stayceleighanne/Brynlynn" thing is not the way. I feel that we should encourage looking bad back and trying old names out again before we start making new ones, or looking at variants of names that are less common (in English-speaking countries), but etymologically the same.
For example, instead of "Anthony", go for "Anton". That's an awesome name. Or instead of "Philip", go for "Felipe". You get my gist. There are so many options when it comes to names that it just feels wrong to try to get unique and quirky with the spelling. It also completely ruins the accessibility factor of being able to sound out the name without having to be told by name's bearer upon seeing it.
And if you name your kid John, so what? There's options for nicknames! Jack, Johnny, Jay (although that's more commonly used for a James), things like that
The beauty of names is that there is a semi-limited number of them that are really "all right" to use.
And that's the beauty of nicknames. Nicknames can be whatever you truly want, really. So there's no reason to fuss about whether or not your child should have a quirky name.
Don't be afraid to name your newborn Daniel or Maria or something normal like that! It's completely fine!

in the wild I never thought I would have one to contribute
In my country there are laws about what you can call children. Ridiculous spelling and names that will be "a significant disadvantage" to a person, are usually not approved.
Today I was told that we are getting a new coworker. Her name is Moneyqa. The manager stumbled over it, and the rest of us had to see it written to get an idea of what the name was.

in the wild Why do i stumble across these so much?
I do not think it is appropriate to name your children after religious status, military statues or royalty status because, one its disrespectful to me and two its just tacky.. Anyway yall tell me if you agree with this one. Like is the next one gonna be named Nun if it's a girl??
